Ubuntu :: Error - The Configuration Could Not Be Saved - An Unknown Error Occurred

Whenever I try to change a user full name, through System / Administration / Users and Groups, I get the following error: The configuration could not be saved - An unknown error occurred. Running Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS 64 bit, freshly installed.
I receive these messages after I enter my user_id and password in Ubuntu 9.04;
"An error occured while loading or saving configuration information for update notifier. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly." then clicking on details box this can be seen;- {Failed to connect configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBIT, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Could not send message to gconf daemon: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus))}
then there's another error message;

I've been having issues with the omega.cert on Pidgin and tried to upgrade to 2.7.7 today. I clicked on the link from the Pidgin site to download the ppa package "pidgin-ppa_0.0.3_all.deb" and tried to open with GDebi Package Installer but it tells me it couldn't be opened because an unknown error occurred.
After an automatic update from Debian I get the following error while starting a root terminal: An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for gnome-terminal. I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on xp,but, after waiting around 2 hours per instalation I received a error message that says:" unbuntu installer : and error occurred: coercing to unicode: need string or buffer, none Type found. for more information see log file C:1customerlocals-1 empwubi-10.10-rev197.109. I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.
I am having a problem installing SLES11 on a new server. It goes fine through the setup until it gets to GRUB, it gets me the following error message: Error occurred while installing GRUB

I'm having problems installing Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook onto my Asus 900. I downloaded the .iso then used the "make startup disc" feature in my Mint 9 desktop machine to make a usb install disk. All appears well at that point. When I try to boot from the usb stick, I get an error message as follows:

The request is not supported. I tried to use bcdedit /set <GUID> device partition=I: manually, but still have the same error.
I used proprietary software (acronis trueimage) to clone an Opensuse 11.1 machine, onto another machine with somewhat distinct hardware (different motherboard, less memory). I expected to have to change entries in /boot/grub/menu.lst, /etc/fstab, etc. I was told a good way to do this was to use the Opensuse DVD's "repair installed system" feature.
When I ran the repair, I was informed that "bootloader configuration file contains errors". I attempted to re-install the bootloader, but received this unhelpful error: "An error occurred during boot loader installation. Retry boot loader configuration?". When I boot the system, I just see the text "GRUB ", followed by a flashing underscore character.
I have a backup of /oracle in redhat linux advance server 2.1,i have taken that backup by tar -cvzf command when untar this backup by tar -xvzf command the following error occurred-"Error exist delayed from previous error"
I tried to install last Ubuntu distribution (11.04) in a laptop that fits setup requirements. I switched from Ubuntu to Fedora and I'm having a little bit of trouble understanding why I cannot update my system. Fedora seems to be a little bit more complicated than Ubuntu to update and to do other things... I'm still willing to try it because it has a good reputation and good reviews so I will go ahead and give it a shot but before I do that I need to update it. I have an HP pavilion notebook dv2000. Just installed Fedora 15 and my system is telling me that I have over 700 updates! when I click on install updates I get an error:

I'm emulating Ubuntu using VMWare and I've upgraded it to Maverick version. When I boot the system I get this error (below the Ubuntu logo): "an error occurred while mounting /mnt/hgfs" I have to click S to continue and the the OS seems to work well.
When I send mail via Evoultion it does seem to send ok but still the following error message comes up: Error while sending message. Failed to append to : Unknown error Appending to local 'Sent' folder instead. Not sure what's up with that but thought I would mention it.

how is limitation with ip_recent where highest value for hit_count is 20,and how i need to modify and recompile ip_recent.But i was not able find anything about either modify or recompiling that module.I have cent os 5.4 64 bit,iptables are installed over yum.Also i have 4 servers with completely identical configuration,yet on two servers portflood works while on other two it reporting that error.Maybe it was different install cd which caused this,but again i dont know why this doesnt work since iptables version are indetical.

I have unchecked the box in the update list to be installed, but the software update insists that this update is needed. I cannot progress any further than this error message..
From four days each time I reload Synaptic, I got the following error:

I had been running a dual boot windows XP & Ubuntu. Graboid worked in both systems. I have now got rid of windows, upgraded to 10.10 I installed wine, winetricks & dotnet20, but when I click on my downloaded Graboid.exe file I get the following error: Command line output code...

I have a problem with Transmission. After using it for over six months without a single problem, it suddenly stopped downloading. In the torrents that do no get downloaded, I get an error message Tracker responded: Unknown error (0) in the info window, tracker tab. But there are torrents with the same tracker that don'thave a problem and get downloaded fineThe logs don't give a clue about whats wrong either.I tried downloading those torrents with Vuze and I had the same problem. What could be wrong?
My system is playing CD's fine but I just tried a DVD (non-BluRay) and I get that error! I have googled about and though I already had the ubuntu-restricted-packages I didn't have all the gstreamer0.10plugins-bad installed (as seems to be the recommended fix). I now have them and MoviePlayer still gives the same error. I also want BluRay's to be playable and I was investigating that when I thought I would check whether normal DVD's were still working (I'm not sure whether I've tried a DVD since I upgraded to MM). The DVD mounts ok and appears on my desktop with the title.

I'm using with success NX server and client on Ubuntu 11.04 on both side. Yesterday the server crashed and now the client can't connect to it. The client works well because if I try to connect to an other server it works well and if I try to connect to this server with an other user it works well. So I think that there is a problem with my user. I have tried to solve the problem as explained in the details of the error. Unfortunately there is no file /var/log/messages so I can't search the code of the exception.
