Ubuntu :: 10.10 - LibreOffice 3.3 Base Very Slow
Feb 22, 2011
I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and Libreoffice 3.3. My Base is very very slow. I've already tried changing the JRE to the Oracle/Sun latest version and the problem is still there. The problem doesn't seem to be in the file, since I can open it on my Windows 7 Libreoffice, without any problems. Solving this bug is important for me to definitely migrate from Windows to Linux.

I've recently converted two Ubuntu 10.04 (one 64, one 32bit) machines to LibreOffice. We've used OpenOffice.org since early 2.x The issue is a database file created in OOo and now needing to be accessed in LO. As far as I know, there shouldn't be any issue with file compatibility. On the 64 bit machine, (a Ubuntu server installation - not headless) the file opens with no trouble and is fully accessible. (forms, reports, tables, etc.) However, on the 32 bit machine, trying to access the file over the network on the server via samba (because we also have Windows machines on the network, so I serve it all up via samba) I am able to open the database, but get the following error when trying to access any table, form or report: The connection to the data source "Mattress Prices" could not be
established.

I'm using debian wheezy and i managed to install libreoffice 4.3.3.2 from debian wheezy backports.
The LO program works fine, except that i can't use reports in LO Base. When I'm trying to use a report file that already exists in a base file, i'm getting the message "loading component library <file:///usr/lib/libreoffice/program/librptlo.so> failed.
What should i do to make reports work;

I had made a database in OOO Base, but I guess because of the size, it's not uncommon for it to crash. Now that testing and Sid are now using LibreOffice, is the database any more stable? Or...is there an alternative database package to be used only on a local machine without a server?

I've just installed Opensue 11.4 (gnome-desktop) on my machine. The problem is that, if I open a database-form with libreoffice base, no navigation-bar appeares. The option "navigation" from the view-menu is not active. The database uses the built-in HSQLDB in single user mode. Navigation via libreoffice-basic is possible and I can see the first record - just it is not possible to navigate manually.

After I double click it's shortcut it takes LibreOffice Writer 35 seconds to come up fully. I've reinstalled it, played with the memory settings, no change. If I turn on quickstarter it works fine but as many people have noted, you have to turn quickstarter off before you shutdown otherwise the system hangs.
I would like LibreOffice to initialize within 10 seconds and be able to do a shutdown by just clicking shutdown.

I have set up an OpenOffice (3.2) Base database - tables, mainly, and a few queries. The main table contains about 9000 rows and around 50 fields and there is a second table of 1900 rows and 20 fields and a few other tables with either fewer rows or many fewer fields. The primary key on the main table is a single text field. The .odb file is 4.4Mb. There are no Forms or Reports; the idea at the moment is that I enter data using OO's Table data view. I see that I have an embedded HSQL database and I cannot change dit>Database>Properties because it is greyed out.
Opening the database is reasonably quick (about 5 sec) but then when I want to look at any but the smallest of tables (in data Table view) it is very slow (15 sec on the main table) to display the first group of rows. When I want to move to show a different record it takes just as long to display the new set of rows. It makes no difference whether the new set of records is adjacent (in terms of record order) or a long way off. I need to speed this up x3 or more or I will have to abandon Base as impractical to use.
On the OO Forum some posts talk of separating the database from the engine and others of increasing the cache size. I can't do the latter as access is via the greyed out option and I can't find any instructions for the former. I'm not convinced these would have much effect anyway.

I've recently installed Debian 8 in my machine.
I've got excited when I saw the possibilty to use my Owncloud account (my server is installed on a Digital Ocean cloud machine) directly on the system configuration.
Well, I added the acount there and my owncloud webdav folder appeared on Nautilus everytime I turn my PC on, what's great. So I've started to save my Libreoffice docs on the cloud, believing that I finally got free from google docs.

I have a router that is 1000 Base T and two computers each with ethernet cards that support 1000 Base T. All are equipped with Cat 5e cable. Before I had a router that only went up to 100 Base T and I would setup one box with linux running proftpd. On the other box,I would use win xp pro and use firefox to ftp into the other box and download a file. Download speeds went up to 11.2 MB/sec. Now when I switched routers, I expected something like 120 MB/sec but I'm only getting 5.3 MB/sec. What do I need to change?

