i connect to the internet via my nokia 7230 as a modem.i am quite satisfied with the speed i get(around 40KB/s). yesterday i could share the internet connection wi-fi between XP host and ubuntu guest. i just can't figure out how to do this with ubuntu host and XP guest.i am able to create a wireless network...and my XP also connects to that. but the problem comes with the internet sharing part. also i wanted to know, what is the option "Auto-eth0" under wired connection in network settings.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an ubuntu 7.10 ICS server that works fine and I have routed my traffic using firestarter to my windows PC. my server's IP is 192.168.0.1 and my windows client is 192.168.0.2. now, I have bought another PC and I want to assign 192.168.0.3 to it and connect it to ubuntu server. in windows, all I needed to do was to connect the first client to first network card, second one to second network card, bridge two connections in my server, assign 192.168.0.1 to the network bridge in my server and 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 to my clients, then share my internet connection. I also could access shared files in any computer from all of them. can I have the same functionality with a linux server?

things I want:
1. assign one ip address to multiple interfaces in linux, making them bonded.
2. sharing the internet connection with both clients.
3. ability to use all shared files over a network.

I want to share this connection to my desktop running Ubuntu 9.10 via an direct ethernet cable connection. So far in Windows I checked the "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" in the Wireless Network Connection Properties menu. I have an Ethernet hub, and want two computers (both notebooks) to share my internet connection. One is running Ubuntu 9.10 and the other is running Windows Vista. I want both computers to be able to connect to the internet (I use a cable modem).
However, when I plug both computers in, I am able to get only one of them working at one time. When Ubuntu works with the internet, Windows does not work (although it sees the internet connection). When Windows works, Ubuntu sees the connection, but cannot connect.
Just took the plunge and removed Windows 7 from my desktop rig and I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04
I was using this PC to share my Internet (DSL) connection to any and all other PC's on my network, wired and wireless, and I am attempting to set this up in Ubuntu.
My desktop, other wired PC's, a wireless AP and my DSL modem are all connected to a 8 port Ethernet switch and I was using ICS in Windows 7 to share my Internet connection once I established the connection from my desktop.
Can this be done in Ubuntu? As soon as I make the DSL connection it says that Auto eth0 disconnects (which I set to share to all in IPv4 settings which I read on the forum is the way to share)... thus nothing is currently shared :/
In this document it states that the sharing computer needs two network interfaces... but in Windows I only used the one...

View 2 Replies View Relatedi have an evdo connection with which i connect to the internet. i have been trying to share this connection for quite a few days from my lucid machine to a windows 7 pc but have failed. i have tried dhcp3-server, firestarter, network manager's built in capabilities but have failed! today i manually configured da windows 7 pc to an ip address within da range which network manager ws assigning when 'shared to other computers' ws selected and it worked! Now da question is how do i do it automatically? dhcp3-server never starts, it always fails with the error 'not configured to listen' or sumthng like it! Plus i want the wireless of my laptop to make an ad hoc connection to my mobile fone, which is also no possible...i think its some problem with da dhcp server.

I know it sounds weird, but what happens is that i'm using a 3G modem to connect to the internet and 3G connections are still very unstable with ubuntu's network manager. Fortunately, the modem works a lot better with my Virtual Machine. I have already set up a "host only" network between my Windows XP guest and my Ubuntu host and i can they can ping each other but i still can't share the connection of my virtual machine. I already selected "share this connection" on win xp but i think i still have to configure something on ubuntu for it to work. The interface Ubuntu uses is vboxnet0 (not eth0).
This is the last thing to do before i can get rid of my Windows XP partition
configuring Internet Connection Sharing from my Ubuntu 10.10 machine to a Windows XP machine. I've seen How To's but they didn't work, yet.
The Ubuntu machine connects to the Internet through a DSL USB modem that required packages not provided with the distribution, and specific instructions to configure it; so getting Internet working alone was difficult. As a result, I don't even use Network Manager, rather connect using the command pppoe-start. The machine is connected to the Windows PC through a simple cable, through the Ethernet card.
Some tutorials I've seen on ICS are for machines with two Ethernet cards, or for wireless connections; but I've seen none for a USB modem. However I once found one, years ago, and it worked, but I couldn't find it now. It was using iptables, and I didn't really understand what I was doing, but it worked. But then I had to format the disk, and now I can't find a way to get it working again.
I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

I also have an iMac..2 external hard drive and a BSNL 3G usb data card. I want to setup a network so i can share my files and internet connection between the 3 systems. I don't know what i want to do is possible or not. what i want to do:
1) connect the usb data card to Acer and share the internet connection using the inbuilt wireless card in the laptop so that the dell and imac can access it.
2) connecting the 2 ext. hard drive to Acer and sharing the files over the same connection( wireless connection used to share internet with other systems) so that i can access the files from my dell and imac. I want to mention that i don't have a router.

