Ubuntu :: 10.04 Lmsensors Broke With Latest Kernel - Can't Boot / Fix It?

Sep 15, 2010

Where's the recovery console in 10.04? Apparently there's no Grub so holding escape to get to a boot menu to boot into a shell isn't an option for me it seems.

I just want a shell so I can remove lm-sensors or whatever package I installed that's made my system unboobatble.

Software :: Can't Boot Fedora 12 With Latest Kernel

Jul 18, 2010

I am running the 64-bit version of Fedora 12 on an MacBookPro5,1 Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 Gigabytes or RAM.

I updated my system to use kernel 2.6.32.16-141.fc12.x86_64. Now when I try to boot the machine to that kernel, I'm left with a blank screen except for a blinking underscore cursor in the upper left corner after going through the load progress bar animation that appears at the bottom of the scene when Fedora is booting up.

I have my system configured to use the nVidia drivers for OpenGL 3D acceleration

I have to boot to previous kernel to have a usable system.

What can I do so that the system will boot up properly with the latest kernel?

Ubuntu Installation :: Latest Upgrade Broke Booting?

Mar 17, 2010

I just did the latest upgrade in 9.10 via the update manager and it required a reboot. When I rebooted Ubuntu failed to load. In recovery mode it fails saying that it can't find my root device and has some suggestions about what might be wrong. I looked at the file it listed in /proc/something and the devices available by uuid in /dev/ and what's listed in /proc/something isn't in dev. I haven't made any changes yet for fear of causing worse damage. The shell it bumps to is ASH and it doesn't look to have much editor support to make changes to the proc file(ECHO > ?). Is there a safer way to get my system back online?

I'm running 9.10 AMD64 on a Dell Inspiron laptop with a dual boot to Windows 7 (For browser testing web apps/sites)

Red Hat / Fedora :: Boot Failure After Latest Kernel Update (12)?

Mar 14, 2010

Dual Boot: Fedora 12 and XP Dell 505I've had trouble with the latest kernel update.I updated a bunch of packages recently (including Xorg and kernel), and noticed a severe flickering after the update on my center monitor (Samsung T260 - the laptop display did not exhibit the flickering behavior). I backed out all the changes and started updating package by package. After I updated the kernel (again) I rebooted and here's where the fun part is -

I no longer get anything, except the cursor. No grub menu, no grub prompt. I rebooted and ran the rescue disk and followed the procedurery and point grub at the right boot partition - see here. However (obviously or I wouldn't be posting) that failed to work. I still get a blinking cursor and dead system on boot up.

CentOS 5 :: Evolution Broke By Latest Yum Update?

Apr 16, 2011

After installing the latest updates (the second round of updates since the upgrade from CentOS 5.5 to 5.6), Evolution mail barely works on my KDE desktop. After I do manage to get it running, then exit the program and log out, bonobo-activation-server and a couple of evolution process invariably continue running, and must be killed manually. The program generally does not start at all using the desktop program icons. If I make sure bonobo and all evolution processes are dead, I can generally get it started using the command line, but it complains with this error message:

Ubuntu / Apple :: Latest Update Broke Graphics Rendering

Dec 1, 2010

I installed a whole mess of updates yesterday, and when I booted into Ubuntu today, my desktop looked off. I could only use the upper 80% of my display, while Docky had decided to completely take over the bottom portion. Killing Docky brought my display back to full size. However, any scrolling or window movement was very jerky. I double checked my appearance preferences, only to find out that I had been 'downgraded' from 'normal' to 'none'. I attempted to go back to my original settings. First, I was told that the Appearance Manager was searching for available drivers. After flashing through all of my open windows, I was told 'Desktop effects could not be enabled'. A bit of searching discovered that people have had problems with compiz in the past. I downloaded compiz-check, and ran it, only to be shown the following:

Quote:

Gathering information about your system...
Distribution: Ubuntu 10.04
Desktop environment: GNOME
Graphics chip: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 2400 XT
Driver in use: fglrx
Rendering method: None
Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system... [SKIP]
Checking for hardware/setup problems... [SKIP]

At least one check had to be skipped: Error: No rendering method in use (AIGLX, Xgl or Nvidia)

So, something in my updates broke my graphics rendering. Unfortunately, I don't know how to force Ubuntu to tell me what was updated yesterday. If I could do so, is there a way to revert to the previous version, so I could run the updates one at a time until I figured out what went wrong?

Ubuntu :: Kernel Update Broke The Nvidia?

Jan 29, 2011

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and ran the normal weekly updates last night. There were kernal updates listed but they have run alright before so I went ahead and let everything update.

On restart my Nvidia drivers would not load, so I restarted in low graphics mode. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver (with the intent of reinstalling them) but decided to restart before I reinstalled the driver (windows habit). upon restart I was told (in a very small box) that Ubuntu was running in low graphics mode.

