I've never played with XBMC before and I installed it today on my openSUSE 11.2 64bit system using Yast. I found the package and installed it just fine, but when I try to launch XBMC from the applications menu, the screen flickers once but then nothing happens. Here's the output:

Recently, for whatever reason (I am led to suspect a bad hard drive), Windows 7 failed to boot even in safe mode so I decided to just use a clear hard drive and install a far less troublesome OS, so I decided to try to use openSUSE. I used a backup laptop to download and burn the 4.7 GB release. Problem is, I haven't a clue how to get it to work. I thought just placing the burned DVD in when booting would be enough, but the BIOS keeps telling me it fails to launch from CD. Luckily, I had enough foresight to download a live CD just in case. I was able to install from the live CD, and when I checked the DVD, I was able to access all the content.
But I haven't a clue how to use it to upgrade/install all the extra software. Also, I should add I am completely new to this whole thing. While I have used Linux before, for the most part others dealt with all the administrative aspects of ensuring the system actually ran/had the needed software on it. Finally, I have one major restriction placed on this whole issue. I live out in the middle of no-where and the only internet I can get is limited to 200MB a day (I downloaded the CD/DVD elsewhere, but normally don't have a chance to do that). As such, being able to install from the DVD and not needing to download much software would be nice.
I installed it yesterday. It worked well. I was able to log into windows without any trouble and restart into Ubuntu without a hitch.
This morning I launched Ubuntu as usual vi GRUB. I was asked to install about 135 upgrade files, which went withou an apparent challenges. I then went through the restart and noticed that there was an extra two choices in GRUB, but I just left it to launch Ubuntu automatically. Which it did.
I then messed about with the appearance settings. Noticed a some more updates were waiting which included 49 files. I went through the updating process and restart.
GRUB worked well, and I was soon loggin in with username and password.
The Ubuntu Screen became visible with the flashing horizontal line and about 3 seconds later everything froze. I waited for several minutes - I timed them - but still no progress - everything remained frozen.
I switched off the machine completely, as I knew of no other way to get out of this situation. I rebooted and when GrUB launched I booted into windows 7 with absolutely no problems.
I used restart in windows and then allowed GRUB to boot into Ubuntu. Once more I was able to log in but soon after the Ubuntu Screen appeared and the horizontal line flashed for a few seconds, everything froze. This time I waited five minutes before switching off the machine by disconnecting at the mains.
I am now using windwos 7 to make contact

I am attempting to launch kate via kdesu as well as from the command line and it fails both times. I have (after the first failed attempt) coppied my .kde folder to /root and still am not able to launch it (it works fine under my login). The following is what I get after removing my personal .kde folder from root and launching kate: kate(16689): Session bus not found

I have done a clean install of Lucid netbook remix on a Dell mini-12 laptop.
Finally managed to get the broadcom wireless driver packages and poulsbo drivers to install correctly and decided to install all the offered updates.
After reboot I get the menu bar at the top but then desktop flashes between white and my background image for ages but does not give me the normal netbook tabs etc.
If I try a restart I get a pop-up saying 'Netbook Launcher is not responding'.
I have downloaded wubi.exe to my hard drive. After double clicking the exe and OKing the security dialog, I get a error message box titled: "pyrun.exe - No Disk"The error message reads:"There is no disk in the drive.Please insert a disk into the drive DeviceHarddisk3DR5.There are three buttons: Cancel, Try Again, ContinueClicking any of these buttons simply causes the same message box to pop up over and over. I cannot cancel this message or the process unless I reboot my computer. I guess the latest version of Wubi does not run on Windows 7 Ultimate.My computer:Intel Pentium I76GB RAM1TB Hard Disk
View 4 Replies View RelatedI really don't know what's going on here. I had Ubuntu 10.10 working great, and noticed 11.04 came out. I had been waiting a while and, for some reason, I decided to start with a fresh install rather than an upgrade.So basically here's what I've done so far:
- Installed Ubuntu 11.04 amd64
- Installed Opera, and XSensors
(sensors-detect only detected my GPU and CPU, not mainboard this time. But I can live with that.)
- Activated the FGLRX driver, rebooted.

