Ubuntu :: 11.04 Unity - Manage Workspaces \ Still Miss The Good Visual Feedback And The Single Click Action That The Lower Panel (classic) Desktop Switcher Used?
May 21, 2011
I like 11.04 with Unity however I would like to find a method of managing workspaces with mouse (not keyboard) which gives constant visual feedback and is faster than using the launcher bar, which although not 'slow', takes time to appear and it then takes time to locate the (non movable) desktop switcher item.I happily adopt most of what 11.04 (Unity) offers, however, I really still miss the good visual feedback and the single click action that the lower panel (classic) desktop switcher used. Is there a way of me using some item in unity which is closely similar?
I have a workspace switcher on one of my panels, and it has ten columns by one row. However, when Ubuntu first starts up, it only shows four workspaces. By screwing around with the settings, I eventually get it to show all ten, but it would be nice if I didn't have to do that. What is going on?
I started up my computer, the seccond time since i had installed ubuntu 11.04. My unity desktop was gone, and it was now the old desktop(classic). I tried to change it but it didn't work. Then i as i only saw one option i reinstalled ubuntu then it worked again and have since.
Sometimes during the system startup I get this message:
It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment.

I can change switch from the Unity Desktop to the classic GNOME Desktop, but howto configure to do it automatically over Autologin?
I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 and all was working ok till today. I am not sure if it was because of a new update(manager)or maybe another reason, but i get a purple screen and a unresponsive window from a alarm clock app and thats it. This occures when I login onto Classic Ubuntu and Safe mode, the main Ubuntu (Unity) is working fine.
I did use Ubuntu Classic since install and was running fine. Now the screen is purple and cant even shut of the PC with the powerbutton. I can still get into terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1 and that about it... I had Dock installed, task bar... all is gone, even the background picture changed.
am unable to add new workspaces to the panel and by default it is four only. When installed fedora for the first time I could add up to 36 orkspaces (fedora 10). I have tried deleting adding back the panels but no use
Is it possible to remove the desktop switcher applet from the bottom panel? Or autohide or even delete a panel? That is, is there software I can install to do these things in Gnome 3?
After installing xubuntu 9.10 and attempting to change double mouse click starts to single click, there is no difference.
Example:Applications tab, settings, file manger, Behavior and then select single mouse click instead of double mouse click, renders no change in behavior what-so-ever.
I use the Gnome Classic DE in 11.04. Last night, safe-upgrade made a small number of package upgrades (three or four). When I rebooted my PC, this morning, my workspace switcher (the four tiny squares in the bottom panel on the right side of the screen) are gone. I use them regularly. Also, is there any history to identify what packages were upgraded last night so I can look for bugs?
I try to configure mouse click interval since a single click is recognized as double click by doing it from KDE mouse configuration in system settings; but my attempt doesn't work even (I set the click interval to 2 sec, but doesn't change anything). What is the best way to do this in slackware?
I've been using Natty(unity as desktop) since the beta now and it is really growing on me except for the workspaces. Is there a way to see what workspace I am on? *When typing I usually switch with ctrl-alt-"left/right/up/down" but after some work i don't always know what desktop i am one so switching is usually trial and error jumping from desktop to desktop or pressing super-s to get an overview. Seeing which desktop I'm on (maybe in the unity workspace button) would help with that.
*When just using the mouse I used to click on the workspace launcher and I would be on the desktop of my choice in one click but now I need to click on the switcher, identify where I am and where I need to go and it breaks the flow of fast switching, its no advantage anymore compared to just opening all programs on 1 workspace and using super-w I guess there are upcoming changes on the switcher as unity is still in its infancy so is there a way to put the old switcher in the top panel again?
About a week ago I installed some updates. What they were I don't remember. After I did that my mouse started acting up. Now about half the time when I single click it registers as a double click. Also when I click and drag to select text anywhere it'll randomly do another click screwing up that process.
So far I think the problem is when I press the left mouse button it registers the left click and then when I release, it randomly registers another left click.
The mouse itself works fine if I take it to another PC that's using windows.

I don't want to use more than one workspace. On previous versions of Ubuntu, I was able to reduce the number of workspaces to 1 and and remove the workspace switcher from the panel. I want to do this in Unity and can't find a way to. Right clicking doesn't let me remove from the launcher and I can find no way to reduce the workspaces.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS has no immediately apparent way that I can see for changing the mouse behavior from the default double-click to single-click. There appears to be some type of kludgy, but unsatisfactory fix for this unwanted behavior in the Accessibility-option, under Mouse-Preferences.
when i click my mouse on something, it sometimes registers as two clicks. it doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough to be annoying. for example, when i click a videos video to pause it, it often opens into fullscreen (which you normally click twice to do). also, in the url bar of chromium, i can't select the entire url by clicking. i now need to use ctrl+a. that's also because when i try to select the url, the highlight randomly disappears.
if i have multiple windows open, my click on the first "x" of the top-most window also closes the next window. i'm on linux mint 10. it's not really important, but it drives me crazy sometimes when my mouse doesn't work the way i want it to.

If I normally click the Trash icon either in Kmail or in Evolution more than one mail gets deleted in a sequential order! I have to press the click button extremely light to avoid this problem. I have confirmed this problem is not only with the Email clients but even with most other normal applications too. I have changed my mouse twice but the problem persists. Both were USB mice. Below I have provided log information :
Code: linux-uitj:/home/anisha # dmesg | grep usb [ 0.138267] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs [ 0.138267] usbcore: registered new interface driver hub [ 0.138267] usbcore: registered new device driver usb [ 0.396952] usb usb1: New USB device found, idVendor=1d6b, idProduct=0002 [ 0.396956] usb usb1: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=1 [ 0.396958] usb usb1: Product: EHCI Host Controller [Code]....
For some reason now when I left click slackware sees it sometimes (4 out of 5 times) as a double click. This is very frustrating? Here is a list of ps aux
Code: USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 1 0.1 0.0 824 276 ? Ss 12:39 0:01 init [4]
Today I had this weird new icon appeared on my Cairo dock (The grey rectangular box sitting in the middle).Right click on it, choose whatever action, it just won't disappear
I've just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my netbook. Having had a bit of a play with Unity I found it not to my taste, so I've switched to "Ubuntu Classic" - Gnome without Unity - on the login screen. For a while now I've organised my work using the Workspace Switcher Gnome applet. I use five workspaces, each named to identify the type of stuff that goes on in it.
11.04 comes with Workspace Switcher version 2.32.1 - right clicking it and clicking on Preferences gives a stripped down preferences dialogue, no longer including fields allowing the user to define workspace names. Ubuntu 10.04, for example, uses Workspace Switcher 2.30.2 which did allow for workspace names to be defined via the Workspace Switcher Preferences dialogue. I'd really like to be able to define workspace names and have them show in the Workspace Switcher in the panel.
I installed ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop and everything worked just fine. When I helped a friend to install it on his laptop unity did not work, only ubuntu classic. On the login screen I choose "ubuntu" and when I log in I get "ubuntu classic" I went back to the login screen and chose "ubuntu classic" and it did the same thing so my question is:
where did unity go?
has anyone else had this issue, I have installed the recommended nvidia drivers and I still don't see unity, I don't know what to do next!
