Every time Ubuntu (10.04) starts, it uses a screen resolution of 1024x768. I change this successfully through Preferences to 1280x1024, but it is never remembered at the next boot. How do I ensure that it is. (I've read that an etc/X11/xorg.conf file may be used for this, but I don't have one and am unsure what I need to put into one)

I am able to change the resolution to 1280x1024 but have to do it by the nVidia configuration tool. The tool then allows me to 'Save to X Configuration'which it appears to have done successfully.See the sections from my 'etcx11xorg.conf' file. This is the state of the file after a reboot by the way.how I can get my desired resolution to persist after I reboot?

This is a new 9.10 installation. Screen resolution by default is 800x600. I've installed the 1.85 nvidia driver, which correctly identifies my monitor as a Samsung 931b (or whatever). Nvidia's gui suggests a 1280x1024, which is just what I want. When I try to save the changes to xorg.conf, I get a variety of errors, including (but not limited to) "...error parsing xorg.conf..". I've chmod 'ed the X11 directory, and the xorg.conf* files in it to 777, I end up with 1280x1024 until a reboot, after which I get 800x600 again (arrgg!).
Judging from the number of people posting here and in other places, this is common. Seems there would be a solution that works. Any suggestions?

Every time I reboot, my screen resolution goes back to 800x600. Is there a way to permanently set it to what I want?
I'm running OpenSuSE 11.2 using KDE.
I am installing 11.2 on an older machine, Athlon 2800+, GeForce 6800, 1 GB RAM. Install goes fine until try to reboot to the OS and just get massive garbage on the screen. Can't see anything just lines crossing the screen, it seems almost like the resolution is way off but don't know how to change that since I can't see anything. I tried two different install disks to make sure not the problem and got the same thing with both. I tried installing both KDE and GNOME on separate occasions and still same problem. I have used the same install disk to put this on an even older machine and that went fine. I do have windows 7 installed on another partition. I'm fairly new to linux but I'm learning.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just install a GT240 video card on my desktop. The monitor that I've been using is a 50PH9UK plasma TV. The TV is connected to the desktop through VGA output. It appears that Fedora sets the screen size at 1360x860 by default. However, I prefer to set the screen size at 1020x768. The problem is that everytime I reboot the desktop, Fedora automatically resizes the screen to the default resolution (1360x860). I tried to look for the xcon.fig file in /etc/X11/ but it's not there. It appears that the xcon.fig is missing. Do you know how I can correct the automatic screen reset issue? By the way, I'm using the Fedora 14 KDE version.

When I change the resolution, my display responds appropriately but upon logging out or rebooting, these settings are lost. Am I missing something completely obvious here?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've read some people having the same problem, but I can't manage to fix it. I got a 1440x900 screen. Every time I reboot my system starts up with 1400x1050 , I have to go to System settings to fix it, options don't get saved as one would expect.
Well, I think my problem is cause of nvidia drivers, so I go to nvidia settings to get this fixed. But, these settings are all fine, it says 1440x900. When I try pressing Save to X (to make sure it gets saved), i get a failed to parse message (Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'!). I've got driver version 256.53
Oh well, screw this, I'll do it manually, so I go to the xorg.conf file. But over here everything says 1440x900. How come my resolution keeps changing each time I reboot?

I use a few different hard drives that I plug into one PC instead of partitioning, since it causes problems. I plugged in my Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit and it booted up in 1024x768 instead of 1280x1024 which is the default resolution for this monitor.Why would it change when it's been 1280 x 1024 everytime but this time? When I check the display settings it doesn't even have 1280x1024 anymore?

After some seconds I get a pop-up with the message: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. After shutdown the video resolution goes back to 1024x768 but I want 1280x800 instead. I have a Dell IN191ON lcd widescreen monitor and geforce fx 5200 video card. I currently have the proprietary drivers for nvidia installed for my gtx 460, nvidia drivers are ver 270.41.06. Ever since I reformatted my computer and got the new nvidia drivers, every time I reboot my resolution goes to something horrible(1024x76 on a monitor capable of 1920x1080. While I can simply change it every boot, it gets quite tedious so I have a script to run on boot:

To set my monitor to its proper resolution, the issue is I still have to reset gnome panels etc every time after the resolution has changed the config.

