OpenSUSE :: Enhanced Zoom Desktop Doesn't Zoom
Jan 18, 2010I have installed openSUSE 11.2 in my PC. To enable compiz I have download and installed (using OneClick) the nVidia driver for my nVidia GForce 8500GT video card.I need to enable the 'Enhanced Zoom' because I'm a low vision user and I need a magnifier better than Orca.The problem is that when i try to enable it (from ccsm) there isn't any zoom... I try to press META (or Super) and scroll with wheel (SUPER + Button 4) but nothing.
I have see that if I press Super+2 (increase zoom) the mouse pointer moves to a specific screen zone but the screen will not zoom.

Jan 2, 2010I need to change the default zoom level for Evince. There must be some way to do this. Besides, can Evince start without any PDF file loaded? Also, what is the command line to execute evince? (I run Linux Mint 8 based on Koala 9.10). Whenever it loads a file for which it assigns a zoom level more than 175% or 200%, the whole PC hangs if I click on the "reduce zoom" icon in the toolbar. This is a very big regression.
This is ridiculous! Even ePDFViewer is better than this. I really would like to stay with Evince for the time being, and not need to move to Foxit.

Oct 29, 2010I've installed Xubuntu 10.10 on my old PC and I'd like to get Compiz working. I have a vision problem and I've found its desktop zoom and color inversion plugins to be rather helpful.
I am using Xubuntu. My computer is a custom build PC with a 1.2GHz AMD Athlon XP, 1GB of PC2700 RAM, 8x AGP Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 card w/256MB DDR-RAM, IDE 160GB hard drive, Sound Blaster Live 5.1, and 16x DVD-RW.
Has anyone gotten Compiz to work with XFCE and how can I get this to work?

Jul 9, 2010I have just installed Fedora 13 on my Lenovo Ideapad S12 (company laptop, evaluating Fedora for companywide use on all laptops) and a facing a weird problem with KDE4 and NetworkManager / knetworkmanager. The laptops wifi card is a Broadcom BCM4312 and I have successfully extracted the necessary b43 firmware. The b43 module loads on boot and the wireless card is activated and ready to use. However, NetworkManager doesn't seem to agree and has wireless disabled by default every time I reboot or even logout / login. I have to check the box manually after which it automatically connects to my wifi network at home.
Any idea where I can check that box automatically on boot?

Aug 24, 2010To all those who hit this after installing 11.3: Enable the tapping function of your touch pad by adding Option "TapButton1" "1" to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-synaptics.conf. then restart X (relogin). It will work with all WMs for which SuSE didn't bother to add a GUI config function/utility (xfce, WMaker, twm/fvwm, etc).
To SuSE: WHY? Why is this disabled by default? Why has a system/HW function to be enabled at WM level?? Why only KDE/Gnome?

Jul 26, 2011I have been trying to enable desktop effects but it seems that there's some problem with intel graphics driver. Ubuntu 9.04 and older versions perfectly support desktop effects, everything works great. But with Ubuntu 9.10 and later releases, I am having similar problems.
Ubuntu 11.04 shows this message just after logging in : "It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment." While Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04 and 10.10 shows following message while enabling effects : "Desktop effects could not be enabled." I did lot of searches, tried everything but no luck.

Ubuntu :: Disabled Too Much With Desktop Effects?
Jun 14, 2011I was playing around with my desktop effects and kinda blew it. Not really sure what I did or how to fix it. I was trying to enable some effects and I guess that I hit OK a few too many times and now when I login I no longer have the top tray or the icon menu on the left side. If I hit ALT-F2 nothing happens. I have no idea how to get back into the compiz settings to fix any of this.
If I login under a different account I'm fine, just can't get anything done with my account. Is there a package that I can remove via the command line to simply put everything back?
I'm running Ubuntu 11.04.

Dec 5, 2010Is there anyway to run KDE without Plasma?At install I opted out of the kdebase-workspace package, but then didn't have the xwmconfig option to run KDE.Duplicating, then commenting out the original, and on the uncommented line: removing everything after 'Exec='. Taking the 'plasma.desktop' out. ...Deleting the entire file will only get it rewritten again by the system..Now it loads into beautiful void.I still have my GUI, complete with any kApps you might want: konsole, konqueror, and even krunner; but no panels or Desktop Activities.Is it still loading plasma only no longer implementing it? Am I losing precious RAM'CPU usage with plasma getting loaded without being used?

