Ubuntu Installation :: Latest Upgrade Broke Booting?
Mar 17, 2010
I just did the latest upgrade in 9.10 via the update manager and it required a reboot. When I rebooted Ubuntu failed to load. In recovery mode it fails saying that it can't find my root device and has some suggestions about what might be wrong. I looked at the file it listed in /proc/something and the devices available by uuid in /dev/ and what's listed in /proc/something isn't in dev. I haven't made any changes yet for fear of causing worse damage. The shell it bumps to is ASH and it doesn't look to have much editor support to make changes to the proc file(ECHO > ?). Is there a safer way to get my system back online?
I'm running 9.10 AMD64 on a Dell Inspiron laptop with a dual boot to Windows 7 (For browser testing web apps/sites)

I upgraded yesterday ubuntu 9.10 to 2.6.31-19 kernel. After reboot, I get stack to GRUB black screen. No possibilities.
My set-up is triple boot 9.04, 9.10 and winxp. The MBR is handled by win boot.ini with no problems. Each ubuntu partition has a grub installed in it.
9.04 is on sda5 with grub installed on it ext3
9.10 is on sda9 with grub2 installed on it ext4
I am able to boot into sda9, via grub of sda5 obviously passing the correct kernel parameters and UUID.

I upgraded to 9.1 and now my web browsers are not working properly--FireFox would not connect to certain sites, others worked fine. I installed Chrome and it worked for a short period--now none of my browsers work at all and package install manager does not work. Overall performance is much slower than before upgrade--boot time is about 4 times slower. I'd like to fix this build because I had it tweaked just the way I liked it before the upgrade--it was working great and now I'm sorry I upgraded there any hope or should I just start with a fresh install of 9.1 or even the previous version

Since my distribution upgrade to 10.04 my VirtualBox guest of XP SP3 will not boot, it bluescreens and reboots. I can boot the guest in last known good config and in safe mode but I have no CDROM. I attempted a tools install over the lan but that resulted in the same blue screen. Tried installing the virtualbox-3.2 beta package and guest tools and had the same results..

I had a working workstation with Karmic. Then I decided to upgrade to Lucid. Bad move, it turns out.First the upgrade crashed. Just stopped doing something for hours on end, and I eventually had to reboot. After that, I had to apply lots of apt-get and dpkg love to get the machine to book. Now, I *think* I have a Lucid system, at last. Only that it doesn't work where the Karmic system used to...Our setup uses kerberos and autofs. To begin with, the upgrade lost my /etc/krb5.keytab (making it impossible to log in), but that can be easily replaced. Now, I can log in, but my home directory doesn't get mounted. In /var/log/auth.log, I get this:
Code:
Jun 23 11:13:58 pc13477 gdm-session-worker[1801]: pam_krb5(gdm:auth): pam_sm_authenticate: entry (0x0)

So after I upgraded to 10.10 some of my compiz plugins stopped working. Atlantis and anaglyph give me an error like this when I enable them in CCSM (I ran compiz from a terminal to see the output):
Code:
compiz (atlantis) - Error: InitObject failed
compiz (core) - Error: Couldn't activate plugin 'atlantis'

I ran a system upgrade today and it froze at "unpacking replacement libpango1-common". It just wouldn't go on. The upgrade kept on showing "unpacking replacement ..", the process used zero CPU time, so I killed it, removed the lock and after Synaptic asked me to, I ran sudo dpkg --configure -a. Now I can't install anything. Everytime I try to, I get an error telling me I should run "sudo apt-get -f install", however, whenever I do that, another endless installation of libpango1.0-common starts. I tried various things like installing that package manually, removing it and so on, but nothing helped. Any advice on how to get my package installation system working again is warmly welcome.

