Fedora :: Cancel Filesystem Check On Boot?

Mar 24, 2010

my Fedora 12 does fsck on boot time to time and sometimes it's really annoying having to wait for the check to complete. In Linux Mint pressing <Esc> cancelled the check; however in Fedora this does not work (nor does Ctrl+C nor anything other I've tried). What is the key to cancel the check in Fedora?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Filesystem Check After Power Outage - WARNING: "Running E2fsck On A Mounted Filesystem May Cause SEVERE Filesystem Damage"

May 18, 2011

I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..

*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message

*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)

Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.

Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Pauses During Boot - Error Occurred During Network Process

Jun 6, 2011

While booting my fedora15, it gets stuck for about 5-6 minutes. Previously there was no problem. I don't know what made this problem. After going through the boot process, error occurred during network process. Using following command I got the result.

Code: # systemctl status network.service
network.service - LSB: Bring up/down networking
Loaded: loaded (/etc/rc.d/init.d/network)
Active: failed since Sun, 05 Jun 2011 21:13:55 +0545; 11h ago
Process: 845 ExecStart=/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
CGroup: name=systemd:/system/network.service

Also right after the long pause following messages are printed
Code: 261.742053 usb4-1: device not accepting address 4 error -7
261.794087 hub4-0.1.0: unable to enumerate usb device on ports

I noted it down as soon as I saw the message after that long pause.

Software :: GRUB When Cloning Machine - Error: "An Error Occurred During Boot Loader Installation"

Feb 13, 2010

I used proprietary software (acronis trueimage) to clone an Opensuse 11.1 machine, onto another machine with somewhat distinct hardware (different motherboard, less memory). I expected to have to change entries in /boot/grub/menu.lst, /etc/fstab, etc. I was told a good way to do this was to use the Opensuse DVD's "repair installed system" feature.

When I ran the repair, I was informed that "bootloader configuration file contains errors". I attempted to re-install the bootloader, but received this unhelpful error: "An error occurred during boot loader installation. Retry boot loader configuration?". When I boot the system, I just see the text "GRUB ", followed by a flashing underscore character.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Unable To Replace Drive In RAID 5 After Filesystem Check Freezes?

I'm a bit of a Linux newbie, but I did manage to set up the following RAID-5 system:1x 500GB system drive on ATA IDE4x 1TB SATA drives in software RAIDLinux = Fedora 13So here's what happened. I set up the system to send me an email every time the mdadm stat file changed, so it would send me emails when in periodically ran a self-test. I was away and noticed that the self-test was going incredibly slow (usually took 8 hours...was on course for taking 250 days!) A colleague decided to just reboot the system.Afterwards, the system would not boot and, while all 5 drives were connected, would stop at an endlessly scrolling error message of: Code: ata4.01: exception Emask 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0

Fedora :: Why Cannot Update System - Error "An Unspecified Transaction Error Has Occurred"

I switched from Ubuntu to Fedora and I'm having a little bit of trouble understanding why I cannot update my system. Fedora seems to be a little bit more complicated than Ubuntu to update and to do other things... I'm still willing to try it because it has a good reputation and good reviews so I will go ahead and give it a shot but before I do that I need to update it. I have an HP pavilion notebook dv2000. Whenever I try to install a software or try to open the 'add/remove software' or, 'Software Updates' I get the message

I tried these using the terminal-

yum metadata
sudo yum clean all
yum clean metadata
and all of these gave me the same result-

Code:

So I went into Windows, and shut it down properly.

Then when I tried to boot into linux, it stops with a low-res ubuntu splash screen and a message that says:

An error occurred while mounting / Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery

So, I press M.

I say "mount /".

It does nothing.

I restart in recovery mode.

It stops at:

Ubuntu :: Unable To Boot - Error - Unknown Filesystem

Oct 24, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and am having a major issue with it not booting. My PC worked fine yesterday but when I tried to boot this morning I get the error "error: unknown filesystem" and under that I get the "grub rescue>" prompt.

At first I thought this was just a problem with Grub that would be easy fixed so I put in my Ubuntu USB and loaded it up in live mode. But when I try to look at my file system from within the live environment I can't seem to see any of my files.

I have looked at the drive in GParted and my main file system (/dev/sda1) shows up as 'unknown', while the swap partition (/dev/sda5) shows up as it should. I have also looked at the drive with the Disk Utility and the SMART Status says the disk is healthy.

I am really concerned about this as currently the system is totally unable to load, not only that but I am also unable to recover my data from the drive which is my main concern as I havent done a backup for quite some time and I have a lot of python code that I have been working on that I really need to get back.

Has anyone got any idea of what to do and how I might be able to sort this out or at the very least recover all my data. I can't understand why this has happened I have not made any changes to the system recently other than installing the updates that came through yesterday. This is a really urgent issue for me and any help will be very appreciated.
