Started slackpkg upgrade-up and went to bed. Woke up to find the power had gone out during the night. The computer booted up, but displayed a message that said something to the effect of, "Error occurred during root file system check. You will be given the option of doing maintenance......"I can get to a command prompt, but regardless of what I do a message pops saying it can't find libblkid.so.1

I just installed Fedora 12 and while I was trying to install Skype, there was a system crash and since then I cannot install any other software or cannot even access 'add/remove software'. Whenever I try to install a software or try to open the 'add/remove software' or, 'Software Updates' I get the message
'An internal system error has occured'.
and inside it contains this-
Code:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py", line 2956, in __init__
self.repos.confirm_func = self._repo_gpg_confirm
File "/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/yum/__init__.py", line 717, in <lambda>
repos = property(fget=lambda self: self._getRepos(),
File "/usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/yum/__init__.py", line 496, in _getRepos
self.conf # touch the config class first .....
I tried these using the terminal-
yum clean all
yum metadata
sudo yum clean all
yum clean metadata
and all of these gave me the same result-
Code:
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Config Error: File contains no section headers.
file: file://///etc/yum.repos.d/skype.repo, line: 1
"su -c 'yum -y install skype' "
Everything else is working fine, but I just can not install or update any more software.

I switched from Ubuntu to Fedora and I'm having a little bit of trouble understanding why I cannot update my system. Fedora seems to be a little bit more complicated than Ubuntu to update and to do other things... I'm still willing to try it because it has a good reputation and good reviews so I will go ahead and give it a shot but before I do that I need to update it. I have an HP pavilion notebook dv2000. Just installed Fedora 15 and my system is telling me that I have over 700 updates! when I click on install updates I get an error:

I was finally able to successfully install debian Squeeze on my Netra X1. Upon bootup, however, I get a scrolling message saying:[ 206.790092] eth0: (71) System Error occurred (2)Not really sure what this is about. I never received this when I had it running Solaris or FreeBSD or even Ubuntu's older SPARC versions.I also know that it's unlikely to be a bad ethernet card, since Debian was network-installed, and I never came across this error before.

Fedora 15 software update "unspecified transaction error occurred" at system info before installing updated list. After unchecking every (no arch) update, all the rest (i686) were installed. now all (no arch)updates remain on the list to be installed.

my partitioning layout was as follows
Vista Recovery
Windows 7
GRUB
Extended
-->Fedora 12 (ext4)
so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.

I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.
"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system"
Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).

On my laptop I have a dual boot system, CentOS 5.4 on one partition and Windows Vista on the other. In Windows, I have a program installed that allows me to access my linux partition so I have access to the files. Every time I boot into linux after accessing the linux partition through windows, I get a forced file system check. I was wondering if there is a way to disable or perhaps bypass this check?

I have recently noticed that my HDD fsck during boot up (generally done after 30 mounts) is always skipped. A file system check has never happened. I don't remember if this is the case ever since I upgraded to Lucid or was it after I tweaked some settings.I am a learner who keeps tweaking some minor settings, so I am not sure if I have screwed up something.At boot I get the following message:

A non techie friend has helped an even less techie friend by contacting me by email to discuss an ailing laptop. A few emails were exchanged, with more details, and it was not looking good because it seemed that suddenly the CD drive was not responding, nor any USB devices, the wireless icon was gone, but Ubuntu still seemed to work (for now), with wired ethernet also working. I was struggling to think of what could be done, with the favourite routes of Live CD and Live USB apparently gone.
After a few more hours - another email: 'It's now working! After so many reboots it checked disc for errors and repaired itself! Is there some way of doing that when needed anyway?'I see there is 'Disk Utility', and this would presumably fit the bill, but how does it do checks and repair when the damaged file system is being run, and is currently *mounted*? I thought utilities like fsck(?) could only be run on unmounted file systems? Have I misunderstood the disk utility fs check repair function? And anyway, what might be a good answer to my (nontechie) friend's question 'After so many reboots it checked disc for errors and repaired itself! Is there some way of doing that when needed anyway?'
For the record: (quote) It is a toshiba EA60-155 Model number PSA67E-00300C8J. He put in extra ram to install ubuntu. He thinks he may have deleted something! There is a 'trash' file on his USB drive with loads of stuff in it and he doesn't know how or why but because it won't now read the drive on her laptop we cant replace it! (end quote)

I have over the past couple of months downloaded three daily builds of testing and the md5sums are good on all of them yet I have the same problem with each disk.

Suddenly today during the start up the pc stopped to respond while doing a file system check...
I switch it off, restarted and everything seemed to be fine, i got the desktop without troubles.
Then i tried to boot from the live Key and run a fsck but it didn't work, i got some error like:
superblock could not be read....and at the end it says to run e2fsck
I did it and i got the same error...
So i restarted ubuntu and i decided to try:
And i got a blue screen where i selected the first option (something alike restart in normal way)
At the next restart i finally got the checking and it was fine! why i can't run fsck or e2fsck from live key

I receive these messages after I enter my user_id and password in Ubuntu 9.04;
"An error occured while loading or saving configuration information for update notifier. I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on xp,but, after waiting around 2 hours per instalation I received a error message that says:" unbuntu installer : and error occurred: coercing to unicode: need string or buffer, none Type found. for more information see log file C:1customerlocals-1 empwubi-10.10-rev197.109. I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.

I have a bash script that i created for a colleague to configure the servers he installs. It does package installations, modifies some config files, creates directories.
The problem is sometimes he says that the script skips some steps. There are some steps that require user input and i think he chooses wrong option. (i have tested the script and it works fine).
My question is how can i save the output in a file (or log) so i can check if there are error? I know about the ">>" operators but will this "script.sh >> output.txt" still bring the dialogs for user input (like read input from shell and mysql password dialog from install package)? And how can i record everything he inputs?
I read about logger, but since there are a lot of commands do i have to log every command or can i just log the whole script.
