There is no sound when playing avi files in XBMC.The videos play fine & there is sounds in menu.When i switch to Root the movies have sound,so whats wrong here?

I am new to this forum and have recently switched to Ubuntu. The OS installed without a hitch and was able to get video card, wireless internet installed with relative ease. However, I have encountered a problem installing my E-mu 0404 PCI sound card via the ALSA packages in Synaptic.
Code: 04:03.0 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Creative Labs SB0400 Audigy2 Value [1102:0008] As you can see once the packages were installed the OS could see the hardware ok, but when I tried playing a standard MP3 file (16 bit, 44.1khz, 192kbps) in Totem it started playing the file back around 15-20% faster than normal? To me it sounds as if the software is playing the audio back at higher sample rate than 44.1khz hence the faster speed, though I'm not 100% on that.
The next thing I tried was playing the same file back in VLC and it was exactly the same (15-20% too fast), but this time it was horrible and glitchy as well, almost as if the audio buffer size was set to small. The same thing happened when I tried playing back some flac and wav files (all 16 bit, 44.1khz) also. I have searched google (and read the comprehensive sound card guide on this forum) and read several forums, guides, etc. for anybody posting the same issue with this particular card but could find nothing. From all reports I've read this card should work fine under ALSA. For the record I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit kernel running on a Dell Dimension 9200 (Intel Core2Duo E6400 2.13ghz) with 2GB RAM.
the flac decoder in 11.1 Amarok Playing my CD rips (flac) in Amarok has issues with something like skips. little short dropouts in the sound. Using Suse 10.3 (still on the box) does not have this issue. System: Suse 11.1, KDE 3.5 recent install and update. 32 bit on 32 bit platform, old Athlon 2500+ Asus MB, 1 GB ram, two 120 GB internal, Audigy SC.

My VLC used to play FLV files... but for some reason it stopped being able to play it. I can sort of play it with MPLAYER; but I preffer to use VLC.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have just installed 11.4 64bit and duly followed the sticky guide for getting the required multimedia files installed. I find I have a problem with playing audio cd's the only program which will play an audio cd is Kaffeine but it does not play properly - it plays a few bars then silence, plays a few bars then silence and I can find no way of getting it to play without interruption. There are no sound problems with Kaffene when using it to play digital tv or dvd films. I have tried KsCD, Amarok, Mplayer, SMPlayer, and GNOME MPlayer none of which can I get to play a CD. With Amarok there does not appear to be a setting to play a CD as soon as it is put in the drive it would appear that you have to generate a playlist first, I can show the list of tunes on the CD but that's a far as it goes they will not add to a playlist or play.
Have just found the player Clementine which apparently is based on Amarok. Although not providing a direct play facility I was able to load the cd to the playlist then play the tunes. This may be a clue to my problems in that I noticed that it had to mount the player first. Is there a setting for auto mounting?Ideally I would like to put an audio cd in my player and have it play automatically without me having to do anything. Is this facility available in 11.4 and if so which program do I need to install?
this problem is quiet enoying, so i hope that somebody can help me tracking down this problem and find a solution. When i open vlc or exaile and queue a list of tracks, after playing some hours, the sound hangs and in the music player repeats the same 1 second audio part like a hickup, in video programs like vlc also the film freezes.
i have the latest libraries of gstreamer from packman installed and i also tried updating the pulseaudio libraries from multimedia repo. but the problem is still the same
but after a forum search I only found one similar thread, but seemingly the issue was not totally solved. I just would like to suggest a solution (well, most likely a workaround) for .rmvb Real Player movies which don't work well on Kaffeine, without need to install other players or applications.I first saw many people had similar problems as me: Real Player movies just played sound but not video, or viceversa. I first tried installing w32 codecs, but this seems to be the good solution for 32 bit users, I use 11.3 x64 and didn't work for me. Seems to be a Medibuntu repository, and I looked for a .tar file, since I was looking for a "w64" version of the codecs. I downloaded the latest .tar.gz file found on the page, the 20071007 one and uncompressed it. It has some codec files and a Readme which tells where to put the files. After that done, without rebooting Suse, I tried again to play the movie, and Kaffeine finally played it well, although now it pops a message saying Kaffeine closed unproperly whenever I close it after having played a .rmvb movie. I think that can be solved by updating Kaffeine, but haven't tried that yet
I am using open suse 11.4, and have been trying to play video files from a web site, but when I click on the play link all that happens is that it goes to the page where the video should be but it doesn't load or play, not sure if it is a flash or java problem. the file plays without problem in Ubuntu 10.10 and also Win 7. it is a video file from [URL].
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have just installed openSuse 11.2 (64bit), and I installed the avi codecs as described in Restricted Formats/11.2 - openSUSE-Community with the 1-click installation for KDE. But kaffeine and xine are crashing when I try to play avi files.One thing I found out is that all packages are 64 bit packages only the w32codec-all version is 20071007-0.pm.1.1-i586 and I don't get offered a _64 package. Is this OK? What else could be the problem
View 4 Replies View RelatedAlright, the lifehacker article about this Acer machine got me interested in revisiting XBMC as a media center. I bought the AR1600-U910H from Newegg and have been struggling for a couple of weeks to get it working correctly. I opted to install a full Ubuntu desktop to utilize the hardware fully with a standalone version of XBMC. I am currently running Lucid with NVIDIA 256.25 (was running 195 series) driver. Switched to 256 because I heard it fixes the no multi-channel output problem. However, sadly I can't get multi-channel out to work. I have the HDMI output going through my Onkyo TX-SR608 receiver for both audio and video. My problem is I can only get stereo sound out while running XBMC (or any application for that matter).
I've upgraded Alsa to 1.0.23. I've installed new Beta 256.25 NVIDIA driver. I've configured Alsa about 28 different times. I'm at my wits end. So, my question is - does anybody having a similar setup with the ION chip (or the Acer Aspire Revo in particular) where they can succesfully get HDMI digital audio pass through to a receiver (or at least digital multi channel out)? The best I've gotten is 2 channel audio, which doesn't do a lot of good on a 5.1 setup. If I would have known getting multichannel audio would be so difficult I would have rethought starting this endeavor. I don't care if I have to do a fresh reinstall of everything - if that means a different version Ubuntu so be it.
I've been trying for a day to get sounds working on my HTPC which is running Ubuntu Server (Natty) and XBMC from the repositories. I have so far had no luck, with not so much as a peep on any channel - analog, optical or over HDMI.
My setup is a ASUS AT3IONT-I with an Intel Atom CPU. I think this is a common configuration which should not require any special treatment, and I also have a friend with the same hardware and no problems running XBMC on OpenSUSE.
XBMC is installed according to the instructions here [URL] with a user named xbmc etc. It works wonderfully in every aspect except that the sound is missing alltogether.
I've been following [URL] for troubleshooting but have now run out of ideas, which is why I'm asking you.

