Nov 20, 2010Every time I reboot, my screen resolution goes back to 800x600. Is there a way to permanently set it to what I want?
I'm running OpenSuSE 11.2 using KDE.

Dec 15, 2010I've read some people having the same problem, but I can't manage to fix it. I got a 1440x900 screen. Every time I reboot my system starts up with 1400x1050 , I have to go to System settings to fix it, options don't get saved as one would expect.
Well, I think my problem is cause of nvidia drivers, so I go to nvidia settings to get this fixed. But, these settings are all fine, it says 1440x900. When I try pressing Save to X (to make sure it gets saved), i get a failed to parse message (Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'!). I've got driver version 256.53
Oh well, screw this, I'll do it manually, so I go to the xorg.conf file. But over here everything says 1440x900. How come my resolution keeps changing each time I reboot?
Fedora :: Resets The Screen Resolution At Reboot?
Nov 5, 2010I just install a GT240 video card on my desktop. The monitor that I've been using is a 50PH9UK plasma TV. The TV is connected to the desktop through VGA output. It appears that Fedora sets the screen size at 1360x860 by default. However, I prefer to set the screen size at 1020x768. The problem is that everytime I reboot the desktop, Fedora automatically resizes the screen to the default resolution (1360x860). I tried to look for the xcon.fig file in /etc/X11/ but it's not there. It appears that the xcon.fig is missing. Do you know how I can correct the automatic screen reset issue? By the way, I'm using the Fedora 14 KDE version.

May 4, 2011I currently have the proprietary drivers for nvidia installed for my gtx 460, nvidia drivers are ver 270.41.06. Ever since I reformatted my computer and got the new nvidia drivers, every time I reboot my resolution goes to something horrible(1024x76 on a monitor capable of 1920x1080. While I can simply change it every boot, it gets quite tedious so I have a script to run on boot:

To set my monitor to its proper resolution, the issue is I still have to reset gnome panels etc every time after the resolution has changed the config.

I have also tried changing the default resolution in the server settings manager and saving the xorg.conf file, but nothing seems to work. Is there any way to change this/has anybody else had the issue? I'm considering going back to an older version of the drivers if that would solve it,

Jun 7, 2010I have Ubuntu 10.04 32bit installed on my desktop. My video card is an nVidia 7800 GT. My Monitor is a Sceptre X24WG. I am able to use the NVIDIA X Server Settings utility to change my resolution to 1920x1080 as well as 1920x1200,and 3d opengl accelerated games work. When i reboot, the x server comes up with 1280x1024 as the resolution. I want it to remember the resolution i selected instead of defaulting to a different resolution.
I was running Kubuntu 8.10 previously and had some difficulty setting up the graphics initially, but i don't recall what steps i had taken to get it to work. When i recently reformatted to install Ubuntu 10.04, it wouldn't go directly to 10.04. The screen would go to a garbled display and would load the install window, so i installed 9.04 and then upgraded to 9.10 and then 10.04, without trouble.
I'm using the nVidia hardware driver version 195.36.15, which in the hardware drivers utility is listed as the current and recommended version. It originally wouldn't install until after i had rebooted into the 2.6.31-21 kernel. I have tried the option to save to x configuration file. When i save to x configuration file, the xorg.conf in /etc/X11/ looks like this:

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 - Screen Resolution Way Off On Reboot
Jan 12, 2010I am installing 11.2 on an older machine, Athlon 2800+, GeForce 6800, 1 GB RAM. Install goes fine until try to reboot to the OS and just get massive garbage on the screen. Can't see anything just lines crossing the screen, it seems almost like the resolution is way off but don't know how to change that since I can't see anything. I tried two different install disks to make sure not the problem and got the same thing with both. I tried installing both KDE and GNOME on separate occasions and still same problem. I have used the same install disk to put this on an even older machine and that went fine. I do have windows 7 installed on another partition. I'm fairly new to linux but I'm learning.

