i'm trying to build gnome3 using the jhead script on [URL]... but it fails every time. has any body else had better luck with this? I'm using the script not the repo as they are out of date atm the last part of the scripts error from
I am fairly new to Linux and have been striking hassles with my AWUS036H (RTL8187) under Debian Lenny. The standard (built in) driver works but reception is pathetic compared to the same card under Backtrack 4 or even Windows 7. I have tried to build drivers which I got from the Alfa website, the Realtek website and also the Linux Wireless project page. All of them fail during Make with an Error 2. I don't have the error in front of me (had to go back to Windows for the moment) but it is identical to the one this guy gets:
darkReaction:/home/georanson# cd /home/georanson/Desktop/Downloads/ndiswrapper-1.52 darkReaction:/home/georanson/Desktop/Downloads/ndiswrapper-1.52# make make -C driver make[1]: Entering directory '/home/georanson/Desktop/Downloads/ndiswrapper-1.52/driver' Makefile:35: *** Cannot find kernel version in /lib/modules/2.6.18-6-686/build, is it configured?. Stop. make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/georanson/Desktop/Downloads/ndiswrapper-1.52/driver' make: *** [all] Error 2
I get the error 2 code and the reference to "kernel version".
After installing a fresh Jessie, upgrading it to Stretch and then installing gnome. I see this white page with this weird error when I enter my password to log into my account in gnome:
Code: Select allOh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again.
Sometimes the error vanishes after a second and the desktop comes up with no problem and sometimes I get logged out automatically.

I upgraded to jessie today and I am having problems with my background. When I log in, the background tries to start on the external monitor but then it fails to load. I can change the background in settings but it does not show up. The background just becomes black and I am not sure why.
I use Slackware 13.0 with the 2.6.33.2 kernel, and I use GnomeSlackbuild.I tried to get help on their discussion group, but I didn't get any.I'm trying to build gnome-power-manager 2.30, because it uses the new upower interface (so it seems). I have GTK+ 2.18.9.
when i ran jhbuild build as a normal user, i found below messages before it failed
Code: Please add the files codeset.m4 gettext.m4 glibc21.m4 iconv.m4 isc-posix.m4 lcmessage.m4 progtest.m4 from the /aclocal directory to your autoconf macro directory or directly to your aclocal.m4 file. You will also need config.guess and config.sub, which you can get from ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/config/.
I am currently working on Debian based Operating System, and my objective is to make a live CD.
I ve followed the specified steps to buid a live CD, and finally I ve made an .iso file too.
Now,I am facing some issues to execute that .iso on Qemu(Virtual Interface),those are:
1. While builing it into an .iso,I skipped the md5sum step, is that mandatory to be built for making a live CD?
And when I am trying to make an MD5SUM using the following command, Its giving me the following error:
Kindly specify me, where exeactly the error in the command for creating the md5sum?
2. While executing the .iso file in Qemu using the following command :
And the I am able to watch the Operating System booting initialization and then when I select the option as "Install as Live CD" Its giving me the following error:
I request who ever reads this thread, please send me some kind of a response.I'll be thankful to them.
Using 11.04. Every time I install a program (any source - software center, Update manager ) at the end of the installation message it says operation failed. But ... here is the big but. The software gets installed.
Did not find much here regarding building Gnome 2.30 from source. I'm using jhbuild to build the gnome 2.30 desktop. I have everything, to my knowledge, installed to build gnome. I get an error when trying to build the libIDL library. Anyone have any clue as to what I need installed or changed in the configuration file to build libIDL?
I have recently updated my GNOME installation from 3.x to 3.14. Suddenly, there are many glitches. The power buttons on the power menu does nothing, I am forced to shut down via the terminal, everything goes black every now and again, and there is a weird colour pattern behind some icons when I hover over them. But most importantly, the icons and text do not show up on the "Activities -> Show Applications -> All" menu. They still there, as you can see the opening animation before they disappear, and I can click on them, but you just can't see them. The "Frequent" menu works fine. Here is a YouTube video I have made to explain my problem.

I did change the icons, but this was after these problems started happening, and so it should be un-related.
its been years since I've compile anything so at a loss at what to do next. Emerald keeps giving me errors during "make": I've installed all deps listed here: [URL]
This is what I end up with:
make all-recursive make[1]: Entering directory `/home/qwe/emerald' Making all in libengine make[2]: Entering directory `/home/qwe/emerald/libengine'
why, every time I started gnome, update-manager show me the error icon?seems like there are errors but if I lunch apt-get update or aptitude update it works great.
I am running Lenny and using VirtualBox OSE 1.6.6. In order to try squeeze I installed it in a VM. I tried to install Guest Additions also, but i get this error:

I checked what /var/log/vboxadd-install.log had to say:

I tried with 3 versions of the kernel 2.6.32-5-686,2.6.32-5-484,2.6.32-3-686 but I cannot get it to work using any of them. Also I tried to install version 2.6.30-2-686 but I couldn't since synaptic said that it Depends: linux-kbuild-2.6.30 but it is not installable.
i have got an ISO file that i need to burn.gnome baker often fails... i have got a netbook and my external burner is sdrw-08d1s-u..... chose a burning program 4 ubuntu that burns also mp3 avi ecc..
I've just installed lenny from dvd, and am just settling in. I'm curious about virtual machines. so I've installed xen. With xen comes qemu by default. Now the setup I've recently become familiar with is Suse-11 which is quite slick. In Suse, Yast provides a distribution prepared virtual management section for xen, including an installer. Debian's setup is similar but not a clone. I want to try out the installer. Aside from the differences, debian has a screaming deficit. On booting dom0 in Lenny, if fails to get into gnome, badly. I can tell what's probably wrong, but I need to fix it. Now I'm also a gentoo fan and very practised at posting queries, so here goes.
Debian's config for X is somewhat unhelpful. The xorg.conf just states Configured device and configured monitor for its components. If it expanded on just what the settings were it would help. What I have is a frambuffer driver not loadinf or being implemented.
I've recently been tasked with setting up a couple linux servers and have run into an oddity. Using the default install for Wheezy to set up a basic LAMP stack, I have noticed after joining the computer to my windows AD domain, the Add/Remove Software application no longer prompts me for authentication and will not remove or add applications. I installed samba, winbind, and krb5 using apt-get from the root console following the procedure listed here. [URL] ....
Today I upgraded my system to the Nvidia driver 340.93 and 4.2.0-1 kernel on Debian Stretch.
While I wait for the gnome login screen to pop up I get the "Oh no something has gone wrong" message.
When I log in from another terminal and execute startx , gnome initiates and starts although settings like my resolution and other xserver settings are not loaded.
From the journalctl I believe the error is located in the following section:

I reinstalled the xorg-xserver and the nvidia drivers and I get the same behavior.
Looking for some info in order to reconfigure the gnome-session to work?
I have tried installing Vmware-Server 1.0.10 on Fedora Core 12. After installing all packages it fails on building the vmmon module. In the internet i found many patches and vmware-any-any-updates...but nothing worked. My Kernel Vresion is 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.i686.PAE...
I am trying to build ORBit2 as a dependency for GConf and then google-chrome.
This is a multilib system and I want 32 bit chrome.
Both my 64 bit and compat32 packages are all current as of today per ftp://slackware.mirrors.tds.net/pub/slackware/.
I have edited the Slackbuild as follows:
Code:
The build fails each time with:
Code:
I am using the newest version of ORBit2 as the above indicates, but this is just to see if the newer package would build. The X.X.17 version failed with the same output.
I have run:
Code:
I've had no problems building this package with current in a pure 64 bit environment.
I like to rip DVDs to iso before taking my laptop on long bus/train rides and am at a complete loss as to why I can no longer rip.
First, dvd::rip failed. Then `dd if=/dev/cdrom of=file.iso` failed. Then right clicking the cd icon on desktop and clicking copy (via brasero) failed. Each of the above worked at some point, and now all are giving me an i/o error like:
I am trying to build a system that will run both KDE and GNOME. I currently have just GNOME installed. So I need to install KDE and KDM (which I know how to do). The thing that I don't know how to do is make it default to KDM when it boots rather than GDM. Also I need a way to get rid of the GNOME apps in the menus in KDE and the KDE apps in the menus in GNOME. Also, this system in running Fedora 11 x86_64
Now everytime i start amarok it keep crash. This is the terminal output:
ari@linux-2tny:~> amarok InnoDB: The log sequence number in ibdata files does not match InnoDB: the log sequence number in the ib_logfiles! 110109 2:47:25 InnoDB: Database was not shut down normally! InnoDB: Starting crash recovery. InnoDB: Reading tablespace information from the .ibd files...

I don't have idea what's the problem. FYI, I installed nvidia driver before this happens but donn't know if that is related to this problem.
I recently upgraded from 10.04-11.04 using the 11.04 CD I don't use any effects, I log on the sessions using Ubuntu classic (no effects). Whenever I try to play a video, the gdm restarts and puts me back at the login screen. I installed vlc thinking it might help but no deal.
*edit* I tried all different types of video outputs in vlc, the default seems to work the best, but as soon as I click the vlc window, try to resize it, or access any menu on vlc or try to fullscreen the video gdm crashes and restarts.
I have hauppauge pvr-350 which has an mpeg2 decoder with an RGB and s-video out to let me send video to my tv. I'm using the ivtv drivers which work well. To test the card I ran
Code: cat test.mpeg > /dev/video16 -bash: /dev/video16: Permission denied So then I did Code: ls -l /dev/video16 crw-rw---- 1 root video 81, 5 2010-10-22 12:21 /dev/video16 sudo chmod a+rw /dev/video16 [sudo] password for patrick: cat test.mpeg > /dev/video16
However the permissions get reset everytime I reboot. Is there any way to pass an argument to the ivtv driver to change the default permissions?