Upon upgrading from Karmic to Lucid, Everything comes up, seemingly fine. Once logged in to the OS, my three monitors show the desktop wallpaper as well as all the icons on the desktop. A few programs that I have set to autostart do so.
However for some reason, I can only access one of the three monitors. (And not the one with the gnome-panel.) As soon as I drag my mouse from my third monitor onto the one next to it, I loose complete control of it, and it starts dancing all over the place. If I try to drag a window from one screen to the next (using Alt-Left CLick + drag and not moving the mouse onto the other monitor), the the app goes from one side of the working monitor to the other side (like it's wrapping around). Though I can see it on the other monitor for a little bit until I get it far enough for it to wrap.
Here is my xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Files"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled"

I had the Adobe flash plugin working under 09.10 in Firefox; now after the upgrade to 10.04, it doesn't work. When I go to a web page with flash video, I get the message "Some plugins are not installed" and video will not display. I click on the button to install the plugins and select Adobe Flash. I get the message "Package is already installed." I go back to the web page and the same thing happens again. In Ubuntu Software Center I see that package restricted-extras is installed.
I tried going through Tools / Add-ons in Firefox, but the list of add-ons wouldn't load at all that way.I also tried going to Adobe's web site, but for versions of Ubuntu 09 and later it offers an "APT" file instead of a .deb. Firefox asks what application to use to open an "APT" file and I don't know what to tell it... I'd be fine downloading a .deb or using apt-get or Ubuntu Software Center though.

I beleive I had version 9.x installed. I upgraded once and everything was fine. I went the upgrade manager again and it found some more upgrades. The upgrade messed with grub. It then told me there were no new upgrades. Then I rebooted and it says
Try (hd0,0): NTFS5
Then the screen clears and there is some text I can't read and then it says command not found. Then it reboots.
Is there a way to fix this?
If not is there a way to recover the files from the disk image file.

i wanted to upgrade my ubuntu system to meerkat beta via update manager like i upgraded it the last 5+ times.
a bug showed up that i can recall from updating files previously: some software installtions via update manager triggered the programm nicotine+ (i think is was something like man-lib or man-db that, when called by the installtion programm, would trigger nicotine too). since i can close that nicotine+-window and the installation process isnt bothered any further i didnt mind.
now with this upgrade, i had to close nicotine+ around 5 times since it got triggered together with some of the files that got updated/installed in this upgrade.
and then what happened: GError something about an "unrecognized image file", it concerned a py file that was named "nicotine"...
so i waited for 10 mins and figured out that the update process had stopped. i couldnt resist and logged out, wanting to delete nicotine from my system and to reinitialize the upgrade. well, nothing works since then, grub only lets me choose different kernels which didnt help much as there was no way to startx.
my question is:
how can i reset this upgrade mess or bring this pending upgrade to an end? can i do an upgrade via network, based on the emergency shell that comes up in some kernel-recoverymodes? or should i burn a livecd, boot it and then do what? repair? try another upgrade? delete nicotine?
having 'consumed' ubuntu for years now i still wouldnt know what else to do then posting here.

I upgraded my ubuntu installation from 10.04 to 10.10, now surround sound (5.1) does not work in xbmc, or in another player such as vlc. Only the front two speakers work. I noticed pulseaudio and alsa are installed. I thought i removed pulseaudio once before but cant really remember. In the sound configuration preferences thing (prefs >> sound), i have hdmi output selected (hdmi goes from the HTPC to the amplifier). It only plays audio in 2.0 instead of 5.1. I tried selecting the analog 5.1 sound option, but none of the test sounds work. However i noticed vlc still played movies with audio, but only stero no 5.1.
Previous to the upgrade, i had 5.1 working fine in xbmc, never bothered to check vlc since it was all good. Also, when i go into alsamixer, it does not show any rear speakers, it just shows a front speaker and a bunch of other stuff, like headphones. I'm not sure what other output you guys need, but let me know and i'll get it. Here is the alsa-info.sh output for my HTPC: [Code]..... Another note, after i reinstalled pulseaudio the first time, vlc fails to display a 5.1 movie and still plays tero output.