Jul 15, 2011I have a Geforce GTX 460 GPU and I recently switched from Ubuntu to Suse 11 and I have installed the latest Nvidia drivers (the same as I had on Ubuntu) In Ubuntu I had configured the xserver to display my desktop on my LCD monitor and my LED TV as clones and everything worked fine When I change the settings in Suse everything works fine until I restart the Xserver. All my settings disappear and everything is back to the standard settings again. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I have root privileges or not, and I have tried saving to etc/X11/xorg.conf., etc/X11/xorg.conf.install, etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup but each time I reboot everything is back to the default settings again. In Ubuntu I just saved the new settings to etc/X11/xorg.conf. and restarted the Xserver and all was fine.

Nov 22, 2010Every time Ubuntu (10.04) starts, it uses a screen resolution of 1024x768. I change this successfully through Preferences to 1280x1024, but it is never remembered at the next boot. How do I ensure that it is. (I've read that an etc/X11/xorg.conf file may be used for this, but I don't have one and am unsure what I need to put into one)

Apr 21, 2010My screen resolution keeps reverting back to the default resolution 800x600. I'm using ubuntu 10.04, but had the same problem on 9.10 on my Acer Revo r3600 ION. I am able to change the resolution to 1280x1024 but have to do it by the nVidia configuration tool. The tool then allows me to 'Save to X Configuration'which it appears to have done successfully.See the sections from my 'etcx11xorg.conf' file. This is the state of the file after a reboot by the way.how I can get my desired resolution to persist after I reboot?

Ubuntu :: Nvidia Screen Resolution Changes Won't Survive Reboot
May 19, 2010This is a new 9.10 installation. Screen resolution by default is 800x600. I've installed the 1.85 nvidia driver, which correctly identifies my monitor as a Samsung 931b (or whatever). Nvidia's gui suggests a 1280x1024, which is just what I want. When I try to save the changes to xorg.conf, I get a variety of errors, including (but not limited to) "...error parsing xorg.conf..". I've chmod 'ed the X11 directory, and the xorg.conf* files in it to 777, I end up with 1280x1024 until a reboot, after which I get 800x600 again (arrgg!).
Judging from the number of people posting here and in other places, this is common. Seems there would be a solution that works. Any suggestions?

Fedora Hardware :: Resolution Resets On Bootup - NVidia?
Feb 21, 2010When I reboot my machine, the login screen looks fine, but then when it actually goes into Gnome, the resolution is always reset to a 4:3 resolution that looks horrible on my new 24" 16:9 monitor. When I launch the nVidia X Server Settings application, I can change it back to the monitor's native resolution of 1920x1080 without issue. When I click "Save to X Configuration File" I get an error message stating, "Unable to remove old X config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'."
I'm not sure if this is causing the problem or not. I'm running F12. The graphics card is an nVidia GeForce G100, which connects to a no-name 24" LCD monitor that I just picked up. The monitor has VGA and DVI inputs. I'm running an HDMI cable from the nVidia card, into an HDMI-->DVI adapter, and then into the DVI port on the monitor. I used it for 2 days connecting DVI-only from the nVidia and didn't have this problem.

Aug 27, 2011I recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

To check if there was a problem with the disk I had burnt, I installed an an older version of ubuntu (8.something) which had previously worked and the same thing happened: installation goes fine but then when I reset it goes to the black screen with white writing and does nothing. I then tried to install 10.04 again through usb with the same results. Do I need to change a BIOS setting?

Jan 4, 2011Running new installation of 11.3 with KDE Desktop. I have sorted out text appearance and size thanks to pwabrahams in another thread but I have a big problem with screen size/resolution.
In previous installation of 11.1 on the same machine I was able to change the resolution of the graphics in order to fit the windows on the screen more comfortably. I used to use something like 1240 x 1048 but in the System Settings > Computer Administration > Display the resolution is set at 832 x 624 and no higher resolutions are offered.
I cannot find out the details of the embedded graphics controller (10 year old Dell PE6300 server) but the system information report it as ATI Mach64 GI with swrast (No 3D acceleration) version 7.8.2. I have spent several hours reading the many pages on graphics in this forum and have concluded that I should probably be using a legacy driver but have no idea how to change the driver. Of course if it were possible to increase the resolution to 1240 X 1048 without recourse to changing driver that might do it if I knew what setting to tweak.

