Networking :: Compiz Doesn't Play Nice With Remote Desktop - Ubuntu 10.04TLS

Jun 17, 2010

I want to set my main PC as a remote desktop so I can use it for programming and data storage remotely. I plan to control it with my netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Remix. If I disable compiz I can successfully connect and manipulate my desktop remotely, but I can't do it with compiz enabled on any settings. Is there a way to fix this issue? Would I have the same problem if I installed KDE?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Doesn't See Windows 7 - Doesn't Appear In Boot Menu

Jun 10, 2010

i wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Doesn't See Puppy And Let Boot It From The Menu?

Feb 5, 2010

I have Ubuntu 9.10, PuppyLinux431 and Windows XP on a Toshiba laptop. I like Ubuntu, but the speed of PuppyLinux is addictive, so that was my default boot until I upgraded Ubuntu which included an upgrade to Grub2.

My problem: Grub2 doesn't recognise PuppyLinux. Using information from [url] I have made an executable file named 07_Puppy in /etc/grub.d and did update-grub from root. Still no luck. I can boot PuppyLinux from the grub command line using the following commands:

Just before grub displays the boot menu, I think I see a very brief message about a syntax error, but it's gone before I can read it.

Here is the contents of my grub.cfg:

Quote:

Why Grub2 doesn't see Puppy and let me boot it from the menu?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From GRUB To GRUB2 - Vista Doesn't Appear In Menu?

Apr 30, 2010

I tend to update stuff slower than most - I'm still using Hardy and I probably won't upgrade to Lucid until June-ish. I wanted to test drive GRUB2 so I upgraded following instructions here:When I chainloaded GRUB2, I got a menu that only contained Ubuntu; my Windows Vista bootloader entry had disappeared. I couldn't find a sample "40_custom" entry to modify when I tried to create an entry for Vista myself. Had no problem booting into Ubuntu and I could still boot Vista from the old menu. Spent about 20 minutes on it, then I gave up and reinstalled legacy GRUB.

Ubuntu :: Grub2 Menuentry To Boot Gentoo?

Apr 26, 2011

I've partially installed Gentoo to a separate (RAID0) partition and would like to boot it from my Ubuntu 10.04 Grub installation. I have a /boot on RAID1 (mirror) and Ubuntu root on RAID1 (stripe set.) I have added what I could figure out to

Code:

hbarta@olive:~$ cat /etc/grub.d/40_custom
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0

[code]....

And it starts to boot the Gentoo kernel. (That fails when it cannot find the root partition, but I think that is past the point where grub has done it's work.) what I have wrong in the Gentoo menuentry that causes it not to show up?

Ubuntu :: Getting Empathy To Play Nice With Compiz?

Oct 19, 2010

Does anyone know the class name for Empathy's chat windows and buddy list? On Ubuntu 10.10:

System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager->Window Management->Place Windows->Fixed Window Placement

Trying to grab the Empathy window class doesn't produce any results and adding "empathy" as a windows class to control only affects the "about empathy" window and not the conversations or the contact list.

It'd be nice if Empathy behaved like the rest of my programs and allowed me to restrict it to a specific workspace. Not sure what class I should be using.

Ubuntu :: Getting GVim To Play Nice With Unity

May 24, 2011

my idea is to have gvim working like gedit in ubuntu 11.04: when you open a file thru unity's dash, and if there's already an open editor, it opens the file in a new tab.To make nautilus open more than one selected files in gvim's tabs, i used to change the exec line in /usr/share/applications/gvim.desktop to "Exec=gvim -p --remote-tab-silent %F". This trick is working ok in nautilus and also in unity, just like the way I was planning.

However, when i try to open gvim itself without specifying any files (from unity's dash or a launcher set) it fails. Can anyone please help me with this ?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting Rhythmbox And Virtualbox To Play Nice With Jack?

Oct 29, 2010

Ideally, I would be able to have Jack (for supercollider) coexisting happily with other apps that use the audio system, specifically --

Rhythmbox (yes, there are other players but this one interfaces cleanly with my iPod) Oracle virtualbox (which I use for NaturallySpeaking)

The typical recommendation around the web is to configure ALSA to pipe its audio through Jack, which I tried according to [URL]. With that .asoundrc, I could choose ALSA as the driver for VLC and it output okay. But I'm not sure how to tell rhythm box to use ALSA instead of pulse audio. Worse, when I changed my virtual machine's configuration for ALSA (instead of the default pulse audio), the audio connection died -- the alsa ports disappeared from qjackctl's Connections window, and NaturallySpeaking didn't pick up any audio. This is fairly serious because I depend on dictation software to deal with an RSI (dictating English, not code of course) and I'd rather not have to stop Jack just to dictate something.

Rhythm box and virtual box both work perfectly with pulse audio connecting directly to the hardware. In the past, I've gotten pulse audio to route through Jack but it's dicey -- xruns are common and sometimes the audio gets choppy.

What next? I suppose getting the ALSA configuration right is the best thing, but early tests were not exactly encouraging.

(edit) PS I'm using virtualbox for DNS because wine failed me. Completely Plus wine's jack option for audio IO did not work with NS at all. NS works really well in virtualbox so I'm keeping that one.

General :: Allowing Multiple Simultaneous Rsyncs To Play Nice Together?

Jun 1, 2011

Each day I need to copy N files from a source location to a mirror at a specific time (where N is very large). Let's say I tell multiple CPUs to each run an rsync simultaneously on a subset of the files (network and disk bandwidth are not an issue). Ideally each CPU would be responsible for a disjoint subset of the N files, but in practice this is sometimes hard to guarantee. (Some of the source files might be "claimed" by more than one CPU.) As a result, sometimes rsync I and rsync J will both try to copy file F at the same time.