Where's the recovery console in 10.04? Apparently there's no Grub so holding escape to get to a boot menu to boot into a shell isn't an option for me it seems.
I just want a shell so I can remove lm-sensors or whatever package I installed that's made my system unboobatble.

Ever since I upgraded, the touchscreen on my Fujitsu Lifebook P1610 no longer works. On Karmic, it worked out of the box without installing any extra packages.
I see xserver-xorg-input-fpit in Synaptic Package Manager but it conflicts with netbook remix packages for some reason so I haven't tried installing it.
I didn't see anything in dmesg about the touchscreen but there are Xorg errors:
Code:
...
(II) config/udev: Adding input device Serial Wacom Tablet (/dev/ttyS0)
(**) Serial Wacom Tablet: Applying InputClass "Wacom serial class"
(II) LoadModule: "wacom"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/wacom_drv.so
(II) Module wacom: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
[Code]....
I'm not sure if it's supposed to be recognized as a wacom tablet or what, and I'm also not sure how it used to be configured when it worked in Karmic.

I recently updated the kernel to the newest version(2.6.32-23-generic) using the update manager and now I am unable to boot in to my Lucid installation.
My setup is LVM on top of a RAID 0 array. My computer had been running in this configuration since Lucid was released.
The Error Code I get on Boot is to the effect of: /dev/mapper/ubuntu-os is not available.. and then I get kicked in to Busy Box.
Once in Busy Box if I try to use mdadm to mount the RAID array I get this error:
If I boot in to the live CD I can mount all of the partitions and LVM volumes, so it does not appear to be a failed drive or volume.
I have looked in the mdadm.conf, lvm config and grub config files and searched the "Google" for an answer with no-avail...
Ultimately I would like to find a solution which doesn't involve a re-installation.

After installing the latest updates (the second round of updates since the upgrade from CentOS 5.5 to 5.6), Evolution mail barely works on my KDE desktop. After I do manage to get it running, then exit the program and log out, bonobo-activation-server and a couple of evolution process invariably continue running, and must be killed manually. The program generally does not start at all using the desktop program icons. If I make sure bonobo and all evolution processes are dead, I can generally get it started using the command line, but it complains with this error message:

I installed a whole mess of updates yesterday, and when I booted into Ubuntu today, my desktop looked off. I could only use the upper 80% of my display, while Docky had decided to completely take over the bottom portion. Killing Docky brought my display back to full size. However, any scrolling or window movement was very jerky. I double checked my appearance preferences, only to find out that I had been 'downgraded' from 'normal' to 'none'. I attempted to go back to my original settings. First, I was told that the Appearance Manager was searching for available drivers. After flashing through all of my open windows, I was told 'Desktop effects could not be enabled'. A bit of searching discovered that people have had problems with compiz in the past. I downloaded compiz-check, and ran it, only to be shown the following:
Quote:
Gathering information about your system...
Distribution: Ubuntu 10.04
Desktop environment: GNOME
Graphics chip: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 2400 XT
Driver in use: fglrx
Rendering method: None
Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system... [SKIP]
Checking for hardware/setup problems... [SKIP]
At least one check had to be skipped: Error: No rendering method in use (AIGLX, Xgl or Nvidia)
So, something in my updates broke my graphics rendering. Unfortunately, I don't know how to force Ubuntu to tell me what was updated yesterday. If I could do so, is there a way to revert to the previous version, so I could run the updates one at a time until I figured out what went wrong?

I have two computers running Ubuntu Gnome with Firefox. Upgrades yesterday (18 February 2010) at about 1430 MDT hours (UTC 2130 hours) broke Firefox on both machines. Firefox is present in the menu, and in /usr/bin/firefox, but it will not launch, not even from the command line. I have tried "sudo apt-get remove firefox" followed by "sudo apt-get install firefox" but the problem persists. When attempting to launch firefox, it does give me a tiny brown spot at the upper-left side of the screen. This can be expanded by dragging so that it is a full screen, labeled "Firefox" but there is no content in the screen...only blank space.

