Software :: Building Multimedia Software - Finding Dependencies?
Feb 17, 2010
Downloaded multimedia software sources, and am looking for the dependencies needed to build it. Have some questions on what to do. What is needed to get these supported on the Linux box? If there is a particular library needed, what is the library name and website for sources?
Mozilla XUL/ GECKO support
Joystick support
Renoir
DVB support
XMLPRC support
Also, I would like to add additional sound support, could someone help on if these different sound support options conflict with each other?
OSS
ALSA
Jack
PulseAudio
Currently, I have OSS and ALSA...but was thinking of adding Jack and PulseAudio.Would this cause a conflict?

I'm looking to install, and perhaps create a SlackBuild) for an application that I think might be interesting.
The dependencies listed are:
libx11-dev, libxt-dev, libimlib2-dev, giblib-dev, and libxinerama-dev
I've checked to see if the packages are installed w/:
Code:
I've also looked for any existing SlackBuilds, but the only one that showed up in the database is: "giblib"
Where can I look to find these dependencies, their sources, or determine whether they're already installed in Slackware64 13.1?
Also, how would one determine if this can compile for a 64bit, non multi-lib install?

Im trying to build ffmepg with shared lib under ubuntu 8.04 hardy. Im was following these instructions :
>> Install FFmpeg and x264 on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS <<
But it was not for shared library. So in the part 7. I added "--enable-shared" to the "configure" command but when I compile ("make") I ve got an error:
"
/usr/bin/ld: /usr/local/lib/libopencore-amrnb.a(wrapper.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against `a local symbol' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
/usr/local/lib/libopencore-amrnb.a: could not read symbols: Bad value
[code]...
I read another thread saying how to resolve this error :
>> trouble with ffmpeg and shared libs <<
but its still make the error when i follow these instructions...
I decided to add "--enable-pic" flag to "configure" but the error still happen.

I thought it would be great to be able to play DVD's so I installed an update that would enable this. The multimedia update was 1.3 Mb but the dependencies was about 650 Mb! Among others I had to update the whole Office pack. Is this a "feature" I have to go through on every installation or is multimedia special?

In KDE I have no System Notifications, Kaffiene, Amarok2, Amarok and Xine immediately exit when opened without an error. If I try to open the System Settings/Multimedia or System Settings/Notifications control panels they also exit without an error. I have audio in other applications, MPlayer, Skype, VLC, Songbird, etc., as well as from the Konsole. I've tested Konsole audio using the published guidelines in the Audio HowTo, 'speaker-test' works fine for all users. In Yast2 I can configure and test the audio card without errors, but I am not able to get USB headphones working. I have been through the 'Check your multimedia problem in ten steps'. There are no errors or missing dependencies showing up. I've booted from the 11.2 Live CD and everything worked fine including KDE Notifications and application audio. I've tried deleting my .kde4 profile, this didn't fix the problem, and application and control panel behaviour remained the same with a clean profile.

I'm about to install Solr on one of our test servers running Ubuntu Server 10.04.1, and the dependency lists for both solr-jetty and solr-tomcat have me very confused. Here's what I get back from the dependency tree for solr-jetty:
Code:
ant
ant-gcj
ant-optional
ant-optional-gcj
[code]....
What's the deal with all the multimedia and fonts stuff in there? Come on, hicolor-icon-theme? This is a headless server, I don't understand why Jetty or Tomcat or the underlying OpenJDK packages would require packages like libasound2, libflac8,libvorbisenc2 or any of the other multimedia packages in there. The font packages also have me confused. To make matters more confusing, the dependency list for the same package on my Ubuntu 11.04 desktop machine doesn't seem to have the same multimedia "needs".

I am attempting to install the Linuxant ALSA driver to make my sound work properly (speakers muting when headphones plugged in). This worked on Lucid, but on Maverick the installation fails at the "building modules" stage. It directs me to a logfile, which I have reproduced here:
Code:
rm -f .depend *.o snd.map*
rm -f modules/*.o modules/*.ko
rm -f *~ out.txt *.orig *.rej .#* .gdb_history
rm -f doc/*~
rm -f config.cache config.log config.status Makefile.conf
rm -f utils/alsa-driver.spec .....
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.35-22-generic'
make: *** [compile] Error 2
The package partially installed I have no sound at all. I have kernel headers and every related -dev package I can think of installed. I'm running 64-bit; could that be an issue?

I downloaded the deb from the Phoronix site, installed it, and found out there were missing dependencies: php5-cli php5-gd.
These took up about 10.5 MB. Next I ran 'phoronix-test-suite list-tests', agreed to the license, then ran it with 'gui', and found out that I needed to load the 'PHP GTK' module. There is no Debian package ( at least no combination of gtk and php in description or name returned any results ), so I downloaded the source and read the instructions in INSTALL.
When running buildconf, it died due to 'phpize' not being found. This binary only comes with the php5-dev package, another 12 MB. After installing that package, buildconf dies with

When I try to install Acidrip I get this message: Package Dependencies Cannot Be Resolved.
Trying to install Acidrip from Synaptic I'm told: Could not intsall or upgrade package. With this additional information:
Depends: mplayer but it is not going to be installed
Depends: mencoder but it is not going to be installed
So, I try to install mplayer and get this message:
Depends: mplayer-nogui but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libx264-67 (>=1:0.svn20090502) but it is not installable
I try to install mplayer-nogui and get:
Depends: libx264-67 (>=1:0.svn20090502) but it is not installable
Now I'm stuck in a point where I can go no further. I really like AcidRip and have been using it for more than two years through all of the upgrades until Lucid.
I've tried installing all of the non-free codecs, both audio and video with no result.

I was experiencing problems in Totem (Movie Player) seeking through some mp3 files. This problem, luckily, was solved (as per this launchpad bug post) by swapping the package:
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
for the package:
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse
The only problem being that the package Miro requires:
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
So, this makes me have to choose between Totem and Miro. I'd like to use both, fully enabled.

I have all multimedia packages installed as the instructions of opensuse site (ffmpeg, libdvdcss, ...) and plus some others not mentioned there (gstreamer, libav ...).Recently I was watching a dvd in kaffeine but several times the video and audio had small stops of about one or half second. It even came to the point of skipping a bit of the video. I tried vlc and the same thing happenned up to a point where the video froze at all. Also in other dvd's, when I tried to watch the content of a menu option vlc skipped the first few second of that scene before playing it. I tried smplayer and the exhibition of video was perfect except by the fact that it don't recognize dvd menus and subtitles. All mplayer gui's don't recognize them.So what player available for opensuse is able to recognize menus, subtitles and at the same time play dvd movies without other problems?

I found out that there isn't a sound module for the card that is in the computer. I know that is no reason to be happy, but at least now I know the reason why the sound doesn't work.My sound card is an HBA ATI SB.How do I go about finding a sound module? If that module can be found, how would I go about installing it?I'm new Linux and don't know anything about programming.

I wish to play a training video. When I click on the link I get a prompt to open with RealPlayer. Since I do not think I have RealPlayer installed I checked the link and it an .asx file. I guess it is a link for streaming the video. Whatever, which playing software should I install? I am aware of the multimedia tutorial on this site but am not clear on my objective as there are so many player options apparently available. It would help if I knew what I should be using to play these videos.
