View 3 RepliesI am writing a TCP server in C, and the server listens to incoming client connections and accepts them. It then creates a thread to handle the client. The clients are expected to only receive data from my server and not send any data. So if I use a select() call with a recv(), I believe that the recv() will just block forever since there will not be any data coming from the client. If I use a non-blocking recv(), then this will just return a 0 which tells me nothing because the client is not expected to send any data. I am not sure if I have misunderstood some socket concepts, but I need a solution to detect when the client has disconnected so that I can close the socket and stop sending data to the client. As I understand it, simple ACKs etc are not captured by the recv(), and only data sent by the client will cause recv() to return a non-zero value, so I am not sure how to know when the client has disconnected.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have to implement a client/server solution that pretty much does this:
1) Client broadcasts UDP packet;
2) client receives answer packet from multiple servers - it includes the TCP port to use next and a list of files;
3) user picks file from list;
4) client downloads from server via TCP.
I got the client to broadcast and the servers reply. However, i'm not yet getting the client to be able to receive multiple packets.
I'm very inclined and have tried to implement select, but most examples i find are for stream sockets. Once the fsSet shows a read event would i create a new socket or just use the main socket for recvfrom()ing? I assume i need at least two sockets. However i'm not sure if this will allow the client to actually receive simultaneously... so i'm kinda not wanting to guess that this implies fork and threads... Also, i assume the socket must be nonblocking (done), although i've read somewhere select would take care of this?

The sort program is then sorting the contents of the file and sending it to another programm called less. Less is paging the results so that you can see one page of the results at a time.I know that i can solve the problem this way:
1. Create a server program that will stream the contents of a file to any client that connects to it
2. Create a client application that will connect to the server and download the contents of the file. The program should then sort the file. After sorting the file the client should connect to the "less" program and send the sorted results
3. Create a server program that will listen for connections and download whatever is sent to it. It will then display that data one page at a time.
I have an ubuntu 7.10 ICS server that works fine and I have routed my traffic using firestarter to my windows PC. my server's IP is 192.168.0.1 and my windows client is 192.168.0.2. now, I have bought another PC and I want to assign 192.168.0.3 to it and connect it to ubuntu server. in windows, all I needed to do was to connect the first client to first network card, second one to second network card, bridge two connections in my server, assign 192.168.0.1 to the network bridge in my server and 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 to my clients, then share my internet connection. I also could access shared files in any computer from all of them. can I have the same functionality with a linux server?
I'll make a list to make it easy if you don't wanna read the whole post:
things I want:
1. assign one ip address to multiple interfaces in linux, making them bonded.
2. sharing the internet connection with both clients.
3. ability to use all shared files over a network.

I have a CentOS + Samba server and Windows XP client machines. Users, passwords and permissions are entered on the server machine.users and passwords ( same as on the server ) are entered in the XP client machine.When attempting to access a public file on the server using a XP client machine and the IP address of my server, I am asked a user name and password and none of the already entered seem to work. I have some feeling that its because the program has no access to the memory containing the shellcode (May be???)..
i have two doubts
1) i downloaded the latest linux kernel in hope that i will find the codes for the operating system the os but i cant locate any.so can any0ne tell me from where can i find what i am looking for?
2) c language used in the package i downloaded is though very close to the c i studied but there are places where it becomes tough for to comprehend the real significance of the lines. eg i never knew rhere is Display() a pre-defined function but i saw it somewhere as predefined.

My program is, I can't compile this program using gcc, and I can't find something like pgcc in ubuntu. How should I compile this program? After compiling, what should I do to run this program? Can I use something like mpirun to run it? I want to try to use both cores of my computer to run it and make it shows Node 1 also besides Node0.
