OpenSUSE :: Creating A "xbmc-only" System?

With Suse Studio I try to create an appliance that just runs xbmc, with possibly mythtv installed alongside it. No window manager at all, just X + xbmc.I've read the topic "Can I login to xbmc - without the desktop environment?" dated 21-Jun-2009 02:23, but the advices given there suggest introducing a lightweight window manager, like icewm for example.I've read also the article on Opensuse 11.0 - 11.2 - MythTV Official Wikibut there a window manager is installed, too.I have been experimenting with several setups (with icewm, without icewm, Xorg setuid'ed or not) but so far not the result I want, that is: without logging in xbmc starts after power on. Preferably without even showing the grub start up screen, or boot messages. No window manager.

I've bought myself an Acer Revo and have 10.04 running nicely on it. After some basic tweaks I have 1080p content playing flawlessly.However, I'd like the system to boot directly into xbmc (no gdm etc). Can anyone suggest how this might be achieved?Under 9.10 I used a minimal install and edited /etc/event.d/tty1 to login a user. .bash_profile was then edited to start xbmc.

I installed the Grooveshark add-on on XBMC (downloaded from their official PPA). When I fire it up (choose it and press Enter/Return/Newline) XBMC freezes. I had to get out of it by doing Ctrl-Alt-F1, logging in and rebooting.

Early in the boot process, system generates message "Creating nodes with udev." After a pause, CPU timeout dumps are listed on the display. Likely it is related to wthe display driver (Intel 845G) as the system can be brought up in failsafe mode. /etc/X11.conf is intact. The system was apparently successfully upgraded online from 11.3 using the zypper method. This issue has appeared a day following the upgrade, after restarting the 11.4 system.

I've never played with XBMC before and I installed it today on my openSUSE 11.2 64bit system using Yast. I found the package and installed it just fine, but when I try to launch XBMC from the applications menu, the screen flickers once but then nothing happens. Here's the output:

There is no sound when playing avi files in XBMC.The videos play fine & there is sounds in menu.When i switch to Root the movies have sound,so whats wrong here?

So recently I've been trying out openSUSE, along with a few other distros, for use on my HTPC. Previously, I'd been using a hackintosh build, so my external media storage HDDs are all formated HFS+. It was actually surprisingly easy to get openSUSE to mount them for both reading and writing.
Only thing is, XBMC has been pretty unstable on all of the linux distros I've tried, and I'm wondering to what degree the HFS filesystem might be affecting things? It would take a fair bit of juggling -- or going out and buying a new multi-TB HDD -- to clear out the disks in turn so as to reformat them with an ext filesystem, but if that would help me get a more stable HTPC with opensuse -- the linux distro I've settled on -- it'd be worth it. I'll paste a link to the log from an xbmc crash, in case that would be helpful, but really, I'm just curious, since I don't really know all that much about how different filesystems work or anything, how much extra strain does the filesystem translating entail?

I run XBMC 10.1 (packman version) on openSUSE 11.4 x86_64. After a normal package update (zypper up) last weekend, I can't play none of my DVD folders (VIDEO_TS structure) anymore. When selecting a movie to play nothing happens (XBMC log file message "WARNING: could not find codec parameters for /path_to_movie/VIDEO_TS/VIDEO_TS.IFO"). AVIs still play fine. I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.
"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system"
Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).

have an OpenSuSE 11.4 (Linux 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop) with XBMC (10.1) installed.During installation of SuSE, I've created a user called "xbmc" and enabled autologin for this user. After XBMC have been installed I added the following to /home/xbmc/.xinitrc - "exec /usr/bin/ck-launch-session /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/xbmc --standalone -fs"... so far so good - everything is perfectly fine..... or at least almost - when trying to play some musik I get the message "Failed to initialize audio device, Check your Audio Settings"... but if I close XBMC, log in to Gnome as root, open a terminal an su to user "xbmc" and start xbmc from commandline it works if I choose "Internal Analog Audio" in System -> System -> Audio Output. Now the spooky/funny parts appears... I check the options in Audio Output I see the following:
With Autologin:
Defaults
iec958
hdmi
HDA Intel Defaults
[code]...
When returning to auto-login - it stops working again... By the way - to be sure that it wasn't a rights-problem, I ended up changing the UID for the "xbmc"-user to "0" to ensure root-privilegies

I want to make a Dual Boot system completely made out of Linux. The two OS will be Fedora 15 (Gnome) and Ubuntu 11.04 (as i love the simplicity of Gnome). The question that has been striking me for quite sometime is not that if I can have both of them on a single computer but that if both of them can have a single Linux-Swap and home drive with separate root drives. Root drives for Ubuntu 11.04 might be around 10GB while that for Fedora 15 will be 20GB with 5GB of Linux-Swap (a single swap drive for both the OS) and if possible a 20GB space for the home folder common for both the OS.