I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?
Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean). Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! I also installed grub2 by hand

Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!
When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!
This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

I've been a long time linux & Ubuntu fan/user. Since the clean install of 11.04, LibreOffice keeps crashing. No day would go past when using either Writer or Calc, that it will not crash. (I think OpenOffice had same issue on Ubuntu 10.10 but only later on in the cycle.) The recovery function works, but it's now beyond a joke to continue to work in such a way, given that I have used Linux exclusively. I develop web apps on Ubuntu, but am seriously thinking of going over to Windows 7 or even OSX if this continues much longer.
If I can't get this issue resolved, I'm going to stop using Linux, which I do not want to do. when searching for clues to issue on this forum and others, people mentioned a 'seg fault', this might be the issue I have, as I think I saw this reported on one of the error logs. I think a seg fault may have something to do with memory, but I don't know for sure.

I've been using ubuntu off and on for a while now and haven't gone in depth yet but have recently made the complete transfer from windows. I've been loving it however, I'm trying to link libreOffice Base to a mysql account on my netbook for a course in school but am not getting form controls. I've noticed that these comments were made in the software center and in many forums including this one I believe. I haven't seen a decent response to any of the other posts I saw and have been having other minor issues with libreOffice but have tolerated them so far. This just seems like nobody tested it at all.
I was trying to see what alternatives there were to libreOffice for 11.04. It turns out that it is a total nightmare trying to install and use any other software suite on ubuntu. I purged libreoffice but still cannot successfully install and use openoffice or gnomeoffice from the software center. I search online and in forums and all I see are articles and posts explaining how to ditch other suites and install libreoffice but I'm really trying to do the opposite at this point. I really want to love ubuntu but it is being very difficult to do so right now.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday and have tried to switch OSS by following the explanation in the community wiki. During OSS4 installation, I got this error message:
Code:

Errors were encountered while processing:

Now I can't complete the installation. I tried to move ossinfo.1.gz file but made no difference.

A few minutes ago, I added LibreOffice's PPA to my sources list. When I went to update my computer, this popped up:
Code:
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Type 'a.launchpad.net/libreoffice/ppa/ubuntu' is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/libreoffice-ppa-maverick.list' So I tried reporting this bug by tapping Alt+F2 and entering:
Code:
ubuntu-bug update-manager
Then an error pops up, saying it could not determining the package or source package name.
When I try clicking on Ubuntu Software Centre, nothing pops up
I'm really puzzled and would at least like to remove that LibreOffice PPA so I can use Ubuntu Software Centre.

Everywhere I read, this seems to come up as a very difficult thing. Just want to record how I did it.
In Access, export the table to an Excel Spreadsheet. Using Openoffice, open the Spreadsheet, but save as an Openoffice (.ods) spreadsheet. ( Note - According to the Base help files, if you import an Excel Spreadsheet, it is read-only)
Open Base and Create a database. No tables, no nothing, just create. Now Open this and and also Open the spreadsheet. Select all the data in the spreadsheet, 'copy' it, and in the Database tables area, 'paste' it. I had problems in that it wanted to create a primary key, so added an extra field.
I then went into the database design view, right click on the appropriate field to make that the primary key, and remove the primary key from the unwanted field.
Delete the excess column. This is just for a single flat table, with no linking to other tables. I hope that this helps someone. I did it for a membership database table, and have been able to replicate the query to filter for the Snailmail folks (Those that did not have an email address in the table). Still trying to figure out how to do an envelopes report though.

Code:
apt-get purge gcc-4.2-base and the command more or less threatened to wipe out everything on the server.
Is that the norm, or is it due to a corrupted package database?

Was that the norm or could it be the result of a corrupted package database?

I am currently learning an African language. As I have been learning it, I have put together a dictionary, which I made as an openoffice database, so I could search and edit as necessary. Unfortunately, it now has several thousand entries and grinds to a complete halt if I try and search it. For now I have exported the data into a pdf which means I can look words up, but it doesn'tan alternative programme which would cope better with this much data and be easy to set up? Ideally one I can export my current data into.

I installed Libreoffice on my Ubuntu 10.10 (through wubi), and uninstalled Openoffice afterwards. Everything's ok. But then I continue to receive updates for openoffice modules (which are a lot btw). From the Software Center, currently installed are libreoffice modules together with (I think) their openoffice counterparts. Now the question is, is it safe to remove the openoffice modules? Or does Libreoffice need them, too? How do I remove them completely from the updates?