Basically, the problem is, we have a bunch of computers in a computer lab, that we want to students to access, but not modify in ANY way. That includes backgrounds or whatnot. And after restart, any changes they may have made, change back. Also, they can't have read access to the administrator account on the computer.
This needs to give a permission denied, or something:

The Guest Session is exactly what we are looking for, but try as I might, I can't get it to work. Because, we don't want to have to login as administrators, then activate guest session, just for our students to use the computers. The idea being, we can leave the computers in there, and not worry about the students breaking anything.
One thread I tried was: [URL]. However, using his method, will log the student into the account, and after about 5 seconds, log them back out.

Fresh guest install of current as of changelog dated 16-Feb-2011, in to VirtualBox 4.0.4 (13.1 x86_64 host).
1. About 6 of the icons normally residing in the top half of Settings Manager are missing (names are their and functions work). Selecting 'Appearance -> Icons' and re-selecting the one choice available restores one, the rest remain MIA.
2. Default xfce Terminal launch fails with error <????> Re-selecting the default 'Preferred Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal -> Xfce Terminal' has no effect. 'Properties' shows the usual 'exo-open --launch TerminalEmulator'.
Setting 'Preferred Applications' to 'X Terminal' launches an xterm successfully as expected.
There is no sound when playing avi files in XBMC.The videos play fine & there is sounds in menu.When i switch to Root the movies have sound,so whats wrong here?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo recently I've been trying out openSUSE, along with a few other distros, for use on my HTPC. Previously, I'd been using a hackintosh build, so my external media storage HDDs are all formated HFS+. It was actually surprisingly easy to get openSUSE to mount them for both reading and writing.
Only thing is, XBMC has been pretty unstable on all of the linux distros I've tried, and I'm wondering to what degree the HFS filesystem might be affecting things? It would take a fair bit of juggling -- or going out and buying a new multi-TB HDD -- to clear out the disks in turn so as to reformat them with an ext filesystem, but if that would help me get a more stable HTPC with opensuse -- the linux distro I've settled on -- it'd be worth it. I'll paste a link to the log from an xbmc crash, in case that would be helpful, but really, I'm just curious, since I don't really know all that much about how different filesystems work or anything, how much extra strain does the filesystem translating entail?
I run XBMC 10.1 (packman version) on openSUSE 11.4 x86_64. After a normal package update (zypper up) last weekend, I can't play none of my DVD folders (VIDEO_TS structure) anymore. When selecting a movie to play nothing happens (XBMC log file message "WARNING: could not find codec parameters for /path_to_movie/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO"). AVIs still play fine. have an OpenSuSE 11.4 (Linux 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop) with XBMC (10.1) installed.During installation of SuSE, I've created a user called "xbmc" and enabled autologin for this user. After XBMC have been installed I added the following to /home/xbmc/.xinitrc - "exec /usr/bin/ck-launch-session /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/xbmc --standalone -fs"... so far so good - everything is perfectly fine..... or at least almost - when trying to play some musik I get the message "Failed to initialize audio device, Check your Audio Settings"... but if I close XBMC, log in to Gnome as root, open a terminal an su to user "xbmc" and start xbmc from commandline it works if I choose "Internal Analog Audio" in System -> System -> Audio Output. Now the spooky/funny parts appears... I check the options in Audio Output I see the following:

When returning to auto-login - it stops working again... By the way - to be sure that it wasn't a rights-problem, I ended up changing the UID for the "xbmc"-user to "0" to ensure root-privilegies
With Suse Studio I try to create an appliance that just runs xbmc, with possibly mythtv installed alongside it. No window manager at all, just X + xbmc.I've read the topic "Can I login to xbmc - without the desktop environment?" dated 21-Jun-2009 02:23, but the advices given there suggest introducing a lightweight window manager, like icewm for example.I've read also the article on Opensuse 11.0 - 11.2 - MythTV Official Wikibut there a window manager is installed, too.I have been experimenting with several setups (with icewm, without icewm, Xorg setuid'ed or not) but so far not the result I want, that is: without logging in xbmc starts after power on. Preferably without even showing the grub start up screen, or boot messages. No window manager.