With a default 11.4 (64bit) installation, and the one click installer for VLC at VideoLAN - VLC: Free streaming and multimedia solutions for all OS! - if you get a black screen when watching movie files there are 2 solutions.1)-> Go to Tools->Preferences->Video-> Remove the tick for "Accelerated video output (Overlay)"-> Try and play the movie again, you should now see output.2)Download proprietary drivers for your graphics card - I think theres a thread on the forum dedicated to that.
Example, NVIDIA 8600 using the default 11.4 open source drivers (nouveau?) shows a black screen when VLC uses "Accelerated video output".However, installing the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, VLC will successfully show the movie using "Accelerated video output".To clarify the default VLC installation with "Accelerated video output" ticked - works with proprietary NVIDIA drivers - and doesn't without.
I am having problems: videos have sound, but no picture.I'm using a Gigabyte motherboard with integrated ATI video, and I've read before that XBMC (and Ubuntu in general) don't like ATI too much. Is there any hope left to make XBMC work?I've tried the following:1. Fresh Ubuntu installation, default ATI drivers. Result: when starting a video, audio is okay, but no video. Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

I am at the end of my tether in trying to get sound setup on my Ubuntu installation. I have tried many different 'fixes' that people have suggested, but none seem to work!
My setup is as follows:
> HP Proliant Microserver
> Ubuntu 10.10
> Zotac GT210 card
> HDMI from GFX card to AV amp
> 5GB Ram
What I want to be able to do is:
> Play music from FLAC files I have ripped in either stereo or sudo 5.1
> Play DVD iso files that I have ripped in the audio format found on the original discs (DTS etc)
I have managed to get sound working before, but only in stereo and I couldn't get it working in XBMC (not the sound from the main movie I chose anyway). I have since completely broken the sound after trying various things found on the interweb and cannot get it back.

thought I'd take the plunge and use it as the OS for a new HTPS running XBMC. I installed a second 1TB HDD to use as a media tank that I formatted to NTFS. All is well except I cannot get XBMC to see the second drive. Its mounted and I can access it no worries, but when I go into Videos,> add source, > i'm given the home folder and my network as options, neither of which have the second drive on them. (my windows network can see the second drive but it doesn't appear as an option in XBMC

