Mar 19, 2011Have 3 linux distros on 3 hard drives. lost one distro from boot loader. how do I restore missing distro to boot loader? drive was not written to when one distro (drive) was updated.Example drives a, b, and c each had listing on boot loader, now after upgrade to distro on drive b order on boot loader is drive b then a and none for c.

Ubuntu Servers :: Server 10.04, One Interface Not Brought Up On Boot?
Jan 7, 2011I'm having an odd problem with Server 10.04. I have two interfaces but only one interface is brought up on boot - and it's not always the same interface. Usually eth0 fails and eth1 comes up fine, but sometimes eth1 fails and eth0 comes up. I'm using the same config that was previously used on Server 8.04, but never had this problem on 8.04.

Once the system has booted, if I run /etc/init.d/networking restart, then both interfaces come up fine. However, having read that this is now an upstart, I also tried service networking restart, but get:

Don't know if that's significant or not.
Cannot find a single problem with networking reported in log files, other than bound services failing to start as a result of the interface not being up (dansguardian, squid, dhcp which are all bound to eth0, and therefore fail when eth0 doesn't come up. And when eth1 doesn't come up, the only process that fails to run is clamav-freshclam). Although at one point I did see something about interfaces being renamed which seemed a little odd.
I could just have networking restarted automatically once booted, but this obviously isn't a solution to whatever is causing the problem. There is quite a bit running on the server: Samba/LDAP domain controller with roaming profiles, squid & dansguardian with LDAP auth, postfix & dovecot with LDAP auth, mailscanner, dhcp & ddns, strict iptables policy with nat... so I'm not sure if any of those could have any bearing on interfaces?

I think this must be possible as apt seems to know which dependency packages are no longer required i.e. apt-get autoremove

Nov 14, 2010I'm gonna tell you about slackware installation on my notebook, an acer travelmate 800lci.
On this notebook, I successfully installed (and work with) slackware from version 10.0 till the recent 13.0. Upgrading to a new version till using a new internal hard disk (from 40 GB to 160 GB). After upgrade I fully reinstall slackware 12.2 and then upgrade to 13.0.
Now, I had to use the notebook for testing, so I made a new full installation of slackware 13.0 and after some time a new full installation of slackware 13.1.
On this disk (160 GB P-ATA) I have to pass the following parameter to the kernel:
during installation and boot.
This operation solve the issue that can "see" the full size of the disk (160 GB) and not the 137 GB limit.
Only using slackware 13.1, occur a big (for me) problem.
I can fully reproduce it opening any pdf document with xpdf: moving into document with arrow keys make the cpu goes to 100% and page "fault/s" goes from 30 to 8000 and some times 15000 "fault/s". So, xpdf becomes unusable. This problem reflects in similar manner to other software, like firefox.
Here is my question: what type of analisys could I try to solve/analyze this issue? Maybe the kernel, xorg?
On slackware 13.0 all works perfectly.

But, problem is, I tried to install 10.10, and it would install properly, but it wouldn't load, just brought up the GRUB loader with a terminal prompt. I ended up having to install 7.04, and it works great. but I'd like to upgrade it.

Mar 12, 2010Adobe Reader ain't available for 64-bit so I'm stuck with XPDF (or Okular, which is better than XPDF) and most stuff won't print worth a hoot. I've been reading the manual pages and somewhere or other I'm missing some thing about adding font paths (or replacing the default font paths). I have the complete Adobe Type Library plus TTF's installed in /usr/local/share/fonts (and they work just fine with OpenOffice.org) but I can't seem to figure out how to get them or the Slackware-provided fonts available to XPDF.

Red Hat / Fedora :: RHEL 5 Dual Networking - Ethx (0,1) Devices Are Brought Up Be Changed At Boot Time
Jun 3, 2010I'm having an issue with dual networking on RHEL 5. My initial question is can the order the ethx (0,1) devices are brought up be changed at boot time, so I could bring up eth1 before eth0?
Some background: eth0 is DHCP'd and using DNS, basically this is my primary network. eth1 is an isolated subnet, with a manually configured IP which has no connection to eth0 or the outside world. When I bring up networking it first brings up eth0 and then eth1, what happens is eth1 becomes the 'primary' network of the host and I lose my connection to DNS/NFS/NIS and the outside world.
If I login and manually bring up eth1 first, then eth0 everyone is happy and connections work. So, I'm looking for a solution to either bring up eth1 before eth0 or somehow make eth0 my primary IP and not have it be clobbered by eth1.

May 10, 2011I'm the only person seeing this: xpdf is slow to render PDFs and navigating through a document is ponderous. The problem is there on my laptop ( Core i3 ) and my desktop ( Core i7 ). I played with the ./configure options in the Slackbuild and deleting the -mtune=i686 option made it much more responsive. It's so bad I've got Debian on a separate partition and I boot into that if I need to look at PDFs.

What I'm looking for:
- Debian Based
- KDE 4.X
- Ideally it would still be able to use debian archives (ie like sidux)
- Updates less often than sid, so you aren't a long way behind if you miss a week, but often enough to still have up to date versions of software.

May 27, 2010I need to reinstall my distro, MEPIS, but--mostly just because I feel restless--I'd like to try another Debian-based distro. It has to be Debian-based because I'm comfortable enough with apt-get that I don't want to learn another package management system; and I want to avoid Ubuntu and distros based on it, because I've long since decided I don't like the decreased user control in Ubuntu. What are my choices? If I want to leave MEPIS and don't want Ubuntu, I don't really know what there is other than Debian itself. I don't know if I feel like tolerating the supposedly greater difficulty of Debian, but I would otherwise expect to feel at home in it, since MEPIS is based on it. And does the Debian Project still make a version small enough to fit on one CD?

Networking :: Why Doesn't Distro 9.0 Setup Work For 13.1 Distro?
Sep 6, 2010I have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.
This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.
Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.
I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).
Debian :: Distro - Find Out What Distribution Running?
Mar 14, 2011Is there any easy way (i.e. command or file to view) to find out what distribution I am running? I know that my /etc/apt/sources.list has entries for stable, testing and unstable but I hear that (as of the 30th) "stable" has become Sarge. So if I performed an apt-get update then an apt-get dist-upgrade yesterday should I assume that I am now running Sarge?

I have a computer on my network that I want to use as a local repository for apt. I've got the set of Debian Lenny 5.04 CD's and would like to know how to put all of the packages from those CD's onto this computer and then use it as a local source for my Debian computers to get packages from. The CD's appear to hold all of the packages in the folder /pool if that helps at all.
