Software :: Xpdf Won't Play Nice With UTF-8?

Jul 20, 2010

I use Vector Linux 6 (based on Slackware 12.1) and I set the encoding to UTF-8 because I use Spanish characters. The problem is that when I try to open files with accent marks, for instance, with xpdf they all look garbled. How can I get xpdf to display the names correctly?

Ubuntu :: Getting Empathy To Play Nice With Compiz?

Oct 19, 2010

Does anyone know the class name for Empathy's chat windows and buddy list? On Ubuntu 10.10:

System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager->Window Management->Place Windows->Fixed Window Placement

Trying to grab the Empathy window class doesn't produce any results and adding "empathy" as a windows class to control only affects the "about empathy" window and not the conversations or the contact list.

It'd be nice if Empathy behaved like the rest of my programs and allowed me to restrict it to a specific workspace. Not sure what class I should be using.

Ubuntu :: Getting GVim To Play Nice With Unity

May 24, 2011

my idea is to have gvim working like gedit in ubuntu 11.04: when you open a file thru unity's dash, and if there's already an open editor, it opens the file in a new tab.To make nautilus open more than one selected files in gvim's tabs, i used to change the exec line in /usr/share/applications/gvim.desktop to "Exec=gvim -p --remote-tab-silent %F". This trick is working ok in nautilus and also in unity, just like the way I was planning.

However, when i try to open gvim itself without specifying any files (from unity's dash or a launcher set) it fails. Can anyone please help me with this ?

General :: Allowing Multiple Simultaneous Rsyncs To Play Nice Together?

Jun 1, 2011

Each day I need to copy N files from a source location to a mirror at a specific time (where N is very large). Let's say I tell multiple CPUs to each run an rsync simultaneously on a subset of the files (network and disk bandwidth are not an issue). Ideally each CPU would be responsible for a disjoint subset of the N files, but in practice this is sometimes hard to guarantee. (Some of the source files might be "claimed" by more than one CPU.) As a result, sometimes rsync I and rsync J will both try to copy file F at the same time.

Using rsync -avz --delete --temp-dir=/tmp remote:/path/to/source/ /path/to/dest/, let's say rsyncs I and J both see this situation to start:

[Code]...

Now rsync J finishes copying but generates an error when it tries to move its version of FileB to /path/to/dest/ because there's already another FileB there that it didn't see when it started.

Does one of rsync's many options somehow handle this situation? Ideally I'd like an option that tells rsync, "Believe in yourself. You can do no wrong. Feel free to overwrite anything your little heart desires." so that it wouldn't complain about the FileB that has suddenly appeared mid-execution

Ubuntu Installation :: Vmware Workstation7 Wont Play Nice

I have vmware workstation installed on my OS and I am now trying to setup several iso.'s as virtual machines inside of vmware.

Here are some of the iso's:

Now, I get as far as the 'Gues Operating System Installation' part and then at the bottom I see a prompt saying "could not detect which operating system is in this disc image. you will need to specify which operating system will be installed". Aren't my iso's operating systems? or are they just apps?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting Rhythmbox And Virtualbox To Play Nice With Jack?

Oct 29, 2010

Ideally, I would be able to have Jack (for supercollider) coexisting happily with other apps that use the audio system, specifically --

Rhythmbox (yes, there are other players but this one interfaces cleanly with my iPod) Oracle virtualbox (which I use for NaturallySpeaking)

The typical recommendation around the web is to configure ALSA to pipe its audio through Jack, which I tried according to [URL]. With that .asoundrc, I could choose ALSA as the driver for VLC and it output okay. But I'm not sure how to tell rhythm box to use ALSA instead of pulse audio. Worse, when I changed my virtual machine's configuration for ALSA (instead of the default pulse audio), the audio connection died -- the alsa ports disappeared from qjackctl's Connections window, and NaturallySpeaking didn't pick up any audio. This is fairly serious because I depend on dictation software to deal with an RSI (dictating English, not code of course) and I'd rather not have to stop Jack just to dictate something.