It seems I can play at least an mpeg movie, and mp3. But I find the quality of sound of the mp3 in kaffeine very poor. Yes, it plays, but some mp3's are struggling the first 10 seconds or so,, eg, Shivers - Armin van Buuren. When I play the same mp3 in xmms, it plays like a charm. That's not what I want, I want an all-round multimedia player. Xine does the job very well,, like xmms,, and plays also the mpeg, but unfortunately, xine shows an error message about a segmentation fault, upon exiting xine. Any hint to play mp3 files in kaffeine like xmms does?
I recently bought a new laptop. compaq presario CQ41 109AU. It does not come with a pre-installed OS so i've decided to put an Ubuntu on it[karmic koala 9.10]. I successfully completed the installation procedures. however, it does not produce sound when loggin in and playing music files. I gone to look if the settings where put to mute, but they were not. I tried installing a MS Vista in the other partition and the sound worked.

Other players such as vlc or mplayer work just fine.If I go under the mixer, I get "no application is currently playing or recording audio" under the "Applications" tab when playing through mpd. In contrast, when I'm using mplayer or vlc, both show up in that tab. It behaves as though pulse is simply not configured to work with mpd.

The problem is that I have no sound when playing DVDs. Everything else works fine. I installed libdvdcss (followed this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...ts/PlayingDVDs) but still no sound on DVDs (the DVD works fine on a windows machine).
I have an Acer Aspire One with Karmic Koala.
When I start my computer, my comp is set to require password everytime I start the computer. I am using Karmic with all the latest updates. One day, from the Login Screen itself, I selected the Power icon at the bottom right and selected Shut Down. But, from next boot, the login drum sound wouldnt play and even the african sound that comes after logging in wouldn't play. The african sound problem was solved when I noticed that my sound was muted by the GDM on shutdown. However, the drum sound still does not come. I think the solution it to change the volume before logging in.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've installed kubuntu 10.04 recently. I'm following the guide at [URL] to set-up the system. I've installed the kubuntu-restricted-extras package however I do not get any sound while playing mp3s. The sound system is working as I get the kde tune when I start up. I have tried playing mp3s in amarok, audacious, kaffeine and vlc. None of them work.
I opened system settings -> multimedia. It shows four devices and only the one which says 'ALC883(analog)' works in all categories (notifications, music, video, etc etc) when I click test. However sometimes I get a notification saying that the device doesn't work.
Another thing I noticed was that the mp3s play when Dolphin shows a preview of the file when it is selected. I mean that there is a preview part in the right hand part of the window. When I press play there, the mp3s play. But there is no sound when I play movies and mp3s in amarok, audacious, vlc or kaffeine
The motherboard I'm using is Gigabyte M61PME-S2P. Its an nForce 430 motherboard with integrated graphics and sound.

I just installed openSUSE 11.2. When I had installed it, I could play music from ..... and others, but no mp3-files. Because of that I followed the steps described in this thread: Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums When I finished that, I still couldn't play my mp3-files and couldn't even play music from ..... anymore.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently switched to Ubuntu 9.10 from Fedora 12 because it was giving me problems, but now I've run into some problems with Ubuntu. I really only use my computer for internet and music, and I'm not really able to listen to my music.My computer is an HP Pavillion dv7-3060US laptop, AMD 64bit processor, 4gb ram, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 graphics chip and an ATI chipset (not sure which).
I have an altec lansing speaker configuration, with a built in subwoofer on the bottom. My problem comes that the sound is coming out of the subwoofer, not the actual speakers themself. When I try plugging in an external set of speakers, nothing happens, the sound still plays. Switching the device from "Interal audio analog stereo" to the other choices in my list does nothing (system>preferences>sound is the list im talking about)I'm able to hear music through my subwoofer when using totem music player, but neither rhythmbox nor amarok play any music. amarok doesn't play at all, and rhythm box shows the music is loaded but no sound comes out and it looks like its playing it at 2x speed.
I've attempted to follow the comprehensive audio problems guide here but I get to step 3 and the website isnt the same, so I can't continue.These are the outputs from the first few steps:

This is true for .flv, .avi, .mov, and .mp4, at least. This is true in both vlc and movie player. Thumbnails generated from frames in the videos appear correctly in nautilus. Videos play fine in firefox, on ....., but I downloaded one as an .flv and then it had the same problem. I have restricted extras freshly installed. My "Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala" system is fully updated. I've found several other forum posts about the same kind of problem, but I couldn't find anything helpful in them (like that the contrast setting might be WAY out of whack, which it wasn't, or that nvidia drivers needed to be updated or reinstalled, which I don't have anyway, etc).
