Ubuntu :: Using 'gdmsetup' To Install A New Login Screen?
Nov 28, 2010I downloaded the "BlueSwirl" login screen theme from [URL]..After extracting the tar ball I read the install and readme files files. The readme was useless but the install file said to use 'gdmsetup' to install. so I pulled up a terminal window and ran 'gdmsetup' and this is what came out.

Aug 5, 2010When lauching gdmsetup I can't unlock it to change settings. nothing happens when clicking on "lock" button
the same problem in Ubuntu Software Center 2.0.7. nothing happens when I pull "Install"
(no authorization starts)
there are no authorization window in admin-shares too
It started when I have changed the type of ubuntu login - I have changed from gdmsetup settings from "password" to automatic authorization.
I checked the the PolicyKit Agent. It seems to working (and autostarting) with such command:
/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1

Aug 5, 2010I'm trying to run the "Login Window" application in Ubuntu to allow me to setup automatic login. When I select it all I get is a message in the task bar stating an application is starting then that disappears but the app does not start.I've also tried starting it from the command line using gksu /usr/sbin/gdmsetup but this has the same result and does not yield any more clues to the problemMy next thought was to reinstall gdm but I'm not sure about that.

Apr 5, 2011I cannot install Kubuntu 8.04LTS. When I run the Live CD and click to install it gets me the box that should show me my hard drives and possible partitions but the box is empty. I get the same when booting to the Live CD and clicking on install. I have had this CD since Kubuntu 8.04 was released. So not knowing what might be wrong I figure I will ask here for what to type in a command line to install it. I know it is an old version but it is the last one with KDE 3.5.

Sep 3, 2010Couple of days I go I setup VLC using Kubuntu's graphic software manager, and installed the 3 plug-ins, one of which was related to pulse. After doing this sound stopped working in flash videos. I had read, not sure where, that Kubuntu didn't use pulse (which slipped my mind when setting up VLC).
So I make the mistake of removing everything which had pulse in it's name (again, via the graphic software manager). A message popped-up saying that some packages needed to be removed/edited (a LONG list, a big clue that I was doing something stupid I guess). I let it run it's course and after that it won't boot properly.
If I boot it normally it hangs at the Kubuntu screen with the five dots filling endlessly. If I press F1 it's stuck at "checking battery status."
Recovery mode boots, but the recovery option does nothing.
So I was wondering if I could boot into recovery mode and go into the terminal and add a live USB as a repository for apt, and try to salvage the install?
Or should I admit defeat and reinstall?

Nov 6, 2009In a couple days I plan on changing to opensuse from kubuntu. Anyway in the Kpackagemanager I removed the pulseaudio client (and its dependencies) and it messed up my system a bit. I don't really mind but all I need is to get my files from my home folder off my hdd to an external through usb 2.0. When Kubuntu 9.10 boots now all it is is a command terminal basically and I don't know the specific commands to get the files. Or if I need to reinstall something so that it boots up with a graphical looking UI again.

Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

Mar 7, 2011I would like to apply KDE on my Kubuntu because the current one blew up. But each time I to sudo get-apt it seems to be fetching from the cloud. Is there a way I can make it to read from my local Kubuntu CD? I have both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Kubuntu Live CDs.
I believe the local disk read should be faster to translate than to bite the bytes across thousands of miles over the wire right?

Feb 26, 2010I changed from Ubuntu to Kubuntu by installing KDE. I'm not sure if I have Ubuntu or Kubuntu now because at login I can choose between both desktops.Anyway, when using Gnome, about once a week it asked for upgrades, and then did this all in the background.
Now with KDE, this doesn't work anymore. At some point there came a screen that was similar to that of Gnome, except if I pressed ok to update and entered my password, it crashed and brought up the KDE crash handler.

I don't know why but my Kubuntu system gets freeze after some period of usage. I believe it is random because I don't see any fixed time period or any software. But my knowledge is yet limited in Ubuntu, so what are the places I can check if it has any h/w or s/w issues ??
Just to let you guys know, Originally I had only Ubuntu installed. But I installed Kubuntu just few days ago along with Ubuntu using,

Ubuntu :: Kubuntu And Win 7 Run Without A Bootloader?
Apr 29, 2011Kubuntu and win 7 have their own separate hard drives. The problem showed up when I installed the new Kubuntu 11.04 (disconnected win7 hard drive in hope that it wouldn't affect the win boot loader) . As of now, it's just an annoyance since I can just hit f12 quickly during startup and decide which one I want to boot. I tried doing what other tutorial suggest, but I am a little nervous about their instruction in reference to what number I should jot down since situation may be a little different.
Basically, I want Grub or whatever good working boot-loader to be installed (I heard a rumor that a click-able one was in the making) on my Kubuntu hard drive, and avoid affecting my win 7 hard drive (they research now with the updates to make sure you got their boot-loader running *sigh).
Here is some data I collected from partition editor, hopefully this will assist somebody in understanding my problem better:

Aug 10, 2011I just installed Kubuntu 11.04 on my netbook, and it is acting up more than what Windows 7 Starter would!Every time I enable the visual effects, things start to run so slow that it automatically disables them again, and every time I go to change the desktop background, either the desktop goes blank or the x server crashes completely and restarts.Kubuntu 10.10 and Ubuntu 11.04 work just fine, but I like the driver support and features that Kubuntu 11.04 has.