Rhythm box and virtual box both work perfectly with pulse audio connecting directly to the hardware. In the past, I've gotten pulse audio to route through Jack but it's dicey -- xruns are common and sometimes the audio gets choppy.

What next? I suppose getting the ALSA configuration right is the best thing, but early tests were not exactly encouraging.

(edit) PS I'm using virtualbox for DNS because wine failed me. Completely Plus wine's jack option for audio IO did not work with NS at all. NS works really well in virtualbox so I'm keeping that one.

If I disable compiz I can successfully connect and manipulate my desktop remotely, but I can't do it with compiz enabled on any settings. Is there a way to fix this issue? Would I have the same problem if I installed KDE?

Slackware :: 13.1 - Xpdf Very Slow And Cpu Goes To 100%

Nov 14, 2010

I'm gonna tell you about slackware installation on my notebook, an acer travelmate 800lci.

On this notebook, I successfully installed (and work with) slackware from version 10.0 till the recent 13.0. Upgrading to a new version till using a new internal hard disk (from 40 GB to 160 GB). After upgrade I fully reinstall slackware 12.2 and then upgrade to 13.0.

Now, I had to use the notebook for testing, so I made a new full installation of slackware 13.0 and after some time a new full installation of slackware 13.1.

On this disk (160 GB P-ATA) I have to pass the following parameter to the kernel:

during installation and boot.

This operation solve the issue that can "see" the full size of the disk (160 GB) and not the 137 GB limit.

Only using slackware 13.1, occur a big (for me) problem.

I can fully reproduce it opening any pdf document with xpdf: moving into document with arrow keys make the cpu goes to 100% and page "fault/s" goes from 30 to 8000 and some times 15000 "fault/s". So, xpdf becomes unusable. This problem reflects in similar manner to other software, like firefox.

Here is my question: what type of analisys could I try to solve/analyze this issue? Maybe the kernel, xorg?

On slackware 13.0 all works perfectly.

Slackware :: Add Font Paths To XPDF?

Mar 12, 2010

Adobe Reader ain't available for 64-bit so I'm stuck with XPDF (or Okular, which is better than XPDF) and most stuff won't print worth a hoot. I've been reading the manual pages and somewhere or other I'm missing some thing about adding font paths (or replacing the default font paths). I have the complete Adobe Type Library plus TTF's installed in /usr/local/share/fonts (and they work just fine with OpenOffice.org) but I can't seem to figure out how to get them or the Slackware-provided fonts available to XPDF.

Ubuntu :: 10.04.1: All 'nice' Levels At 0

Sep 30, 2010

I have freshly installed an Ubuntu 10.04.1 by internet.

All is running well, but my nice values are all set to 0. Is there a script that handles these at boot time? How can I reset them to "appropriate" or "normal" levels (e.g. not all at 0)? I know in other installs, my nice levels vary depending on the process and the user.

Attached is a screen shot of my gnome-system-monitor, and aside from init, which I had set to -15, all others are at 0.

Computer specifications:
Linux AMD-LNX000 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 17 20:05:27 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Slackware :: Intel Graphics / Vertical Lines From Xpdf/gv Under Xterm Stick To Xterm Window Making It Unreadable?

Jun 13, 2011

Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.

The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.

On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.

I did all of that, and I can successfully launch TeamSpeak, however there is no sound whatsoever. No mic, and no speakers either. TeamSpeak automatically forces mute microphone and mute headphones on me, and I can't uncheck them. Therefore, something must be wrong with TeamSpeak and my sound setup.

What is the default nice value for processes? The setpriority() function sets the nice value of a process, all processes in a process group, or all processes for a specified user to the specified value. If the process is multi-threaded, the nice value affects all threads in the process. The default nice value is 0; lower nice values cause more favorable scheduling.

This way call processes will get reniced as well. I know better then to run it as root/sudo, but I am at a loss (even searches came up with not much) on how to do this.