Using rsync -avz --delete --temp-dir=/tmp remote:/path/to/source/ /path/to/dest/, let's say rsyncs I and J both see this situation to start:

[Code]...

Now rsync J finishes copying but generates an error when it tries to move its version of FileB to /path/to/dest/ because there's already another FileB there that it didn't see when it started.

Does one of rsync's many options somehow handle this situation? Ideally I'd like an option that tells rsync, "Believe in yourself. You can do no wrong. Feel free to overwrite anything your little heart desires." so that it wouldn't complain about the FileB that has suddenly appeared mid-execution

Ubuntu :: No Menu/tool Bar - No Icons - Just My Nice Wallpaper

I tried to change the desktop switcher to rotate cube. On ubuntu 10.10 I had installed compiz fusion. So I went to compiz setting, I looked for rotate cube and I ticked it. When I did this a couple of windows asking about enableing and disableing poped up, and unfortunatley I clicked them without reading. I assumed they were just interface related...

Know when I open my laptop I don't have any main menu bar, or tool bar at the top of the desktop nor application icons on my left. I tried "CTRL+ALT+T" but the terminal does not open. I tried opening with recovery mode but unssuccessful.

General :: Grub2 Failing To Load?

Dec 24, 2010

Very strange Grub2 issue on my Dell Mini 10.

Had Crunchbang Statler on it, and after an update, it would hang at grub, before the grub prompt. ("loading Grub, Welcome to Grub" then blinking cursor, but no prompt or ability to get into rescue)

So I booted into a liveCD, chrooted in, and reinstalled Grub2, purging everything. No dice. Same problem.

So I figured the device maps weren't right, so I pulled off any important files via the live stick, and reinstalled #!. Same problem.

Did a bit of googling, and it seemed like it was most probably not a true Grub2 error, but a bios problem, so I reinstalled XP, flashed to a new bios (A11).

Then reinstalled, this time with Zenwalk (figured it might be a debian thing). Same thing. (note I replaced lilo with Grub2 for puroposes of testing)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dvd Drive Doesn't Play Store Bought But Does Play My Copies Of Them

Mar 10, 2010

After many days of trying to tweak Ubuntu 9.10 desktop i386. This subject will focus on my dvd drive. ...Here is what I have done, but I'm not sure what I did or still need to do, or to do different. ...

Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.

When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.

I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.

I came across the Medibuntu site: [url]

Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)

Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)

Ubuntu :: Applications Menu Failing To Install Properly With Synaptic Package Manager

May 29, 2010

Ubuntu 10.01 Lucid I had a few problems with applications failing to install properly with Synaptic Package Manager which resulted in a slew of launchers in my Applications > Other folder which all delivered error messages. These all had some kind of grey screen icon. I deleted them after uninstalling the applications which failed to install (wine 1.2, wine-gecko 1.2, then later wine 1.0, Wine-gecko 1.0, and winetricks.) I didn't notice that some non-wine applications also were given the grey-screen icon, and accidentally deleted "Archive Mounter." I know that I only deleted the launcher not the application, but don't know how to re-create the launcher in the Applications menu. Would someone...

1 - Right-click on the Applications panel,
2 - Select Edit Menus
3 - Find "Archive Mounter" (probably in "Other" folder)
4 - Select Properties for the launcher, look at the Properties sheet and tell me what the Archive Mounter command is, so I can re-create the launcher manually? And if you could, the path to the icon too

Ubuntu :: Cannot Boot XP From Grub2 Menu

May 6, 2010

I'm having an odd dual-boot problem. Briefly, I can't boot Windows XP from its entry on the GRUB2 menu. If I set the disk order in BIOS so that the machine boots off the drive with Windows XP, XP starts normally. However, if I boot off the Ubuntu drive, which brings up the GRUB2 menu, choosing the "Windows 7 loader" option (why it says Windows 7 when there's only Windows XP is another question!) just makes my system reboot.

It appears there's some problem with the way GRUB2 attempts to start Windows XP. I'm also wondering why GRUB2 thinks it sees the Windows 7 loader. There shouldn't be any Windows 7 anything anywhere. I once had a Windows 7 RC install on the same disk as Windows XP, but I wiped the Windows 7 system partition and reallocated its space as just another NTFS partition. FWIW, GRUB2 is installed on the MBR of the disk containing my Ubuntu install. Windows XP has a different drive all to itself.

Ubuntu :: How To Theme Grub2 Menu

Aug 4, 2011

After a long night I managed to place my grub2 files on a separate partition on my hard disk. I am now able to edit my grub.cfg file directly (no more pesky update-grub commands) and I can create my own custom named menu entries in grub.cfg, the only problem I have encountered is in theming. I originally used burg to theme my menu, but found it to be a little unstable and erratic, so I have decided to use native theming options like font, color, and splash image.

But unfortunately, all the instructions for using these features invoke editing the 05 Debian script to make changes. As I no longer use this feature, I need to understand how editing the Debian script affects the grub.cfg file so I can manually create my menu. If you have themed your grub2 menu, please post the contents of your grub.cfg so I can get a feel for the what commands exist.

Ubuntu :: Netbeans Menu Doesn't Go On Global Menu?

Well, OK, I can live with thatAfter dragging anyting inside Netbeans (windows, menus, ETC), Unity Launcher stops dodging windows and autohiding. It just sits on the screen. It starts to behave normally only after I restart Netbeans. Now- that's pretty annoying.EDIT: Even worse: If I exit Netbeans during debugging session, I must exit Firefox as well before launcher starts behaving normally again. Now, that's entirely unacceptable. Good enough reason to remain on "Ubuntu Classic" (what's left of Gnome that is), and eventually switch do different distro or even... ungh... WAMP.
