I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed and was working excellently until yesterday when I uninstalled a few programs.From that time I am getting this error " Graphic card driver not configured/installed Start Ubuntu in low graphic mode?" When I say YES to start Ubuntu in Low Graphic Mode the system takes infinite time and never proceeds to login menu. But from Command line I can access web using w3m command.

I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 9.10, and is the only OS installed on my system. Yesterday, my desktop stopped working - no right-click function / display of icons. My wallpaper was still intact. The last thing I did was pressed ALT + F2 and executed "gksudo nautilus". This fixed my desktop for the time being, but wasn't showing the correct icons/wallpaper.The real problem started when I restarted. I get the normal login screen, and when I enter my info, it just restarts back to the login screen. I know I am entering the correct information, my caps lock isn't on etc. If I enter my password incorrectly it doesn't reload, it just acts normal and says the pw was wrong. Only when I enter my info correctly does it go to a black screen really quick, then come back to the boot screen.
I am at work right now, but will be checking this thread again later tonight. Please help, I am locked out of my computer which I desperately need to log in to!

But when I tried to install Global Menu, but it didn't work so restarted machine. But after booting Ubuntu Logo shows while loading and after that Blank screen appears with a cursor and nothing happens.
I tried to uninstall theme from recovery mode but didn't help.
I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and it's working fine. The only problem I have is that grub is not showing and I automatically come across the login screen.

I install Fedora 13 from live CD to harddrive. after that i install KDE desktop. It works properly but after 2-3 days when I open my linux box then only Gnome only come there is no KDE selection at login screen.

Then when the desktop should appear, on the very left edge of the screen, about 5 pixels in size, you can see the panel and the rest of the desktop. But I stress, You still see the cursor. In this small area, you can right click as you, even click on the menu and it will come down, you can see it. I can click on Ubuntu SC and the cursor will turn to a loading symbol. But then nothing again. I can press Ctrl + Alt + F2 and terminal will come on fine. So far, this has happened on a live CD of Maverick, A live USB of Maverick, A Natty Narwhal Fresh Install, A Maverick Fresh install, A Karmic Old Install and That same Karmic After going through a Distro upgrade via Ctrl + Alt + F2 to 11.04. I've gotten all the updates for all of them (A slow, bandwidth wasting process), and this doen't happen on other computers, even ones with lower graphics cards then mine. Additionally, on the same computer on a seperate partion, I can load my main Maverick just fine, Indicateing that it can't be a hardware problem. After searching across the internet, I'm at loss to an answer.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI installed some weeks ago Fedora 14 via burnt iso file downloaded from official Fedora site. It was working perfectly like a charm for me until yesterday when I tried to install zend server for PHP.During my first try of installation of zend server it corrupted out my apache server and I lost apache on http://localhost.I removed all "zend-server" like stuff from "Add Remove Software" screen.
Installed again apache 2 in the form of LAMP (Linux Apache Mysql Php)via terminal. Apache installed correctly and started workeing again ok on localhost.n again I tried to install zend server from install.sh file in downloaded zend server installation. It showed me after a while like "zend server installed successfully".I shut down my pc thinking everything is ok now.
Today when I started my system, it shows me boot screen of Fedora, I select fedora and then it shows me baloon filling up for around 5-7 secs. Then all of a sudden a black screen appears up with a cursor blinking at its top left and then nothing else happens further. I cannot find login screen to my desktop anymore.I remember one thing thating reinstallation of apache from terminal, I set following command like "chkconfig --level 235 httpd" (I guess that's what I have written as per some online tutorial for LAMP). Is that cause of mine problem ot its something else?
I've installed Ubuntu desktop edition 10.04 so far, using alcohol tool as I wanted to install "inside Windows".I successfully installed it everything seems to be fine to me. But, the problem is when I select Ubuntu from boot menu it stops at a console with some grub loader message and doesn't shows login screen.
Please, not that I had installed it a couple of time before and it worked perfectly for some reason and Windows problem I had to uninstall it.
I can also post pictures of that screen if you require, I've to capture it through my mobile phone, which is with suck graphics.

My laptop did a "shutdown" (not reboot) automatically over night when I was downloading few things. When I tried to boot it up, it boots up & it never displays the window which asks for password. I have tired to reboot it several times since then it still stays at the same place. Since it is not displaying username & password window & I am not able to login through gdm. Interesting thing is the normal sound which comes when the login window is display is heard but the window is not seen. However when I press ctrl+alt+f5 I am able to login there which is only text based login.
I tried several things to get out of issue like
1) In the console run
ps -eaf | grep -i gdm
I see that the login process is running but is not displaying the window.
2) sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg ( it didnt ask me anything about the driver or anything like that & just returned with out any error message )
$? of the above command was 0.
==> reboot after this & still the login window would not come.
3) After login at the console ( ctrl_alt+f5 )
sudo service gdm stop ==> no error prints
sudo service sdm start ==> no error prints
==> no login window
4) apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop
apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
==> no login window
5) export DISPLAY=:0.0
sudo -u gdm gnome-control-center 2>gdm.txt ( this the attached error messages)
ctrl+alt+f7
==> no login window
I would hate to reinstall ubuntu again cause of the amount of software + data + personalization.
While installing Lubuntu 10.04, I opted for Auto login, but now I want to go for it.
How can I restore that option, so that I get the login window on start up.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a second OS on my XP machine (on a second partition). It worked fine for about a month, but this time when I booted up in Ubuntu, it showed the Ubuntu loading screen, then the desktop background picture and mouse, but it did not load the login window. I have no idea how to fix this, because most problems are about the entire X server not working, whereas my screen works.
I tried pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1, stopping gdm, then running startx, which mostly worked, except the date and time status bar addons had an error loading and the task bar did not have any workspace icons on it. I would like to login the normal way to get back to my good old Ubuntu desktop, but the window does not want to load. I have restarted the computer multiple times, with the same result.
Everything looks fine until when the login screen should show up but doesn't. The cursor is there and can move. I can switch to terminal by ctl-alt-F*, and login. After gdm stop and startx, gnome is back but only in fail safe mode, with non-movable non-resizable window, only one workspace, and cursor is a black cross.
I ever met a similar case before, which comes to the login screen but it keeps reloading after entering password. Finally got solved by run sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop in terminal. This time it doesn't work anymore.
I am aware of how to run scripts on startup, but I don't know how to do the following everytime ubuntu starts up:
1. automatically open a new terminal window (I know how to do this)
2. automatically run a specific script in that terminal (I want to leave this terminal open indefinitely)
I have created two additional users and now wanted to delete them. I did so in system / administration / users and group as well es through the terminal. However - when I reboot the computer the users I had deleted seem to be back. They show up on the welcome screen but when I click on them they don't work any more. How can I delete them alltogether?

I thought, and installed it through the Software Centre on my 10.04 laptop. I washoping/expecting that xfce would then become an option in the Sessions pulldown at log-on, but no such luck. What should I be doing? It is not my intention to switch to xubuntu, just to take another look at an alternative window manager.

The background is still there, as well as the on-screen keyboard I have set to appear at startup. tty1-6 all work just fine, although they they dont automatically connect to wifi so i have to go wired (or learn how to connect to wifi via tty1) if i need to use the internet for this. Before this issue popped up, I had tried out xmonad and upon switching back to compiz, I have to run "compiz --replace" every time I log in which may have something to do with this problem. I also installed and uninstalled gnome 3 before that, so I may have broken something with all that.