I need some help creating a triple boot system, I have already installed XP and W7, now I am installing Fedora 12 (this is for work so unfortunately it has to be like that). Now the problem is that I want it to show all the partitions in GRUB. Right now it works by going to GRUB first, when selecting Windows it jumps to the Win7 boot manager.
I tried to have them all in one but it seems like the addresses I used in GRUB did not work cause it keeps directing me to the Win7 BM. BTW I am using a single drive with 3 different logical partitions.

I had problems with my old Ubuntu version,so I decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. As I wanted to keep my old files I didn't choose the erase the hard disk and install option so the installation system created automatically another partition.
Now that I've installed it I want to delete my old Ubuntu version AND keep my old files, or at least the most important ones (videogames saved games, openoffice documents, music and video). BUT there's one big problem, I can't start the old partition, if I try to run it it runs OK except that I don't see anything in the screen (yes, I listen to the Ubuntu start sound and so, but can't see anything). It happend before, that's why I changed it.

My chief file server (Dell PE R300) died last week with a disk error, and because it serves the /usr/local and /home partitions via NFS to my ~60 desktops, nobody could do any work until I managed to rig up another server and pull data off the backups. I'm using RHEL 4.To avoid this in future my plan is to knock up a dual server solution with DRDB and Heartbeat.In the meantime, is there a better way to allow desktop users to carry on working as normal, without relying on the file server too much? i.e. something better than NFS but not LDAP (I don't want to implement this just yet as the organisation as a whole may do this in the future)? My users need to be able to access the same home area on any linux desktop managed by me.Also, to implement DRDB/Heartbeat, it might be best to have the home areas on an external array, is that right? Can anybody recommend some hardware?

I am at my own desktop and I have root access on my own desktop.
I also have root access on a Desktop Ubuntu system (192.168.5.10) on the LAN. I need to create another desktop user account on that 192.168.5.10 system.
So I logged into that system with: ssh -Y myself@192.168.5.10
Then I did: sudo users-admin
This brings up the Users Settings but the Add User and Unlock buttons are disabled. How do I enable these buttons?

Installed Ubuntu 10.10 and it works very well except I cant format cd or dvds. I am using the disk utility program in administration and keep getting the following error:
Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sr0: Input/output error
I have tried mounting and unmounting - makes no difference.

I have a box that's used as an SFTP server. All users have restricted shell so they can only use SFTP to send and receive files. But it makes it hard to have them change their passwords. I thought that if we had a web page set up where the user could enter their username, old password, new password and confirmed new password, that this would be the easiest solution.

I have a system built and running in exactly the basic configuration I want, with my recompiled kernel, extra packages, special drivers, everything works, life is good. What I want to do is take this exact setup and create an image I can copy onto a bootable USB stick. Is there a way to essentially take the contents of my hard drive and copy that onto a USB stick and then boot directly from that? The use case behind this is that I am building an embedded system of which I may have hundreds of boxes with identical hardware and software configurations. Instead of hard drives, I am going to use USB sticks for cost efficiency and maintenance. My idea is that when it's time to upgrade, I could just image a hundred new sticks and go out and swap them.
My issue is that a standard LiveCD install gets me maybe 25% of the way to a finished system. I need to recompile the kernel for realtime support with my CPU, add some fidgety drivers for some specific hardware, and install a whole bunch of additional packages. I suppose I could create a makefile(s) to replicate all the manual steps of the buildout but that seems like a lot of unnecessary complexity IF I can just image that running system as it is.

I downloaded the ISO from the Ubuntu site. I can run it from the CD without any problems however, when I install it, it freezes. I am installing on a 2nd hard drive in my computer. It gets up to the point of "Creating ext4 file system for / in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,1,0)(sdb)... I've tried deleting the partition and creating one by myself with no prevail. I am going to school for computer networking and my counselor told me that it'd be a good idea to learn the Linux OS for my major.

I need an application which will create DVD for me, and I am pretty lame in these things. I have nasty sony home theater which does play only DVDs from shop and I cannot play anything I record (so far).
So, my problem is: I have MPEG video file (mp4), and I want to make DVD format with all that AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders and files in it, which will record me a DVD which will play on my DVD player. To be simple as possible, something like: MPEG_file -> CLICK -> DVD ready
Even better: MPEG_FILE+SUBTITLE FILE -> CLICK -> DVD ready...

My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3
