View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter I installed luckyBackup, two icons were added to the 'More applications' window. The first one launches luckyBackup and works fine. The second one is called 'luckyBackup (super user mode' and is supposed to launch luckyBackup with root privileges. However nothing happens when I click on it. I see that the associated command is 'su-to-root -X -c /usr/bin/luckyBackup'. Typing that command in a shell results in an error as su-to-root does not exist. So... is this syntax ('su-to-root -X -c /usr/bin/luckyBackup') supposed to work, or shall I edit it (how?) in order to be able to launch the application as root?

I can't launch kwrite from the cli as root. What am I supposed to use? I installed midnight commander but it can't cut and paste correctly. I am feeling a bit frustrated with KDE 4.4.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a favorite REXX program called fv2. When I was a Windows user I had an icon for fv2 on the Quick Launch bar. Click that icon, and the program ran. Now, as a Linux (Ubuntu) user it is necessary to go through several steps to run fv2.
1) Launch a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon at the top of the screen. What's that area called? The GNOME panel?
2) Enter: ~/Desktop/RexxScripts
3) Enter: regina fv2
I run fv2 several times per day and would really like to have the convenience of a clickable icon.
I know how to launch a script whenever I turn off my computer; I just have to add it in the file /etc/halt.local. Such a script is launched just before the computer stops. Now I'd like to launch a script whenever I log out from my account. I'd like that, each time I log out from my account for instance to let someone else work with my computer on his own account, a script is automatically launched. I know how to launch a script when logging IN but not when logging out.

I installed Crossover Office Pro (full release) which I used on previous version of opensuse, but now it is installed on opensuse 11.4 64 bits. The installation is fine, but the problems begin when I try to launch the application to install windows software.

Recently, for whatever reason (I am led to suspect a bad hard drive), Windows 7 failed to boot even in safe mode so I decided to just use a clear hard drive and install a far less troublesome OS, so I decided to try to use openSUSE. I used a backup laptop to download and burn the 4.7 GB release. Problem is, I haven't a clue how to get it to work. I thought just placing the burned DVD in when booting would be enough, but the BIOS keeps telling me it fails to launch from CD. Luckily, I had enough foresight to download a live CD just in case. I was able to install from the live CD, and when I checked the DVD, I was able to access all the content.
But I haven't a clue how to use it to upgrade/install all the extra software. Also, I should add I am completely new to this whole thing. While I have used Linux before, for the most part others dealt with all the administrative aspects of ensuring the system actually ran/had the needed software on it. Finally, I have one major restriction placed on this whole issue. I live out in the middle of no-where and the only internet I can get is limited to 200MB a day (I downloaded the CD/DVD elsewhere, but normally don't have a chance to do that). As such, being able to install from the DVD and not needing to download much software would be nice.
Since I installed MS2 I messed up grub. Finally I got 11.3 back to its old glory.
What would be the best procedure to create a backup image with all settings and permissions ...just in case ?
i am having problems with privileges i have created a new user with my name, but i cant get root privileges on it. i need the same privileges as the root profile.

I have a copy of Shake (I was given it by my friend) It is the Linux version and I have followed instructions to install and after a few problems and errors I think I have everything in place. However when I type the advised command from Terminal: 'csh Shake' All that happens is the terminal moves to a new line with no text. I can still type and press enter but nothing happens, just goes to a new blank line. Thing is it doesn't give any errors. I cannot launch gnome-terminal from the Applications -> System Tools -> Terminal menu. However a gnome-terminal process is created (I can see it in a terminal that I happened to have open) but it doesn't seem to actually run (I have several of these terminals in the ps list now but they haven't actually run as terminals and it's been at least 2 hrs). At first I thought they weren't running at all until I checked (it looked like the Starting Terminal message at the bottom of the gnome GUI ran abnormally long and then terminated so I thought at first that they weren't running at all).
Also it looks like my gnome session is clobbering the CPU: running at or over 80% of cpu time at times (it does change but mostly it is high). All I'm doing is minor web work + updating a file in Open Office - when I noticed this I got out of Open Office and that had no effect. So it looks like application software is running (this was launched from a terminal) but running from the menu seems to result in processes with low priority (that doesn't seem right though). This just started today and my system has been mostly running correctly for a year or so (last year I got an Acer 5532 on sale, wiped it and installed Fedora 11).
I am a total linux n00b and am having trouble with scripts. I am taking a basic linux class and I have to write a script with input and output, and it must have branching (a loop or if statement). In any case, I have decided to write a script (hopefully) that will ask the user what the base and height of their triangle is, and then my script will calculate the area for the user.
