Ubuntu :: Shutdown While Upgrading Distro - Can't Boot ?

Jun 9, 2011

I had to shutdown the computer while upgrading from Lucid to Maverick as it froze(bug in X11) and then when I start the computer I get kernel panic messages. I used a LiveCD to backup my files and I was wondering if there is a way to log in or reupgrade the Ubuntu in some way from the liveCD.

I don't want to do a fresh install as there are a dozen things I had installed and configured in my system the last 1-2 years.

Ubuntu Installation :: Shutdown Prompt In Every Gnome Distro

Sep 3, 2010

Every single Gnome based distro I have tried on a desktop machine has immediately popped up with the Log Out, Shut Down etc prompt as soon as the desktop loads. I doesn't happen with any KDE based distro!

I have tried resetting the CMOS/BIOS etc and it's not the Power Pack, tried two!

The machine is a Fujitsu Siemens Desktop with 3GB RAM, decent graphics etc...

I've tried KDE distros and don't like them as much and really want to get back to a Gnome environment.

Ubuntu :: Upgrading - Changing Distro W/software RAID?

Apr 27, 2010

Building an Ubuntu file server that would be running software RAID5. While I think I have most of it figured out, I'm still a bit fuzzy about this: what happens if I trash or otherwise have to re-install my OS (because I decide to upgrade to a newer version, switch distros, or whatever)? Would the new OS be able to "see" that there was a RAID5 array on the disks and make use of it? Or would I for sure lose all of the data on the array?

Installation :: Wget Install / Upgrading Main Distro Files

Jul 10, 2010

Recently I did a wget for DreamLinux 4beta6.3, which I now cannot burn to a disk. Another issue with linux in general being just a hobby. Why could a dev not set it up where you could just wget the upgrades for the main distro files themselves ?? We already do this when upgrading the apps, so why not the distro? Why could you not start at alpha, and just slap do a rolling upgrade into rc and beyond?

I understand the potential stability issues, but why can't we ghost the drive and hence have a backup on hand and then do this as outlined, and hence do a single install from alpha the distro's grave? I am wasting four months on "Setting Up" each install, only to wind up reinstalling again. This happens in every variation I have come across. Even in stable versions, the rolling upgrade just craps the install, and the major do overs hijacks all my data.

Ubuntu :: Upgrading To 10.04 - Boot Without CD - Get Dumped Into A Busybox Shell After Machine Fails To Boot

May 3, 2010

I was upgrading our lab's dhcp server to Lucid and it totally died. I have it running on a Debian recovery cd right now. I ran into a bug in gtk which I seem to have fixed, but now I have more serious errors. If I boot without a CD, I get dumped into a busybox shell after the machine fails to boot. From the live CD, I tried dist-upgrading again and it dies trying to build and install rsyslog with a broken pipe error. I am at a loss as to what to do from here short of reinstalling (which is the last option as this server has a lot of custom configs on it)

I've just attempted a distro upgrade (to 9.10) and have been left with a machine in an unbootable state.

I tried using a recovery boot through Grub and can see that the boot process hangs after outputting:

Code:

If I ESC to get a prompt, I get:

Code:

I can't run dpkg-reconfigure as I get a read-only filesystem error.

Installation :: Can't Boot Any System Distro / What To Do?

Nov 12, 2010

I've recently bought a Toshiba Satellite C650 with the following system configuration: 3 GB DDR3 Memory, a DualCore Intel Core i3 at 2266 MHz, 320 GB, 5400 RPM, SATA-II Hard Disk and an integrated Intel(R) HD Graphics video card.
I tried at first to install Ubuntu 10.10 through Wubi. That didn't seem to work, as my laptop froze at the moment where all the numbers and letters appear and my hardware is checked (I'm kind of new to this, sorry). A restart was needed. Next, I tried to boot the same distro with a USB Live stick. The same thing happened again.
At first I thought that the iso file was guilty for this, but then I tried a bunch of other Linux distros such as Fedora, Mandriva, EasyPeasy, Puppy, Sugar on a Stick and Slax. I even burnt a Slax Live CD. Nothing changed. I read somewhere that there are video cards that aren't compatible with Linux. Someone recommended me to update my drivers. After I did that, I tried again but without any luck. Another tip was to mess a bit in bios at my hard disk in order to change something from ahci to compatibility. That didn't work either.
I really don't know what to do.