I installed Nvidia 195 version from their site and installed as per their instruction. Now, on reboot the resolution gets "800*600" while it should be "1366*768". What should I do?

I'm running a 64-bit PC and I don't wanna waste another CD or use a USB to install, because I actually progress further in my efforts whenever I use Wubi.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 32bit installed on my desktop. My video card is an nVidia 7800 GT. My Monitor is a Sceptre X24WG. I am able to use the NVIDIA X Server Settings utility to change my resolution to 1920x1080 as well as 1920x1200,and 3d opengl accelerated games work. When i reboot, the x server comes up with 1280x1024 as the resolution. I want it to remember the resolution i selected instead of defaulting to a different resolution.
I was running Kubuntu 8.10 previously and had some difficulty setting up the graphics initially, but i don't recall what steps i had taken to get it to work. When i recently reformatted to install Ubuntu 10.04, it wouldn't go directly to 10.04. The screen would go to a garbled display and would load the install window, so i installed 9.04 and then upgraded to 9.10 and then 10.04, without trouble.
I'm using the nVidia hardware driver version 195.36.15, which in the hardware drivers utility is listed as the current and recommended version. It originally wouldn't install until after i had rebooted into the 2.6.31-21 kernel. I have tried the option to save to x configuration file. Before I upgrade to 10.4 It would be nice to find the best solution to this problem. I use a KVM switch that dont pass the EDID info from the screen to the OS. To solve this, that is, to get the correct screen resolution, i need to pass monitor and screen info to the OS at every startup. One way is to ad a script to /etc/gdm/init/default, or in KDE /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

i have just put a Geforce 7300 GT graphic card into my machine the problem is the max resolution I can get is 1024x768 at 60 hz the screen is a benq fp71g+. also the screen goes blank when i click on the display icon in system settings. i know that the screen can be run at 1280x1024 so I don?t know where the problem is.
View 3 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
I have about 50% of my music collection in wma format from my old Windoze days. I don't want to spend the time ( it is about 1800 songs) to re rip the tunes but I want uniform format. I tried using Sound Converter 1.4.4 but I lost all the meta-data.

Both servers have ftp access, I am assuming theres an ftp command I use on the destination server to connect to the source server and retrieve the files? All the files reside in the one dir and need to be copied to the same dir on the destination server.

Using usb-creator, by the way. Are the config files for Karmic and Maverick significantly different that this will cause any major problems? [Separately, I think this will have implications for my existing Karmic install, because I'm planning to clone my Karmic /home partition to a fresh Maverick install.

I am using scp and want to retain permissions, links, and also ownerships of the copied directory structure. I am using scp -pr but the ownerships are all chaning to the user running scp, in my case its root. I have checked the user/groups. They are same on both the sides (lotus,bin,root). And yes I cannot use rsync as the remote m/c does not have this.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got an older RHEL 5.5 server that we're using for our company email server. We're going to retire this server and I've created a new Debian Linux server as it's replacement. Now I'm trying to rsync all the users /home/ directories to the new server however when I tested this, I noticed a problem. In the old source server where I'm running the actual rsync command from, everyone's home directory is owned by their unique UID and a generic GID (100 = users). So when I execute this command on the old RHEL 5.5 server:

Why are all the users home directories being owned by root:root on the target server? It's not owned by root:root on RHEL 5.5 and the only thing I can think of is my rsync command is wrong. According to the man page, I can see that using the -a switch should preserve all file ownership and much more. It's not doing this on the target Debian server. If it tries to copy over /home/bob and it's owned by bob:users, if Debian didn't know or have a UID for Bob, wouldn't it just assign a UID from RHEL 5.5 to the Debian server? So like /hone/bob would be owned by 1009:users?

I've tried running the Fedora disc and choosing to fill empty space with Fedora, but I get an error informing me that I don't have enough space. Presumably, this is because I have a full disk partition.
