Ubuntu Multimedia :: WMA To MP3 Retaining Meta Data

May 23, 2010

I have about 50% of my music collection in wma format from my old Windoze days. I don't want to spend the time ( it is about 1800 songs) to re rip the tunes but I want uniform format. I tried using Sound Converter 1.4.4 but I lost all the meta-data.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't See Files Musicbrainz Or EasyTag - Can't Edit Meta Data?

Dec 19, 2010

I am having some problems editing the meta data tags of some music files. The problem is that i am unable to get some files to show up in either EasyTag or Musicbrainz. Problem is when i go to 'add folder/file' i can't see the songs while browsing.

From what i have observed it seems that the songs for which this is an issue are those which i have converted using sound converter. Here it seems that it is the same files in both programmes so i am thinking that there must be something i can do to the file to have it be recognised.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading LiveUSB While Retaining Persistence

I presently have a Karmc LiveUSB with a casper-rw partition, but am thinking of changing the LiveUSB image to Maverick, while still using the existing casper-rw partition and its data (mostly settings for Ubuntu itself, haven't installed any programmes). Using usb-creator, by the way. Are the config files for Karmic and Maverick significantly different that this will cause any major problems? [Separately, I think this will have implications for my existing Karmic install, because I'm planning to clone my Karmic /home partition to a fresh Maverick install.

I am using scp and want to retain permissions, links, and also ownerships of the copied directory structure. I am using scp -pr but the ownerships are all chaning to the user running scp, in my case its root. I have checked the user/groups. They are same on both the sides (lotus, bin, root). And yes I cannot use rsync as the remote m/c does not have this.

Software :: RHEL 5.5 - Rsync Not Retaining Permissions

Jan 28, 2011

I've got an older RHEL 5.5 server that we're using for our company email server. We're going to retire this server and I've created a new Debian Linux server as it's replacement. Now I'm trying to rsync all the users /home/ directories to the new server however when I tested this, I noticed a problem. In the old source server where I'm running the actual rsync command from, everyone's home directory is owned by their unique UID and a generic GID (100 = users). So when I execute this command on the old RHEL 5.5 server:

Code:
rsync -e ssh -avz /home/* root@192.168.0.101:/home

Why are all the users home directories being owned by root:root on the target server? It's not owned by root:root on RHEL 5.5 and the only thing I can think of is my rsync command is wrong. According to the man page, I can see that using the -a switch should preserve all file ownership and much more. It's not doing this on the target Debian server. If it tries to copy over /home/bob and it's owned by bob:users, if Debian didn't know or have a UID for Bob, wouldn't it just assign a UID from RHEL 5.5 to the Debian server? So like /hone/bob would be owned by 1009:users?

I have ubuntu 8.04 installed on a full disk partition. I've just bought a linux magazine, which came with a CD containing Fedora 12. I want to dual boot or fully install while retaining my music, if at all possible.

I've tried running the Fedora disc and choosing to fill empty space with Fedora, but I get an error informing me that I don't have enough space. Presumably, this is because I have a full disk partition.

Debian :: Complete Removal Of Meta-packages Possible?

May 7, 2010

I'm wondering if complete removal of meta-packages, that being the package itself AND all of its dependencies, is possible in one command of aptitude and/or apt-get. For instance, if I have the whole kde installed, and wish to remove that whole load and replace it with the smaller kdebase, can I do this in two commands (IE, "aptitude remove kde", and then followed by "aptitude install kdebase"). The preceding commands wouldn't work, because just removing the initial meta-package would not remove its dependent packages. BUT, I'm wondering if there is a way to remove a meta-package AND its dependent packages all in one command (rather than having to go through individually removing each one).

Software :: Meta Tracker Never Finishes Indexing (resource Hog)?

Jan 31, 2011

I came out with this issue as I saw that my CPU was most of the time between 70 and 80 percent of usage, all by some process called tracker-extract. Maybe when tracker is committing its initial index this is admissible, but this situation repeats every time I boot my notebook and it lasts at least 3 or 4 hours, or until I tell tracker to stop indexing. I hard-reseted tracker to see if there was any corrupt indexes but with no luck, behavior was the same. BTW, this issue wasn't present with ubuntu 10.04

Slackware :: Dhclient Does Not Strip Or Escape Shell Meta-characters

Apr 6, 2011

dhclient does not strip or escape shell meta-characters

Summary: dhclient doesn't strip or escape certain shell meta-characters in dhcpd responses, allowing a rogue server or party with with escalated privileges on the server to cause remote code execution on the client.

CVE:

ISC dhclient did not strip or escape certain shell meta-characters in responses from the dhcp server (like hostname) before passing the responses on to dhclient-script. Depending on the script and OS, this can result in execution of exploit code on the client.

CVSS Score:

For more information on CVSS scores, visit [url]

Workarounds:

On SUSE systems, it is possible to disable hostname update by setting DHCLIENT_SET_HOSTNAME="no" in /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp.

Other systems may add following line to dhclient-script at the beginning of the set_hostname() function:

In environments where filters/acls can be put into place to limit clients to accessing only legitimate dhcp servers, this will protect clients from rogue dhcp servers deliberately trying to exploit this bug.

However, this will not protect from compromised servers.

Active exploits:

Solution:

Upgrade to 3.1-ESV-R1, 4.1-ESV-R2 or 4.2.1-P1. [url]

No patch is available for 4.0.x as it is EOL. Anyone running 4.1.x should upgrade to 4.1-ESV-R2.