Ubuntu :: Won't Boot - No Sound - Won't Shutdown All The Way Sometimes

Sep 13, 2010

Strange problems and I don't know if they are related. This is Ubuntu 10.4 32 bit on a Toshiba Qosmio x505-q875 laptop dual boot with Winblows 7. One drive bay is a 64GB SSD with windows, my root, usr, and swap partitions on it. The other is a 1TB drive with the home partition.

First Problem: After the Grub menu disappears (defaulting to Ubuntu) about 25% of the time nothing happens. No harddrive light blinking, no cursor, nothing. Everything just stops. I have to use the power button to reset it. Happens several times in a row occasionally. I've never had this happen with Windows.

Second Problem: Sometimes Ubuntu doesn't see the sound card at all. The speaker icon is grehyed out and when I go into sound preferences, it doesn't list any sound device at all. Rebooting fixes it. This happens maybe half the time.

Last Problem: This one happens when the sound doesn't work. When i go to shut down the system, the hibernate and suspend options are not in the shutdown menu, and when I do shut down, it only logs me off. Even at the log on screen, if I tell the system to shut down again, nothing happens. I can log back on it that means anything, but shutting down again has the same effect.

Ubuntu Installation :: PC Won't Boot After Upgrading From 9.04 To 9.10

Mar 25, 2010

I wanted to use Ubuntu on one of my old laptops (a great, speedy modern OS on a modest hardware PC). Unfortunately this PC can not at the time read all CD-ROM's (can't figure out why it does read some) and I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 - the only CD it did read at the time.

I've used it for two years but I never got my wireless card to work (OK, most of the time it was collecting dust) A couple of days ago I finally realized how to use ndiswrapper (lol...) and I was able to get a working Wi-Fi connection on this laptop. I then proceeded to upgrade it over the internet, to Ubuntu 8.04, then 8.10, then 9.04 and, last night, to 9.10.It has worked through each and every of these updates, but after 9.10 the PC won't even boot (after "GRUB loading...).

I have installed a cluster computer with 10 nodes . The manufacturer is HP . All nodes and the master node have redhat enterprise linux installed in them . When I shutdown the nodes from the master terminal using "shutdown -h now" they get shutdown . But they dont get completely turned off . This issue bothers me when the power supply is given , all nodes boot up simultaneously generating a huge heat .

Thing to note : When we shutdown our PC they get completely turned off . When the power supply is given , a press on the Power On button is required to boot the system. But , why does it not happpen in the case of cluster? Is there any other way of completely turning off the nodes from the master terminal ?

Ubuntu :: Desktop Won't Boot After Shutdown / Solve This?

Oct 16, 2010

For the past few days, my Ubuntu server (it is a desktop that functions as a server, Desktop installed) have been very slow.
Today, it stopped responding to ping, I could not SSH into it (once, I managed to come so far that it asked for my password, but I got timed out) and I could not connect via VNC.

I switched it off, to boot it up again. Post completed, and the screen went black, before the white text "Read Error" appeared on the screen.
I shut it down again, waited a minute or so, before switching it back on. This time, the "read error" did not show up. The "text only" startup for Ubuntu showed up, so I hoped it was all okay. It turned out it wasnt.
I have some pictures:
http://yfrog.com/4pimag0127xj

The top lines are code...

Any ideas on what could be the issue here, and how to fix it?

Ubuntu :: Scripts At Boot And Shutdown Not Running?

Jan 16, 2011

I have a small but annoying problem... I have two scripts that I want to run automatically one at boot and one at shutdown. For the one at boot I tried to put it in rc.local or to create a file in /etc/init.d/ based on the others files in the folder but nothing worked... I need it to run system-wide and not once a specific user is logged in.

For the script at shutdown I don't know how to do it but it can be user specific or system-wide I don't really care. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 64bits with kernel 2.6.35-24-generic

PS. I should add that when executed manually both scripts works perfectly well and I don't need those script to run continuously in the background, just run and quit.