Feb 6, 2011I have a fresh install of openSuse 11.3 installed. But after the install the auto reboot nothing happens screen turns off, I restart comp grub came up.

I select default the little gecko loading screen comes up then after 15sec screen goes black screen actually goes into idle mode, button pressing mouse moving nothing effects it. I reboot again select failsafe, text screen comes up going through list everything green, then screen turns black doesn't go into standby just black screen. I reboot try default with nomodeset loading runs same as failsafe except when comes to x-server screen goes black.
I have 2 displays a 18" Dell digital lcd Monitor, and my 26" TFT TV, They are both connected to a Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS, TV with HDMI and Monitor with DVI-I. I have a second 18" Dell LCD Monitor, which I had connected with D-Sub but I couldn't get all 3 working so disconnected second monitor, as i wanted tv over monitor. I had ubuntu 10.10 running before the opensuse 11.3 install it worked fine but i wanted to try suse.
I thought it might have been that I was picking KDE desktop then adding Gnome later in installation, so tried reinstalling default install same problem, tried gnome alone same issue, tried gnome and KDE and same issue. so i put original idea back on KDE and gnome later in install. and im sticking with this until I fix as its the one I want. But if I really have to I will switch back to ubuntu. I have no Linux experience.
OpenSUSE Install :: Reboot Freezes PC At BIOS Screen?
Sep 1, 2011I have a problem where my PC will stop at the BIOS logo screen after a reboot. The keyboard and mouse don't get power ie no lights. I can power off / on and it will boot normally. The problem started after a fresh install and after installing the updates. ie before updates I could reboot and it was ok. I moved from Slackware and have Win7 and they don't have this problem. Also Ubuntu and Arch rebooted normally when I tried them. I have Opensuse 11.4 x64 on it's own HDD (Samsung F3) The system board is an Asus P8P67 Deluxe (Sandy Bridge) and the HDD is on a SATA3 port. Could it have something to do with the EFI BIOS? Would it be worth trying a newer kernel? it may better support my hardware. I'm hesitant as I don't want to break Lirc as it took awhile to get it working properly on the stock kernel.
Also where can I add '/etc/init.d/lirc restart' so I don't have to run it manually every time time I launch XBMC. I couldn't find 'rc.local'

Mar 6, 2010I have chosen to use automatic login. But every now and then I am asked for username and password when the computer boots. When I do get automatically login the screen resolution is changed to 800 x 600 instead of 1280 x 1024. How do I get those two (resolution and log in) settings sticky?

Nov 10, 2010I just installed Suse 11.3 64bit on a new build. My video card is a nvidia gt240. I am using the default drivers. My monitor is a NEC 17" LCD.
When I boot up the screen resolution defaults to 1280x1024. I can go to applications>configure desktop>display and set it to 1024x768, which is my resolution of choice, and it works until I reboot or log out and log back in, then it resets to 1280x1024.
I would like to make 1024x768 the default so I don't have to keep changing it. Is there a way to do this? The output of xrandr looks like this:

Jul 17, 2010Suffering from the expected error in detecting my video properly when installed 11.3.Have intel 915G onboard video. Up until 11.1 Opensuse struggled with loading this correctly. in 11.1 & 11.2 all was well. A couple of minor tweaks in sax2 and it worked perfectly. Now hat sax2 has gone I'm not sure how to make these minor tweaks.
My problem is I have been forced to a screen resolution of 1024X768 VGA Following the readme file adding nomodeset at boot fixes the problem but of course forces me back to an old video driver with pretty poor performance. Is there any way I can change the screen resolution and set the correct monitor - any GUI replacement for sax2? Krandrtray will only let me set a max res of 1024x768. I need to set res to 1280x1024

Whatever resolution I choose, 1600x1200 is preferred, it is reset to a default of 1024x768 when I log out. I use the "Configure Desktop" option to set the resolution. I can find no other method to do so. The graphics adapter is an ATI hd3200. I have installed the fglrx driver. I cannot fine the "Control Center" for the driver. How do I make the selected resolution permanent?
