General :: Data On Disk Drive Management By OS - Getting Base I/O Unit Size?

Mar 31, 2010

I want to ensure I have done all I can to configure a system's disks for serious database use. The three areas I know of (any others?) to be concerned about are: I/O size: The database engine and disk's native size should either match, or the database's native I/O size should be a multiple of the disk's native I/O size. DMA: Disks that are capable of Direct Memory Access (eg. IDE) should be configured for it.
Write-caching: When a disk says it has written data persistently, it must be so! No keeping it in cache and lying about it.

I have been looking for information on how to ensure these are so for CentOS and Ubuntu, but can't seem to find anything at all. I want to be able to check these things and change them if needed. The actual hardware involved is very modest. The point is to get the most out of what hardware we do have, even though it's "not very serious hardware" from a broader perspective.

Sep 22, 2009

I have a router that is 1000 Base T and two computers each with ethernet cards that support 1000 Base T. All are equipped with Cat 5e cable. Before I had a router that only went up to 100 Base T and I would setup one box with linux running proftpd. On the other box,I would use win xp pro and use firefox to ftp into the other box and download a file. Download speeds went up to 11.2 MB/sec. Now when I switched routers, I expected something like 120 MB/sec but I'm only getting 5.3 MB/sec. What do I need to change?

Ubuntu :: Recovering Private Data - Desktop ?

Jan 7, 2011

Since recently I have installed windows (dont worry I will be back to ubuntu soon enough but I've ran into some trouble), I had installed windows on my main hard disk (I couldn't install windows on my 2nd hard disk for some reason).

There were 2 partitions on the main hard disk, 1 which had all my data and another which had all the system fyles for ubuntu on it I believe.

Now I deleted the small system fyle partition and installed windows over it thinking I'd have all my data on the other partition when I needed.

But when I started up ubuntu with a live USB (I had made it prior to deinstalling ubuntu because I wanted to go back asap) and browsed my files, I noticed that I couldn't get to my private data anymore!

The /home/user partition is still there but it only has a file in it which says something like "recover-private-data.desktop" but when I double click it (made it executable) it just pops up a terminal real fast and disappears.

Ubuntu :: Way To Transfer Data To New Desktop Computer ?

May 29, 2011

I have a number of queries but will start with one. I presently operate 11.04 Classic (no effects). OS is NOT set up as dual boot. As I am considering purchasing a new Desktop, I am wondering what is the best way to recover such things as folders, Firefox bookmarks etc. for four users.

I do have a external HDD which I guess could be used for a possible backup if that is the way to go! The new computer will probably have Windows 7 installed with which I assume I would probably dual boot.

Ubuntu Security :: UNABLE - Access Private Data Desktop

Oct 12, 2010

I have a seperate partition for my "/home" folder. Whenever I install a new distro I format my "/" folder.

This way I was able to access my old home data files since I install using a different username. Everything worked fine until last Sunday.

10.10, unlike other versions of ubuntu, has encrypted my old username in my home folder.

Then using this document [url]

I was able to mount my hard drive again. But all the file and folder names are like this.

Btw I don't remember selecting an option to encrypt my old home directory in the first place, what is this ?

Software :: Backup Of Data To Both Networked Desktop And USB Hard Drive?

Mar 2, 2010

I am under orders from She who must be obeyed that I must fully backup her data as she had a loss of information due to a hard drive failure.Presently I am having her make available her info as shared documents on her XP system and I am copying this data over to my Ubuntu (Karmic) desktop. I would also like to have a USB Hard Drive save the information in order that I can safely store this away from a live system.

So far things are working not too bad but She wishes to have all her backup that was available on DVDs and salvaged from posted material assembled as one complete resource. I can with some effort put this into some semblance of order but do not feel like doing the work twice.I would like some method of easily copying / transferring data to the external HD. Additionally I would like to be able to update data daily and be able to with minimal effort have this synced onto the external HD.

Ubuntu :: Converting MS Access To Openoffice Base?

Sep 23, 2010

Everywhere I read, this seems to come up as a very difficult thing. Just want to record how I did it.

In Access, export the table to an Excel Spreadsheet. Using Openoffice, open the Spreadsheet, but save as an Openoffice (.ods) spreadsheet. ( Note - According to the Base help files, if you import an Excel Spreadsheet, it is read-only)

Open Base and Create a database. No tables, no nothing, just create. Now Open this and and also Open the spreadsheet. Select all the data in the spreadsheet, 'copy' it, and in the Database tables area, 'paste' it. I had problems in that it wanted to create a primary key, so added an extra field.

I then went into the database design view, right click on the appropriate field to make that the primary key, and remove the primary key from the unwanted field.

Delete the excess column. This is just for a single flat table, with no linking to other tables. I hope that this helps someone. I did it for a membership database table, and have been able to replicate the query to filter for the Snailmail folks (Those that did not have an email address in the table). Still trying to figure out how to do an envelopes report though.

Ubuntu :: Permissions With LibreOffice .lck Files In LO-Base?

Feb 17, 2011

I've recently converted two Ubuntu 10.04 (one 64, one 32bit) machines to LibreOffice. We've used OpenOffice.org since early 2.x The issue is a database file created in OOo and now needing to be accessed in LO. As far as I know, there shouldn't be any issue with file compatibility. On the 64 bit machine, (a Ubuntu server installation - not headless) the file opens with no trouble and is fully accessible. (forms, reports, tables, etc.) However, on the 32 bit machine, trying to access the file over the network on the server via samba (because we also have Windows machines on the network, so I serve it all up via samba) I am able to open the database, but get the following error when trying to access any table, form or report: The connection to the data source "Mattress Prices" could not be
established.

Ubuntu :: Apt Freezes While Updating Base-files_5.0.0ubuntu20_amd64.deb

Jul 25, 2010

Lucid Lynx keeps giving me headaches. This is the second update to bork my system. I update my system daily and yesterday's update (July 24th) simply failed to install. It froze on Unpacking replacement files. I left it running and went out, came back 36 hours later and it was still at the same point.

Killed apt, dpkg, then removed the locks (/var/cache/apt/archives/lock and /var/lib/dpkg/lock), ran sudo dpkg --configure -a, and ran the upgrade again. Again it freezes unpacking base-files_5.0.0ubuntu20_amd64.deb. Killed everything again and tried it from the gui and same result.

My system won't update. And since a kernel update is listed among the things to be updated, I am not going to be able to shut down my computer, lest I can't boot it back up. And since the system now sees the unfinished install, I also cant install any new software. Here's where it freezes.

Code:

Preparing to replace base-files 5.0.0ubuntu20 (using .../base-files_5.0.0ubuntu20_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement base-files ...
