Debian :: Only Installed Base System, Doesn't Find Package "gnome"?

Jun 28, 2010

Well the topic name says it all. I only installed the base system and when I try "apt-get install gnome" it tells me it can't find package "gnome".Now, I'm actually to much of a noob to try to build my own Debian from the base system and up. But it still seems to be the easiest option. When I try "Debian GNU/Linux on CDs" I can't get online. I start Iceweasl but it just gives me that message telling me that it can't find the website I tried to enter (e.g www.google.com).When I try the net install I get "Bad Archive Mirror" at the configure apt part. I've tried searching your forums for this and it seems to happen to a lot of people but I still can't find a solution in any of those threads

Debian Installation :: Can't Install Base System: Files Corrupt?

Jul 24, 2010

I downloaded the first Lenny DVD for amd64, wrote it but on trying the install on my laptop (Gateway NV5389u) I cant get past the installing base system step: I get an error that some files are corrupt / cannot be read from the DVD. I am wondering whether there's a way I can download a minimal version or just the files needed for the base system installation then use the same DVD to install the packages, coz I have a terribly slow internet connection it took me a whole 2 days to download, and I surely cant stand any more of it.

Red Hat :: RHEL5 AP Versus Base Version Support

Jul 19, 2010

We will be installing some ibm software on our 2 Quad Core Intel server and ibm lists the OS requirements as RHEL 5 Advanced Platform Update 3 but we have the licenses for RHEL 5.3 (non AP). The question is, since we are not planning for any type of virtualisation and will have a single instance of OS installation, is there any reason (OS level) for the products being not supported on base version?

(I am also checking with IBM but would also appreciate some input from Red Hat as well) In other words, are there any hard dependencies or differences between AP and base versions other than virtualisation support?I just read that base version support only up to 2 CPUs. Does this include the Cores or it is just physical CPU sockets number (i.e will 2 CPUs with 4 core each still be supported).

Ubuntu :: Install The Latest Version Of GNOME 3?

Jul 23, 2011

#1 : Open synaptic package manager and add the PPA (Settings -> Repositories -> Other Softwares, then add the PPA given below ) for GNOME 3.

ppa:ubuntu-desktop/gnome3-builds

#2 : Then, update the repository packages (using Reload button).

#3 : Now search for gnome 3 package and install it.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-desktop/gnome3-builds
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop3

But This does not work with Lucid 10.04 as the software repository for Lucid (referenced above) does not exist.

Debian :: Install New Version Of Glade?

Apr 27, 2011

I've been having several serious problems with the ancient version of glade included in squeeze. Now it is entirely unusable. I'm convinced the only way to fix this rediculous mess is to install a newer version. Guess what? testing and unstable have the exact same version as squeeze. The experimental one can't be installed because out of the 20 or so packages it needs installed to run 18 are missing. Is there a half-decent repository where I can get a new-ish version of glade? Try compiling from source and tada: My "intltool" is too old whatever that is.

How can I do it? My current libtorrent-rasterbar package is version 0.13 (I've ran apt-get update).

I DON'T want to install anything else. The last time I added a 'sid' source to my sources.list, it installed the untested version of EVERYTHING. Due to this, I had to reinstall the OS. I don't want this to happen again.