I have been trying off and on for weeks to share my Internet connection with a Windows XP client (netbook). While I can ping back and forth between the two machines, in the form of a ping test, I can't get to the Internet from the client, no matter what I try.
My Ubuntu 9.10 desktop (host) has two NICs, eth0 and eth1. eth0 connects to the Internet. eth1 goes to the Windows XP client. Regardless of whether I use an Ethernet crossover cable or a standard cable, I can get the two machines to talk to each other, but no further.
Things I already tried:
-Tried setting eth1 to "shared" mode in NetworkManager on the host. I set the Win XP machine to automatically acquire an address & DNS. Didn't work.
-Manually configured the IP settings on both machines, like this:

Despite all of the above, I still cannot share the host's Internet connection with the client. I don't understand where the client's traffic is going, and why I can't share the connection. As far as I know, I am not doing any sort of firewalling or blocking on the host, so there is no obvious reason that the client's traffic simply disappears. I just know that whenever I open a Web browser on the client, all I ever get is error messages.
I have had no issues setting up a shared connection when the host runs Windows XP, so I am pretty sure there is no broken hardware causing the problem. Why can't I share the connection under Ubuntu?
Over the last several days, I've been trying like hell to share my (wired) Internet connection with a netbook, running Windows XP, attached via crossover cable to my desktop's extra NIC (eth0). The eth0 link is established, but I can't get to the Internet from the Windows XP machine.I can ping one machine from the other, but any bits sent from the Win XP netbook mysteriously disappear when trying to reach any website.
There is no firewall running on the Ubuntu machine as far as I know. Windows Firewall is likewise disabled on the Windows XP machine. The Ubuntu machine connects to the Internet through another wired NIC, eth1.In Windows XP parlance, what I am trying to do would be called "bridging," where eth0 and eth1 would be the two parts of the bridge. In fact I already made it work, with both the netbook and my desktop running Windows XP. It took about 5 minutes.I can't believe what a huge pain this has been in Ubuntu. I'm pretty much ready to give up. There seems to be no way to get an Ubuntu system and a Windows XP system to share an Internet connection.

I want my XP box to be able to use this printer as well. I can ping my XP box from my Linux box (and vice versa), and the XP box has the HP print driver installed.When I go into my XP box and try to add a printer, I click "A network printer or a printer attached to another computer", then "Connetc to a printer on the Internet or on a home office network" and enter my printer.I'm using the printer name as show in CUPS. I also tried it without port 631. Either way, I get an error message saying "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server.

View 4 Replies View RelatedCurrently my job is to make websites with Django. I use many things like virtualenv, PIL, etc. The problem is, I can't stand Linux on my desktop. I like it on servers, It's greate to use it over the SSH. But for desktop? No way. But for the development Linux is quite essential. Of course almost everything is ported to Windows, but it's not as simple to use as in Linux. For example, Windows shell is awful in comparison with Linux. So I've tried Cygwin, but it's too damn slow. Every time django dev server reloads, it tooks almost 20-30 seconds. In comparison, then using "native" python on Windows or Linux, it reloads instantly. Even worse, Cygwin makes all my system very slow.
I've been thinking about it and have thought up a way to go. I can share a folder with my application with some Linux box. The devserver and everything will run on that box, while I'll be happy editing files and running the browser on my Windows 7. SSH shell is much quickier and handy than Cygwin. Currently there are no Linux boxes in my home network (except for my android phone :) but I have several VDS boxes with Debian.
So, how do I share a Windows folder with VDS box? I can't rely on my desktop IP but I can rely on the VDS's one. I need sharing to be as quick as possible (well, 2-3 seconds ping is OK) and "native" for both systems, so I could use a folder like a normal folder in both Windows and Linux.

Can I actually copy things from my laptop to her machine using 'scp', or is PuTTY just used for browsing my linux filesystem on a windows machine? Google has been telling me about some software called 'WinSCP', which can copy files over, but I was just wandering if i can do this anyway using PuTTY?

The first time i did connect to my laptop from my GF's laptop (and also my ubuntu desktop) I get the warning about the host key is not cached in client machine("the server's rsa2 key fingerprint is: ssh-rsa XXXX xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx: etc etc). I understand why this happens, but I have no idea where to find this value on my host laptop. I can find the actual key, but not the fingerprint (i.e. the xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx" etc). i blindly typed "yes" to get SSH working?
3. When i connect from the internet (rather than over my home network) will i need some kind of 'shell login account' to do this cuz i dont have a static IP. ie i'd like to do 'ssh tom@myAccount.com' rather than 'tom@123.432.32.23'? Where or how can i make this happen?
i have a udp server running at port 60178. when i connect to it from localhost there is no problem. when i use the client from a remote host i am not able to connect. I changed my server firewall settings[Fedora 11] and added "udp 60178" to trusted ports but still nothing happened. I ran wireshark and observed that packets are coming to the server machine but server returns a "Port Unreachable" ICMP message and doesnt give the packet to the application.