It doesn't launch from the root console, either. But, the text-based YaST works fine. I assume that something went wrong after my last system update. which package I need to downgrade, to get things working, again?
This is a fresh install of 11.2 KDE-4.3.1.
After reviewing all of the 11.2 Milestone 64-bit DVDs, Milestone 1 - 8 - I was always able to launch Firefox from Thunderbird in search of add-ons or an html link.
It stopped working in RC1, RC2.
I thought this was resolved for openSUSE 11.2. The problem still exists!
Now, thinking the problem was with Thunderbird 3.0.4b. I navigated to Configure Desktop --> Personal Settings --> General --> Default Applications:
Changed Email Client from KMail to Thunderbird
From within KMail I can launch Firefox. However, Thunderbird 3.0.4b does NOT launch Konqueror nor Firefox 3.5.4 !!
In addition the Thunderbird 3.04b Help does NOT work.
Could the setting of Default Applications be broken in KDE-4.3.1 " release 6 " ??
I'm sure I cannot be the only one experiencing this at home???
After I installed luckyBackup, two icons were added to the 'More applications' window. The first one launches luckyBackup and works fine. The second one is called 'luckyBackup (super user mode' and is supposed to launch luckyBackup with root privileges. However nothing happens when I click on it. I see that the associated command is 'su-to-root -X -c /usr/bin/luckyBackup'. Typing that command in a shell results in an error as su-to-root does not exist. So... is this syntax ('su-to-root -X -c /usr/bin/luckyBackup') supposed to work, or shall I edit it (how?) in order to be able to launch the application as root?
View 4 Replies View RelatedNormally I install Xfce during installation time, but I deceided to try and add it to a machine 'after the fact.' This is on an OS11.2 machine with KDE as the primary DE.
When I select Xfce as the session I am receiving an error about: 'Unable to load failsafe session.'
xconfd is not running (D-Bus problem) or environment variable $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS is missing /etc or xcfe-session is not installed.
Before I go investing time to sort this out, is there a simple fix that people have used to correct the problem.
I've never really bothered about installing themes etc., to KDE and I've always just used the standard KDE setup so I am a bit of a newbie when it comes themes. But I was out the other day with a mate and he had got his Macbook and I quite liked the Bottom of the screen quick launch bar they have. Is there a program or widget I can install to KDE 4.4.4. So I can have a Mac style quick launch bar? And hopefully something that wont use to many system resources.

This has probably been asked about before.... I would like to start apps in desktop 2, 3 and 4. To start apps during boot, I use two different methods: The .xinitrc file in /home/dan works fine under: "Add your own lines here..." Startup Applications in Gnome | System works well as well. Here, I can enter nautilus /dir and nautilus starts up just fine in that directory. But as I mentioned, I have yet to find a way to direct the program to run in a different desktop other than #1.

I can't launch kwrite from the cli as root. What am I supposed to use? I installed midnight commander but it can't cut and paste correctly. I am feeling a bit frustrated with KDE 4.4.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIn these days I was doing some experiments: creating rpms of different programs by compiling directly the source code. Everything went well, every-time I was able to create a rpm and install it correctly, no errors no issues. Unfortunately I was not able to find the way to create in the menu (application tab) any quick launch icon. I was forced always to use the terminal and digit the correspondent command :wxmaxima,gnuplot, etc. I tried to look in the manuals but there wasn't anything useful.
By the way I am using Opensuse 11.3 and KDE 4.4.4.
I have encountered a problem with an XFCE Launch Error. Upon first login, if I double click any Thunar related icon or try to launch Thunar from the menu, it will take 20-30 seconds to start. At first it was giving me the following Launch Error: "The folder could not be opened. Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." After successive reboots, I no longer get the Launch Error, but it still takes 20-30 seconds to start Thunar.
This is a new install of OpenSUSE and I did updates. The first two updates I did were required by the update software itself. After that was complete I updated the rest of the recommended packages. I then installed gnome-control-center to get gnome-display-properties so I can adjust my login screen settings. Those are all the updates I have done.
I have poured over other threads about the aforementioned Launch Error, and it seems possible that it is related to message bus security policy or gtk2 settings somewhere.
Is there a way to log XFCE errors or message bus errors to a file for troubleshooting? I would like to find out why and where this is happening.
openSUSE 11.2, just installed. When I start the "Root Terminal", I get this error message: Could not launch 'Root Terminal' Failed to execute child process "gksu" (No such file or directory) This error message doesn't mean enough to me to know what I need to do.

Now I'd like to launch a script whenever I log out from my account. I'd like that, each time I log out from my account for instance to let someone else work with my computer on his own account, a script is automatically launched. I know how to launch a script when logging IN but not when logging out.