Feb 19, 2011I was using the latest stable release of Debian, dual-booted alongside Windows Vista, with the GNOME desktop, installed via netinst, trying to build and install a library that I knew and trusted, when suddenly I couldn't open the Root Terminal. I clicked the link (in Applications->Accessories (I think, whatever the top one is)->Root Terminal), and in the taskbar I saw an item that said "Starting Root Terminal". A few seconds later, that went away, but the terminal still wasn't open. I tried the regular user terminal, to see the same thing happen. Unsure of what was happening, I tried restarting my computer, since that's always the first step you should take in computer problems.
When I restarted, GNOME wouldn't start. The screen would flash a bit for a few seconds, then a dialog box would appear over a background of static that said "The greeter application is crashing. Attempting another one...".t would then go back to the DOS-style kernel, wait a second, and then the same thing would happen. After several of that, I would get a blue screen which said something to the effect of "It has been detected that the desktop environment has crashed six times in the past 30 seconds.
Waiting two minutes before trying again." When it did that, I tried logging in as root to assess the problem. I gave it the correct password, but it said that it was an incorrect login. After several tries (to ensure I didn't mistype the password), I logged in as myself. Same problem. I tried the su command, with the correct password, and it said it couldn't authorise it.
After a lengthy conversation with a friend of mine who was very good with computers, he basically summarised that he had no clue, but that his best guess would be a virus. Upon running the Linux installer, I found the Repair option. Not being particularly familiar with Linux, I used it simply to backup my important files onto a flash drive. I then tried running the Install option, in an attempt to simply write over my existing Linux and make it new again. The installer, however, consistently froze up when trying to start the partitioner, on the "Checking disks..." stage. I figured it was a problem with my partition. In my naivete, I simply used the Windows tools to clear that partition... It destroyed GRUB too, so I couldn't run any OS. I figured my computer was pretty well screwed, and at that point just decided to bring it into the shop and have them completely wipe it.
my computer was backed up onto an external hard driven I brought it back, I reinstalled Windows. Upon restart, it said that it was still looking for GRUB, which made no sense to me. After messing around with it a bit, I decided to just reinstall Linux too. To my lack of surprise, that fixed the problem. Both OS' now ran just fine. The first thing I did on Debian was to install the Clam Anti-Virus, which I understood to be one of the best Linux anti-viruses. However, within about 10 hours, got the same problem as originally. I wasn't doing any of the same things, and between the lack of consistency in activities and the fact that I had an anti-virus running,figured it wasn't a virus. Not knowing what to do, I just left it and have been using Windows since.

Mar 10, 2011I here that 11.04 will be shipping with the Unity desktop by default. However, I prefer Gnome. I've seen the recent KDE and Unity interfaces and I don't like them. Right now I'm using Gnome under Ubuntu 10.10. Will there be a Ubuntu 11.04 with the Gnome desktop, which I think will be version 3? If there won't be, will I have to switch to another distro? I quite like Ubuntu.

What I did, in the home folder, I deleted the default user folders (Documents, Desktop, Videos,...) and created a link to to the folders in the User partition. So for Desktop, I created a link to User/Desktop folder, for Documents, I created a link in my home folder to the 'User/My Documents'. What happens now is that all the symlinks I have created appear in my desktop instead of the Desktop items I have in User/Desktop. Any idea how to restore the default desktop folder? I have removed the link to the User/Desktop in my home folder and created a new folder named Desktop and nothing happens.

Mar 25, 2010recently I have been trying to create the perfect custom ubuntu .iso to write to a usb drive so i could carry around a live cd version of my current desktop operating system. I have 2 problems...
1: using various tools like Remastersys, Ubuntu Customization Kit, and Ubuntu's own LiveCDCustomization tutorial I have managed to install most of the packages that I want.... Truecrypt is not in the repos and i would very much like it on my custom live cd. while in chroot i tried using wget to download it then extract and install it, but i got a 404 error so it did not seem to be connecting to the place to download it. is there a workaround to getting truecrypt to install into my extracted squashfs? would it be possible to download the packages to my desktop then copy them over to my chroot squashfs to be installed?
2: I have not been able to customize the default appearance of the desktop environment like the background, icons,colors, window border, panels, applets, and so on.... Ubuntu's tutorial states that I need to edit .xmls in /etc/gconf but i do not understand how to edit those to get what I want. LiveCD creates a new user with default settings everytime it is started so its a matter of editing the files that control the settings of a new user.

Jul 3, 2010I cannot figure out how to make my desktop icons smaller. I know I can right click and "stretch icon", but that only resizes them individually. If I can change the size of them individually,Im thinking I can also, somehow change the default size, of all of them at once.I am currently working on some graphics projects for the observatory and it's easiest to save them to my desktop for now.but they are so big ,that before i know it, they are overlapping each other. stretching them to a smaller size one by one is a time killer.Usually I dont keep icons on my desktop, only the icons for my external drives and the like.
