I've been stupid, and used kleansweep, which deleted a load of files and in the process killed everything. When I boot I get "file system check failed". Then it gives me a command prompt. I really don't want to have to reinstall ubuntu as I have a lot of stuff installed on it.

so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.
I have a Hp Netbook, and my friend installed Ubuntu to my computer. Everything was going fine, until one day my battery died while I was searching the web. I turned it back on and It started checking files and then it took me to a black screen with white letters saying "File System check failed".

I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my HP desktop, but I'm running an older version (8.10) on a live CD so I can at least get online to ask for some When I tried to log on earlier it went to a command prompt and said the 'file system check failed' and to run fsck manually. I entered 'sudo fsck' at the prompt and I selected "y" to fix all the bad inodes, when it was complete it told me to restart, I then entered 'sudo restart' at the prompt and it said 'sudo uuid unknown'. I have not installed anything recently and I'm not sure what to do.

After I log in with the root I get the message mesg: error tty device is not owned by group 'tty' Can the forum tell me how to troubleshoot this issue so I can boot back up again? I have 2 harddrives in this server and only 1 drive was detected when I first installed CentOS. I have one hard disk for my root partition and a disk array on a separate mount point. I rebuilt my disk array, but I didn't delete my original mount points beforehand because I was hoping it would just "pick up". So now when I boot up, the OS tells me that the filesytem check fails because it can't find the array to map to the mount point. I know that I need to edit my /etc/fstab and remove the line that defines my mount point on the disk array. But it appears to be read only filesystem when I am in repair mode. I can't force the write with vi.

Now I can't boot ubuntu normal or recovery mode.I get an error message saying 'the disk drive / is not ready yet or blah blah'.I don't have a livecd to fix it this with... but here is my 'cat /etc/fstab' relevant output

A non techie friend has helped an even less techie friend by contacting me by email to discuss an ailing laptop. A few emails were exchanged, with more details, and it was not looking good because it seemed that suddenly the CD drive was not responding, nor any USB devices, the wireless icon was gone, but Ubuntu still seemed to work (for now), with wired ethernet also working. I was struggling to think of what could be done, with the favourite routes of Live CD and Live USB apparently gone.
After a few more hours - another email: 'It's now working! After so many reboots it checked disc for errors and repaired itself! Is there some way of doing that when needed anyway?'I see there is 'Disk Utility', and this would presumably fit the bill, but how does it do checks and repair when the damaged file system is being run, and is currently *mounted*? I thought utilities like fsck(?) could only be run on unmounted file systems? Have I misunderstood the disk utility fs check repair function? And anyway, what might be a good answer to my (nontechie) friend's question 'After so many reboots it checked disc for errors and repaired itself! Is there some way of doing that when needed anyway?'

On my laptop I have a dual boot system, CentOS 5.4 on one partition and Windows Vista on the other. In Windows, I have a program installed that allows me to access my linux partition so I have access to the files. Every time I boot into linux after accessing the linux partition through windows, I get a forced file system check. I was wondering if there is a way to disable or perhaps bypass this check?

I switch it off, restarted and everything seemed to be fine, i got the desktop without troubles.
Then i tried to boot from the live Key and run a fsck but it didn't work, i got some error like:
superblock could not be read....and at the end it says to run e2fsck
I did it and i got the same error...
So i restarted ubuntu and i decided to try:
And i got a blue screen where i selected the first option (something alike restart in normal way)
At the next restart i finally got the checking and it was fine! why i can't run fsck or e2fsck from live key

When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)

I searched for similair problems in this forum, but the solutions in other posts(sudo apt-get update & upgrade etc.) did not help. I'm not sure if it is related or important, but when it hangs, it also shows something like:

A few days ago I upgraded my debian sid system, and since then systemd does a filesystem check on every boot which takes over two minutes, disobeying the existing settings I had. How can I set systemd to do a filesystem check only once every a set number of mounts, like I had set up before the upgrade?

It comes up with the boot manager to select what OS I want to load but when I select ubuntu it says "Mount of filesystem failed." ,"A maintenance shell will now be started". View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Mini with OS X that I had dual booted successfully with Windows XP for my family. I am a rookie at all this but learned a lot Googling sites that walked me through things. I got bold and tried to triple boot the Mac Mini with Ubuntu 10.04 using rEfIt. I was following this website. MISTAKE #1
All was done to the letter until I accidentally realized I had clicked install on step 8 before I clicked "Advanced" to check off the "Install Boot Loader" and changing the device to the partition I had made for Ubuntu (/dev/sda3/). It finished installing and rebooted with the rEFIt screen with Mac / Ubuntu /Windows icons. Mac started, but both Windows and Ubuntu showed a black screen with blinking underscore in the top left of the screen. I went back to the Mac OS and in Disk Utility I noticed that the Linux-Ubuntu name on the partition I had made changed to "DiskOS3".
Mistake #2
I panicked and used "Erase" in Disk Utility on that partition using the Zero Out Data security Erase option.
Mistake #3
Then I reinstalled the Ubuntu 10.04 cd into the drive and did the install boot loader steps. It started up but the rEFIt screen now has Mac/ two Ubuntu penguins/ and Windows icons. Mac starts and works, but both ubuntu icons and Windows leads to the black screen with blincking underscore cursor.

I have a Dell Mini 9 netbook. The SSD took a dump, so I ordered a Super Talent 16gb replacement. I put it in yesterday, tried to install 10.10 and constantly get errors. The first error, which I haven't had since, was [ERROR 30] Read-only File System. The install obviously failed. Wondering if perhaps the file got messed up in translation, I redownloaded 10.10, reformatted the flash drive (sandisk cruizer 4gb), put 10.10 back on via the program on the Ubuntu site. No luck, but no longer the [error 30]. Tried again using Unetbootin, no luck. Rinse repeat a few times, no errors just a working cursor spinning and spinning and spinning and spinning and.. you get it.
Tried to put WinXP on it just because I was that frustrated, no luck.
Now I'm back to Ubuntu (because let's face it, who wants to deal with Windows, christ they make it so complicated). I'm currently using 10.04 because I was hoping (praying) it might just be a 10.10 thing.
No such luck, now it goes to step 7/7, starts, and 5% of the way thry "creating ext4 file system" it says "the ext4 file system creation in partition #1 (0,0,0)(sda) failed." I have checked the SSD in the Disk Utility, SMART tests are clean. I have gone to terminal and run fdisk and had a smarter person than me look at the copypasta, no errors, I have deleted all existing partitions in gparted and started fresh. I have tried the auto partitioning, I have tried manual, I am going insane. Literally insane. My preschooler thinks I've leaped off the deep end.
Could it be my flash drive? Could the SSD be defective despite the tests coming back clean? What do I need to type into terminal? Is there a way to entirely entirely entirely wipe the SSD to make it fresh-out-the-box clean? I will happily provide whatever you need if it means I can get my husband off my back about this stupid netbook with its stupid tiny keyboard.
The configuration default in Gnome power manager has changed and now I can't access anything but, the log in menu. I made a post about it but, no reply. Now I ask anyone if there is a way I can retrieve my files or fix the power manager config files.I tried to reinstal ubunto but, it only alow me to installed on another partition and booth on either one. I don't think that will work. I tried to use ubunto on a stick but, it does not accept me signing in with the same password (too short). I would apreciate any suggestions to get my files back. View 5 Replies View Relatedi used to use ubuntu 9.04 on my lap compaq 515, it worked well. But on upgrading to the higher versions(9.10, 10.04) the system failed to boot. Whenever i tried to install, the laptop would freeze and just show a blank screen. The Configuration of my system is below
