General :: Perl Useful In System Administration And Application Development On UNIX?
Sep 11, 2010It is just a general discussion on "How Can Perl Be Useful in System Administration and Application Development on UNIX and Linux Platforms"? I am doing pretty much well with Bash and PHP. In fact, I am learning and experimenting in depth in those two domains. The project that I am working for these days has several scripts which are written in Perl and Ksh. They interact with Ab Initio graphs and perform extensive jobs. Anyways, my current role doesn't require me to have knowledge of Perl but I don't see any harm in learning something new.
So, before I take it, I want to know how Perl can help me and what I can do with it as a UNIX / Linux System Administrator and Application Developer? I just looked at some of its keywords, functions, and commands. Perl Variables are identical to those of PHP. Conditional Statements, Loops, etc. are also much the same as found in any other computer languages. So, at first glance, I have got this feel that it wouldn't be much difficult for me to learn it. But what do you say? Do I really need Perl when I am focusing on PHP and Bash?
General :: Recommended Directory Structure For Application System Development?
Apr 27, 2010I have to set up my development environment under OEL 5.4. The internal directory structure is more or less fixed, the question is where to put the whole application tree in standard FHS for the development phase.For production, the system will be deployed on a server where data is kept with an Oracle 11g database. Development goes with JDeveloper which has its own internal application/project directory structure; however, I whould like to be independent from this. Unfortunately, by carefully studying the web for FHS, if I will adhere to it I only find ready-made packages to put under /opt, for example. No development aspects are mentioned. make some proposal, possibly with respect to best practices.

Feb 26, 2011All my applications seem to be running at nice of 19 except bash and daemons which are running at 0. My understanding is that the default nice value is either 0 or 10 (forget which) but not 19.Ran search in /etc/sysconfig/ editor and no results for "nice" and looked at the bashrc files and again no lines contain "nice".

Apr 27, 2010I just moved back to openSUSE after spending almost 2 years in ubuntu-land. What happened to the fonts? Why are they so ugly? To me it looks like they are poorly rendered. I installed openSUSE 11.2 on another computer to confirm the problem... it persists. I took some screenshots to compare my settings.

The second screenshot doesn't show, but both settings are using the exact same fonts and the same size. (Except the Window title font). From those two, it should be very clear that Ubuntu renders them more nicely. I don't want to start an UbuntuopenSUSE flame.. How to make my openSUSE machine display nice fonts.. ?
OpenSUSE :: Defaults - Can't Get The Nice Icons For User Login In Kdm
Sep 4, 2011I just installed 11.4 on an old hard drive, probably with 11.3.
All works well, but I can't get the nice icons for user login in kdm.
Of course, I tried to change this in kde system config, but with no result. In fact what I do there do not change anything.
I suspect some sort of permission problem, but how can I simply reset all the global kde settings (The problem arise before login)

Mar 23, 2010I would like to install development tools / libs, such as gcc. But I haven't selected them during the opensuse 11.2 x64 installation, and when I use the yast2/software management to install programming packages, there are many items, and I don't know which should/should not be installed. Even when I select all to install, it seems many conflicts reported. So is there any easy way to install the development packages properly, without reinstalling the os?

Mar 17, 2011In openSUSE 11.3 when I selected the Python Development pattern for install, it included everything needed for Python development. I installed openSUSE 11.4 yesterday from the full DVD ISO and selected the Python Development pattern, but all it installed is the patterns-openSUSE-devel_python meta package, which apparently doesn't include any other software. It didn't even install the python interpreter.
Of course I can easily install what I need manually, but the pattern is a handy one for quick installs that need Python. Is this pattern broken under 11.4 or am I missing something? I couldn't find anything about this behavior in the release notes, known 11.4 bug list on the forums, Google, etc.
OpenSUSE :: Recommendation For Database Development Software
Mar 17, 2010Looking for a recommendation on database development software. I tried Openoffice Database. The program crashes frequently when establishing relationships. If the data types of the relationship disagree, the program crashes. Also, the screen for establishing relationships is too small. I will probably need about 40 tables, and the Openoffice relationship map can realistically handle only about 12.
Apparently Access is up to the task of the development. Ultimately, I want to convert the developed database into a LAMP Web application. Also, I'm thinking of jobbing out much of the development. Is their an equivalent Linux-based solution, or should I hold my nose and go ahead with Access and Windows?
OpenSUSE :: Kernel Module Development Barked
Feb 27, 2011It is bad enough that the kernel gods have basically required that the whole kernel source tree be installed and configured to compile even a simple module but they have made it so a module compiled on one kernel will not work on any other.
To make the situation worse much of the configuration needed to successfully compile a module has been left out of open suse11.3. If you want to replicate the problems may I suggest you attempt to compile the usb-skeleton.c driver example code that is included with each kernel. If it is the intent of the linux community to limit driver development to the professionals then congratulations.
OpenSUSE :: Setup PHP / Apache / MySQL For Development?
Mar 16, 2011On Windows and Mac it's as simple as downloading some WAMP and XAMP stack and clicking "install".
On OpenSUSE I'm trying to do it myself. I went into YaST and installed the "Web and LAMP Server" pattern.
Then I edited the default-server.conf file to point towards my website by changing the DocumentRoot and <Directory "blah blah"> lines.
Then I tried to start apache, but got the following error:

So I just went into httpd.conf and commented out that line.

Jun 12, 2011I'm trying to install the development files via yast i.e. libkde4-devel and I keep libkde4-devel 4.2.80 requires libkde4 4.6.80. Ok I understand this I have libkde4 4.6.2 but no package for libkde4-devel 4.6.2. If I try to install libkde4 4.6.80 the conflicts just keep growing. What do you have to do to get libkde4-devel install on suse 11.4 (x64).

Jan 15, 2010I hunted down kdevelop4 through yast. I found it finally by entering "Integrated Development Environment" in the search text box, clicking "Description" only, and clicking Search. I'm backtracking now to figure out how to find it and other development tools/ide's quicker in the future.I clicked the Technical Data tab for kdevelop4 and in the details, "Package Group" shows "Development/Tools/IDE".In Yast, I then clicked on the "Package Groups" tab and searched on the left-hand side for "Development". But it's now there.
In OpenSuSE 10.3, when I viewed the Package Groups tree structure, there was a node, "Development" which contained kdevelop3. But I can't seem to find the "Development" Package Group in OpenSuSE 11.2.

Sep 30, 2010I have freshly installed an Ubuntu 10.04.1 by internet.
All is running well, but my nice values are all set to 0. Is there a script that handles these at boot time? How can I reset them to "appropriate" or "normal" levels (e.g. not all at 0)? I know in other installs, my nice levels vary depending on the process and the user.
Attached is a screen shot of my gnome-system-monitor, and aside from init, which I had set to -15, all others are at 0.

Oct 21, 2010Since TeamSpeak 2 doesn't come in a nice RPM anywhere, I am under the assumption that I have to go to TeamSpeak's website, download TS2, and install through their script. I did all of that, and I can successfully launch TeamSpeak, however there is no sound whatsoever. No mic, and no speakers either. TeamSpeak automatically forces mute microphone and mute headphones on me, and I can't uncheck them. Therefore, something must be wrong with TeamSpeak and my sound setup.

Jan 12, 2010I'm currently running on a really old computer with one proc and little memory. It's just enough to get skype running but it only works well enough if I change the nice level to -5 or lower. Now the person that uses skype in the house is really the wife, I don't want to teach her how to open htop in command line, fine the pid and then use the correct command to change the nice.What I am looking for is a script (sorry I don't know thing one about programming/scripting) that will change the nice priority periodically for all pid that are skype. This way call processes will get reniced as well. I know better then to run it as root/sudo, but I am at a loss (even searches came up with not much) on how to do this.

Trying to grab the Empathy window class doesn't produce any results and adding "empathy" as a windows class to control only affects the "about empathy" window and not the conversations or the contact list.

May 24, 2011my idea is to have gvim working like gedit in ubuntu 11.04: when you open a file thru unity's dash, and if there's already an open editor, it opens the file in a new tab.To make nautilus open more than one selected files in gvim's tabs, i used to change the exec line in /usr/share/applications/gvim.desktop to "Exec=gvim -p --remote-tab-silent %F". This trick is working ok in nautilus and also in unity, just like the way I was planning.
However, when i try to open gvim itself without specifying any files (from unity's dash or a launcher set) it fails. Can anyone please help me with this ?

the thing is i have a few nice level 19 processes running most the time that eat up all the idle time, this forces my clock speed up and as such makes the fan noisy and uses more power...
