Debian :: Nvidia Driver Won't Detect Resolution

Dec 18, 2010

The nouvea drivers work with some xrandr magic, but the closed-source drivers won't. They fail to detect a possible resolution over 640x480. My monitor has a native resolution of 1440x900 @ 60hz. I've tried to modify my xorg.conf, but to no avail. I installed the latest nvidia drivers from the site instead of the repo drivers, version: 260.19.29, this is my xorg.conf, basically a standard xorg file:

Networking :: Driver - Unable To Detect Any Wireless Networks

Mar 9, 2011

Right so I just bought an Acer TimelineX with a Broadcom BCM43225 BCM43225 802.11b/g/n WiFi card. With this card I am not able to detect any wireless networks and after googling around I found out other people have had similar issues. But my problem is kind of unique in the sense that I'm using Backtrack as my Linux distribution (I'm not a blackhat or anything, more of an enthusiast with no malicious intentions) Also I'm not a God at Linux so if you have any solutions please be verbose! I tried the following: [URL] But the Makefile spits out a syntax error. (Makefile:29: *** missing separator. Stop.)

Debian Hardware :: Linux Non-free ATI Driver Causing Login Freeze

Oct 22, 2015

Whilst watching my system boot I see the following error:

'drm: radeon pci probe error kernel requires firmware non-free'.

When I install the ATI graphics driver, sure - I get all the screen resolutions I could possibly want, but the cost appears to be that it makes it causes my system to freeze at the user name and password screen. Sometimes the cursor blinks teasingly, but nothing appears as I type; sometimes the cursor itself is frozen.

My question isn't about the myriad of theoretical key combinations that might work - none of them have thus far.

I'm wondering whether I can simply continue using the default driver that the debian installer (ver. 8 stable 'Jessie') installed on my system. It's true that I only get 3 choices of screen resolution - 1152x864, 1024x768, and 800x600 - but my system seems so much more stable than when I install the proprietary ATI driver.

Aside from the login screen freezing - more often than not, strange things were happening keyboard wise - especially when composing posts for forums - the cursor would suddenly jump to another line of previously composed text for example!

So, can I keep the default driver or is it best to install the ATI driver and attempt to troubleshoot it? Is it even possible to troubleshoot a problematic driver - I knew how to do such things in Windows, but still learning about linux.

Also, when my system freezes at login (for whatever reason), if I'm obliged to simply hit the laptop power button to power down and press it again to restart - is this potentially damaging/corrupting my system - Debian, or indeed my hard drive?

Going forward, is the ATI driver issue likely be addressed in future Debian releases? Obviously, I would prefer to have the proper driver installed so as to have more screen resolution options - since I will be using my laptop for developing and testing web sites.

Programming :: Write MIDI Driver / Interfacing With Linux MIDI

Jul 31, 2011

I am building a midi synthesizer that I'd like to be able to control from linux. I know its a rather broad question, but, how do I go about this? At this point the hardware consists of a simple UART bridge, and I've already written a simple C++ program using termios to send the raw midi data to the device. Obviously I don't want to write a player/sequencer from scratch, so where should I start if I wanted to get this thing to work with, say, a sequencer like rosegarden? Do I write the driver for rosegarden, or hook into alsa or what?

Debian Multimedia :: XOrg Auto-detect Failing To Detect Max Screen Resolution

May 29, 2011

I've installed Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64 on my laptop (Alienware M17X R3, Intel i7 Sandybridge, ATI Technologies Inc Broadway [ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6800 Series])The screen is 17", with maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.

Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.

When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card. What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Does Not Detect SATA HD For Installation?

Mar 4, 2010

I've posted about this problem on a lot of similar threads and found nothing, so I'm creating a new one in the hopes of finally getting some answers.Ubuntu 9.10 never detected my two, IDE-controlled, non-RAID SATA drives. I never bothered to make it until the PATA drive that was running karmic died. Now I'm trying to dual-boot with my XP install on those SATA drives, but I can't get ubuntu to recognize them.Mobo: ASUS a8v-xe, North Bridge VIA K8T890, South Bridge VIA VT8251, Phoenix AwardBIOSHDs: one SATA 3.0 40 gB Maxtor drive, and one SATA 3.0 500 gB WD drive. The drives are not RAID, and the BIOS lists them as IDE-controlled.The install partitioner does not detect any drives. When I boot off of the live CD, neither GParted nor Disk utility detects them.I have tried each of the following, with no luck:

-removing DMRAID, both in Synaptic and Terminal
-installing with 8.10, 9.10 txt-alternate, and 10.04 Beta
-booting in expert mode with txt-alternate CD and disabling RAID

Debian Installation :: Several Versions Of Linux On One PC

Nov 11, 2014

Is it correct to assume that I can install many versions of Linux on a PC, provided for each Linux I set up a separate ext4 partition, and GRUB will let me select which OS to load? If so then:

1. I do not have to set up a separate SWAP partition for each Linux, do I? Will one SWAP serve all the OS?

2. If I wanted my /home directory to reside on a separate partition so that my data will not be lost if I reinstall Linux, do I have to create a separate /home partition for every Linux? Or they can share one?
