Mar 31, 2010I want to ensure I have done all I can to configure a system's disks for serious database use. The three areas I know of (any others?) to be concerned about are: I/O size: The database engine and disk's native size should either match, or the database's native I/O size should be a multiple of the disk's native I/O size. DMA: Disks that are capable of Direct Memory Access (eg. IDE) should be configured for it.
Write-caching: When a disk says it has written data persistently, it must be so! No keeping it in cache and lying about it.
I have been looking for information on how to ensure these are so for CentOS and Ubuntu, but can't seem to find anything at all. I want to be able to check these things and change them if needed. The actual hardware involved is very modest. The point is to get the most out of what hardware we do have, even though it's "not very serious hardware" from a broader perspective.

Before I had a router that only went up to 100 Base T and I would setup one box with linux running proftpd. On the other box,I would use win xp pro and use firefox to ftp into the other box and download a file. Download speeds went up to 11.2 MB/sec. Now when I switched routers, I expected something like 120 MB/sec but I'm only getting 5.3 MB/sec. What do I need to change?

Jun 14, 2010I have done a base install with CD#1 and can boot to a prompt and login with root. I cannot use the network. There is no system-config-network program for me to run. There is also no network-manager in chkconfig --list. There is a network item in chkconfig --list and I have turned it on and rebooted to no effect. Googling for base install has found me virtually no information to go on.

My next step is to get some networking statistics such delay, throughput, etc. So, I need traffic to flow through the network for both multimedia traffic and bulk data traffic. How to send files between nodes on the network (I found commands ftp, rcp but do not know whether they are the correct choice for this). ID their any application to perform this?
Also, I want to perform some video streaming between two nodes to study the behavior of real time data transfer. Is thier any application to perform this?

Apr 23, 2015I'm using debian wheezy and i managed to install libreoffice 4.3.3.2 from debian wheezy backports.
The LO program works fine, except that i can't use reports in LO Base. When I'm trying to use a report file that already exists in a base file, i'm getting the message "loading component library <file:///usr/lib/libreoffice/program/librptlo.so> failed.
What should i do to make reports work;

May 10, 2010Every couple of hours OOo Base crashes - just closes the program of its' own accord.
Annoying enough in itself, but at least it usually recovers up to the last point I saved my work. The last time it happened though it didn't even recover to my last save point - it recovered to an old save point! So I have lost 30 minutes' work.

Feb 22, 2011I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and Libreoffice 3.3. My Base is very very slow. I've already tried changing the JRE to the Oracle/Sun latest version and the problem is still there. The problem doesn't seem to be in the file, since I can open it on my Windows 7 Libreoffice, without any problems. Solving this bug is important for me to definitely migrate from Windows to Linux.

Jan 26, 2011I've been using Fedora as a Desktop user since Fedora core 10, but I'm tired of its bugs and crashes and all that jazz.All i need is a stable and free Red Hat based distribution, So that makes "Fedora" and "RHEL" out of the game and "CentOS" and "Scientific Linux" stay in it! Do i have to choose between these two or I have some other options?Between these two, I choose SL because I've read it updates faster and it's better for a desktop user... and of course, As a physics geek I pray to CERN (!) and it's a pretty good motivation to choose it (I've experienced some wireless issues in SL, but that's not a big deal.)So what do you think? Is there a better option left? Do you prefer CentOS over SL even for a desktop user?

Mar 13, 2011I've just installed Opensue 11.4 (gnome-desktop) on my machine. The problem is that, if I open a database-form with libreoffice base, no navigation-bar appeares. The option "navigation" from the view-menu is not active. The database uses the built-in HSQLDB in single user mode. Navigation via libreoffice-basic is possible and I can see the first record - just it is not possible to navigate manually.