I clicked ok and it proceeded to load, but it loaded it in regular mode and only the right half of the desktop is visible! It is like it is cut totally in half! And I can't get to the important side with Admin and Preferences. I tried boot options but that just gets me a very small colored box. There are no options when it boots just 3/4 of a box that says it is running in low graphics mode because "unable to load module "fglrx" module does not exist". I can not try and reinstall the Nvidia drivers because I can't see the part of the desktop that has Admin on it. I have used Ubuntu for several years now but have not used the terminal very often.

Ubuntu :: Broke WiFi By Kernel Upgrade / What To Do?

Jan 13, 2010

I'm running Ultimate Edition 2.4 on an Acer Aspire 3500 lappy, yesterday I allowed my system to upgrade the kernel (from 9.10 kernel 2.6.31-17 to 2.6.31-18 generic) as per usual but when it rebooted I had no WiFi. The network manager didn't even have a wireless section, only wired, and I couldn't setup a wireless network either. If I reboot into the earlier 2.6.31-17 kernel everything is OK.
Another problem is that even tho I have no screensaver enabled and no power saving options enabled, (ie screen never disabled) after a short time of no use the screen goes blank. If within a few minutes I touch the pad or hit a key the screen returns but if it's been an hour or so nothing I do will wake it up,even tho there is still disk activity etc, and the only way to recover is with a hard reset, hold power key to reboot.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Upgrade To 2.6.32-23-generic Broke My LVM - RAID And GRUB

Jul 4, 2010

I recently updated the kernel to the newest version(2.6.32-23-generic) using the update manager and now I am unable to boot in to my Lucid installation.

My setup is LVM on top of a RAID 0 array. My computer had been running in this configuration since Lucid was released.

The Error Code I get on Boot is to the effect of: /dev/mapper/ubuntu-os is not available.. and then I get kicked in to Busy Box.

Once in Busy Box if I try to use mdadm to mount the RAID array I get this error:

If I boot in to the live CD I can mount all of the partitions and LVM volumes, so it does not appear to be a failed drive or volume.

I have looked in the mdadm.conf, lvm config and grub config files and searched the "Google" for an answer with no-avail...

Ultimately I would like to find a solution which doesn't involve a re-installation.

Debian :: Squeeze Kernel Upgrade Broke Suspend To Ram

Dec 12, 2014

Yesterday, I ran a security update that upgraded my Squeeze kernel from 2.6.32-48squeeze8 to 2.6.32-48squeeze9.

Ever since then, my suspend to ram (STR) function is broken.

The machine will suspend normally, but will not resume. When I try to awaken the machine, I can hear the fan in the tower start up (the subject machine is a desktop computer, please see below for specifics), but the machine seems to be otherwise dead (e.g. the monitor stays blank, pressing the "caps lock" key on my keyboard does not activate said keyboard's "caps lock" led, Ctrl-Alt-F[x] has no effect, etc). My only recourse at that point is a hardware reset (ouch!).

I tried running Code: Select allpm-suspend from a terminal, with no joy. Same result running Code: Select allecho -n "mem" > /sys/power/state from a terminal.

I checked the /var/log/pm-suspend.log file and noticed that each Code: Select all...performing suspend line used to (before said kernel upgrade) be directly followed by a Code: Select all...Awake. line, but, now, all said Code: Select all...performing suspend lines are followed by an Code: Select allInitial commandline parameters... line.

Before this, STR has worked well ever since I first loaded Squeeze on this machine back in 2012.

Code: Select allSqueeze 6.0.10; 2.6.32-5-amd64

Fedora Hardware :: Intel Gigabit Ethernet(e1000e) Broke On 2.6.35 Kernel / Resolve This?

Nov 8, 2010

Just a heads up to others. There is a kernel regression in the 2.6.35 kernel with regard to, some but not all Intel Gigabit ethernet adapters using the e1000e driver. After an otherwise successful upgrade from fedora 13 to 14, no ethernet connection could be made while using the upgraded 2.6.35 kernel that comes with fedora 14. The 2.6.34 fedora 13 kernels work fine and were fortunately still available after the upgrade.

I have personally seen the identical malfunction on all 2.6.35 kernels I've tried with both Arch and Aptosid and have seen similar reported problems on the Gentoo forum. In each case, going back to a 2.6.34 or upgrading to a 2.6.36 kernel solved the problem so this is almost certainly a kernel issue. My onboard Intel Gigabit ethernet adapter is:

$ lspci -vv | grep Ethernet
00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82566DC Gigabit Network Connection (rev 02)

I believe the intel ICH8 chipset motherboards are the ones primarily effected.
