I upgraded to 11.04 on April 29, and since then my boot time has gone from about 30 seconds to 1'30''. I have tried to disable the splash screen to see what happens, but I just don't have so much background in booting processes.

I know this isnt normal for everyone but im getting a 29 to 30 second bootup on 10.04 from grub to login screen.. i installed boot up manager and disabled some of the things listed on a few recommendation pages on google where would i begin to figure this out? before i upgraded i was booting up at like 10 seconds tops..

Sample: "* wil be removed in a future UDEV version..." On another box, I get some "/etc/*/ipv6" should have a .conf file. Should I worry / fix up something before next upgrade?

After it boots up, I don't see any window titles/scrollbars/borders and on clicking the icon for "Show desktop" on the bottom left, I see the following error message:
"Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager."
After googling a bit, I realized that gnome-wm is not starting automatically and so I have to manually start each time to see the windows working properly. Can somebody tell me if there is a way to make sure that gnome-wm starts automatically? I know I can put it in my .bashrc but I want to do it the correct way if possible. If not, I will have to go with that workaround.

When booting Fedora 11, my system hangs for a very long time on starting udev. Sometimes I get an I/O error. However, my hardware is fine. I do eventually get in to the system.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was upgrading our lab's dhcp server to Lucid and it totally died. I have it running on a Debian recovery cd right now. I ran into a bug in gtk which I seem to have fixed, but now I have more serious errors. If I boot without a CD, I get dumped into a busybox shell after the machine fails to boot. From the live CD, I tried dist-upgrading again and it dies trying to build and install rsyslog with a broken pipe error. I am at a loss as to what to do from here short of reinstalling (which is the last option as this server has a lot of custom configs on it)

I have 2 HDDs on my computer on one I have Ubuntu and on the other I have Windows XP Home Edition, but after I have done the upgrade on the Ubuntu, windows XP won't boot... even if I disconnect the HDD (power and data) where Ubuntu is installed... it gives me some GRUB ERROR (I didn't try to boot on windows with both HDDs connected as I only have 2 power cables and I need to use my DVD recorder on Windows)
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been a long time Windows user, but I've started a small firm and because of lack of funds, I've decided to install Ubuntu on my company's PCs.I have 8 PCs in total - 6 of them with Intel CPUs, and the last two with AMD CPUs. I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers.The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI wanted to use Ubuntu on one of my old laptops (a great, speedy modern OS on a modest hardware PC). Unfortunately this PC can not at the time read all CD-ROM's (can't figure out why it does read some) and I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 - the only CD it did read at the time.
I've used it for two years but I never got my wireless card to work (OK, most of the time it was collecting dust) A couple of days ago I finally realized how to use ndiswrapper (lol...) and I was able to get a working Wi-Fi connection on this laptop. I then proceeded to upgrade it over the internet, to Ubuntu 8.04, then 8.10, then 9.04 and, last night, to 9.10.It has worked through each and every of these updates, but after 9.10 the PC won't even boot (after "GRUB loading...).
I just upgraded from ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. Previously I had windows 7 and ubuntu working side by side. However, now when I try to boot into windows, it says GEOM ERROR.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.
For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24
It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on Windows 7 system using Ubuntu disk partion option. Unbuntu works great but I can no longer access W7. Windows Loader Boot Option is in normal position as last selection of Grub menu but arrow keys do work. Acts as if keyboard is locked. System defaults to Ubuntu 9.10. I have a dual boot (2 hard drive) system, and upgraded to 10.4. Booting into XP results in a flashing cursor that doesn't do anything. I know that GRUB screwed everything up, but I need to know what to do--and assume I don't know what I'm doing--to restore my dual boot ability.

i was in ubuntu 10.04 and I thought geting the lastest version is the smart thing to do right? so i went to the update manager and upgraded it to 10.10. but now when i restart the computer all I get is " a black screen with white text that says "Gnu Grub Version 1.98+20100804-5ubuntu3Minimal bash - like editing is supported for the first blah blah, Tab lists possible command completions. View 9 Replies View RelatedI was using Maverick, I performed upgrade to Natty today morning and rebooted and it was working fine. Then I turned off my PC and left home.
Now in the evening when I'm trying to boot nothing happens, just black screen. Nothing happens after that.
Though I can boot by selecting "Previous Version" but can't boot normally. Though I was surprised that even after selecting "previous version" I was booted in to Natty(I guess so, as the UI is Unity not GNOME).
But can't boot using the Kernel that's listed first in my Menu.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had to shutdown the computer while upgrading from Lucid to Maverick as it froze(bug in X11) and then when I start the computer I get kernel panic messages. I used a LiveCD to backup my files and I was wondering if there is a way to log in or reupgrade the Ubuntu in some way from the liveCD.
I don't want to do a fresh install as there are a dozen things I had installed and configured in my system the last 1-2 years.
I had ubuntu 10.04 dual boot with win xp and I recently decided to upgrade windows to win 7. Once I did that I could no longer see the grub therefore I couldn't manage to boot into ubuntu. I don't know what to do, the installation is there because I never touched that partition

I have a Core 2 Duo iMac that I had set up for triple boot using Fedora Core (probably FC8 )and GRUB, Windows XP Pro, and Mac OS X v10.5. Some time ago, I had to blow out and reinstall my Windows installation because it had developed errors, but this also blew out my GRUB, leaving the Fedora install non-bootable. Since I never really used FC on this machine much, I didn't worry.
Lately, I've acquired an hp Mini 110, on which I'm running Linux Mint 8 (Helena), and I'd like to upgrade my FC partition on the iMac to Karmic, but when I run the installer, it won't let me use all of the existing Linux partition, instead wanting to resize it to accommodate both FC and Ubuntu.
How do I make the installer simply replace FC with Karmic, using the entire existing partition? I'm sure earlier versions of Linux that I've used had a simple "erase all Linux partitions and install" option, and the "Manual" option doesn't appear to read the existing partition information (I was too afraid to go any further).
I ended up quitting the installer, which put me into the Live CD environment, where I used the File Browser to "Format..." the Linux partition, but when I went back to the installer, I ran into the same problem, and it didn't seem to matter if I unmounted the existing partitions or not.
I don't use Windows that often but thought since I have a copy of Win7 I might upgrade from the XP I'm currently using. I'm anticipating several issues, first Grub, can I get it going again after the Win7 upgrade without messing with my current Ubuntu install? the next issue is Win7 will want to make a "boot" partition, does this create any problem with partition names for Ubuntu? can this be solved by making the windows "primary" partition and using an extended partition inside that? is there anything I'm missing?

It shows up on the grub boot list but when I select it, all I get is a black screen. It worked perfectly just minutes before the upgrade, but now I cannot use windows, which I need really badly at this point.