I have installed ubuntu a week back and since then i am Loving it. I have a couple of quries.
1) Since the launch of ubuntu 10.10 is very near i suppose it is almost safe to upgrade to ubuntu 10.10. I had done the following to upgrade. update-manager -d and upgraded to 10.10. The system has failed to boot after that what should i do to safely upgrade the software. Is it required to uninstall all the drivers prior to the upgrading of the os?
2) How can we take backup of the data we have in ubuntu? for example pictures and music folders etc?
Now i have safe and superbly running 10.04 version. is it recommanded to upgrade to 10.10 now?

OKI am loading 9.10 (K or U, makes no difference). This installs 2-6-31.14. Eventually I am unable to dissuade APT from upgrading to Grub 1.97 beta4. One of two things can happen.
1) I am upgraded to a later kernel at the same time (currently 2-6-31.1. This singularly fails to work, in that I end up with no working kernel at all and I can only run memtest (or Windows 7, which is about as much use): good for the soul no doubt, but frustrating. "Solution": tar up the whole of /boot beforehand and then reinstate it afterwards. I am back to square 1, but at least a working square 1.
2) I persuade APT not to upgrade the kernel.I then get 14 (and 14 recovery) in my grub.cfg, but boot fails dramatically, and it becomes apparent that it has forgotten about /dev/sda, my hard disk.Further investigation shows that I have a new initrd.img in /boot, which doesn't work properly; reinstate the backup version, and all is well. What is going on? Is it just me? How come there aren't crowds of protesting peasants with pitchforks outside Canonical Towers?

What's happening: When booting, after the summary screen, the monitor turns blank. And not just any kind of blank, the back light shuts off but the monitor doesn't go into hibernate mode. I've tried several threads and followed many steps to reinstall grub. By basic grub-install, to purging grub entirely and reinstalling it in a chrooted environment. I have four SATA drives and I've read this is a problem. However, when using the BIOS to choose which SATA drive to boot from, they all yield the same problem, except one, which complains about putchars not being found or something. But searching for that problem just brings me back to the same steps I've already followed to reinstall grub.
Windows XP and Windows 7x64 are both installed as well, and I know grub seems them just fine.
I don't know what else I can do. bootinfo.sh: Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th,

I have upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. I have been using wmii as window manager under ubuntu for years. After the upgrade it's entirely broken.
The metakey is not working anymore, I cannot do anything. The key itself works fine in other environments so is's no hardware issue. After several attempts I completely uninstalled wmii, removed all relevant folders in home and /etc/X11 and reinstalled wmii from the ubuntu repositories.
This fresh install does not work. It starts a strange looking wmii without any key responding to my actions. I copied my old wmiirc to ~/.wmii. When i log in I see my individualized wmii but the metakey is not working and i cannot do anything, like opening a shell.
Edit: A change to "MODKEY=ALT" in wmiirc does not change anything.

My girlfriend upgraded from Karmic 9.10 to Lucid 10.04 when the upgrade became available. She did it from Update Manager as opposed to a clean install.
I have no idea what she did, or how the process works (I installed from a Live CD on my own computer) and ever since she did it, she hasn't been able to boot into Windows XP from GRUB2.
GRUB2 loads up fine, with Ubuntu and Windows listed. It'll boot into Ubuntu with no problems. Selecting Windows will just re-load GRUB2.
I've tried re-installing GRUB2 but that hasn't worked. My lack of imagination means I have no idea what to type in to Google, or the forum search.

Just upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. upgraded from update manager. System would not boot. Booted live cd and used the 9.10 menu.lst. Now boots but takes a long time. I don't know much about the kernel. I assume they are listed in the /boot directory and are called by menu.lst (dual boot w/ XP) (btw: I am ready to get rid of XP once I get this fixed). 9.10 appears to use 2.6.31-20-generic, therefore, I assume 10.04 uses 2.6.32-25-generic.
