I have Centos5.3 64 bit installed. My board in GIGABYTE GA-G31M-S2L Mother Board. Linux doesnot detect my lan card and the light goes off while I boot into linux but it works well on XP.
What will I do ?
I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit.
It came up saying I could install 2 proprietary drivers, one for my WiFi adapter (which works perfectly) and one for my graphics card - a Sapphire AIT Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card. The driver is called ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. Before installing this driver I was unable to have Extra Visual Effects in Appearances. However after installing (and restarting) the menu bars are now in a basic light gray mode, rather than the sleek Ubuntu black. - Although Extra Visual Effects does now work. I've tried rebooting, and I've had a look around in ATI "Catalyst Control Center" but nothing has worked so far.
Does anybody know what this windows mode is, how to change it back to normal and why it's doing it in the first place?

I upgraded to fedora 13 from fedora 11.
i used the preupgrade method.
i am running dual boot with win7 as 2nd OS
after downloading all packages, the preupgrade asked to reboot. after bootloader started, the screen haults and displays "FINDING STORAGE DEVICES" and doesnot go any further.
I hae tried both options of enabling and disabling sata option, but it didn't worked.
i was trying to uninstall old nvidia driver and install new driver via terminal. i used these commands (sudo dpkg -p nvidia -173; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove) and then this is the one that froze up on me (sudo apt-get install nvidia-current)computer froze while installing the new driver. now i cant boot up ubuntu 11.04. i get the grub menu but cant boot OS. i cant get recovery mode to boot either. it stops after it reads my dvd drive. i dont remember exactly what i did to get this message but i got a message that says alloc magic is broken at 0xb7ce5c80. im assuming that i have no graphics card driver installed and this is why i cant boot. is there anyway to boot from a live cd and manually install the graphics card driver? im on a dual boot with win7 and upgraded from ubuntu 10.10 so i dont really want to do a clean install and have to install tons of software etc.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 online today. I was using 10.04 32-bit before, and the network drivers were easy to find and install. Ubuntu did the job for me and they worked flawlessly. It was a relief I didn't need to search around.
Even though 10.10 (64bit) found the drivers for me, both ethernet and wireless, they do not seem to be working alright. I installed both, made a restart. I found that the WiFi light on my laptop stays on, even if the wireless network is turned off using either the key combination (Fn+F2), or manually turning it off.
Issues with the ethernet? I am right now using ethernet but it does not care to detect the connection. Empathy won't connect automatically as a result- says no network connection. But here I am, posting this. Evidently, there is a connection, right?
Issues with the wireless? The WiFi light stays on all the time, and it isn't able to get hang of the connection I have at home. It just won't show any wireless connections available. When I tried to connect by giving it the SSID and the encryption type and password, it didn't work. Just kept asking for the password again and again (I have checked with the router- the password is correct).
I have a full install on a dedicated partition. And the problem persists. I have tacked it down to the driver for my video card [nVidia 9600m GS]. When I disable the driver, it somewhat returns to normal [it works fine on shut down, but boot up is still buggy]. However, this makes Docky complain about compositing [it will still work, but there's a black void around it] not being enabled. I also assume that lacking the driver will cause problems if I try to do anything 3D.

Now every time I boot Win XP, the Internet Explorer menu bar is all blacked out and goofy. If I log out and back in it corrects itself. If I reboot it's blacked out again. Re-installed IE8. Still blacks out.Also Firefox in Win XP crashes expectantly. It has NEVER crashed on me previously.
I recently downloaded ubuntu 9.10. I have a dell d410 with a built in wireless card. It won't detect it, and I have no access to a wired connection for now.
View 6 Replies View Related The nouvea drivers work with some xrandr magic, but the closed-source drivers won't. They fail to detect a possible resolution over 640x480. My monitor has a native resolution of 1440x900 @ 60hz. I've tried to modify my xorg.conf, but to no avail. I installed the latest nvidia drivers from the site instead of the repo drivers, version: 260.19.29, this is my xorg.conf, basically a standard xorg file:

View 9 Replies View RelatedEver since I switched from windows I miss the fact that gaming is not all that well on linux. I think that is pretty unfortunate. The games I'd like to play are team fortress 2 and a bit of civilization 4. Luckily for me, these games are known to run good through wine. But the bad thing for me is that I had an old ATI card and I was stuck with the bad driver that caused all these games to crash. So I had it with this. Each time I wanted to play I needed to restart to windows. So I saved some money and yesterday I bought a geforce 640 GTX.
When I boot up the computer for the first time with my card it all seems to work well. It just did not detect my new card automatically. And now I have to confess I'm not all that experienced with ubuntu and getting some things done. But I thought, ah well.. 10.10 is coming up, lets update to the release candidate and see how things are going from there. A new card and new version of ubuntu, woohoo! Now after the update it did detect the driver and it seems to run pretty well, but I do have a few problems.
I have a small second screen to extend my primary desktop. In the NVIDIA X Server Settings and under the tab 'X Server Display Configuration' I have the second screen in 'TwinView' and it seems to work well. Untill I restart my screen that is. After a restart I have to keep activating my second screen. I was kind of hoping it'd save the settings.
The other problem is what I get when playing team fortress 2. I'm not sure this is the right place to ask here, or I should better head to the wine forums or something, but I do hope to fix this. When I have the second screen enabled, and I'd like to start team fortress 2 it gives a warning: 'Failed to create D3D devide'. Doing some googling, it seems to be a resolution problem. After I disable the second screen, it works again.
Then with the second screen disabled it seems to finally run. But unfortunately after 5/10 min the I get kicked out of the server with the message 'Disconnected: Client timed out'. I did some googling arond and there's not much results relating to wine/ubuntu, but most windows users seem to have this problem because of a firewall. Now, I'm using ubuntu and not using a firewall as far as I know (there's probably some build in, I just take that as it is ). But maybe anyone here knows how to fix this and I do get to finally play team fortress 2 on ubuntu?
I installed Ubuntu 10.4 some time ago but it does not detect any audio card. I checked via terminal with the aplay -l command. how to install the audio card?

I installed ubuntu 10.04 alternate version recently. I am able to install broadcom STA wireless driver for model 4321. Even if it is listed under System>Hardware Driver, it gives me an error when I try to activate it. It asks me to read the file var/log/jockey.log.
I read the file and i found this:
/sys/module/wl/drivers does not exist, cannot rebind wl drivers.

Right so I just bought an Acer TimelineX with a Broadcom BCM43225 BCM43225 802.11b/g/n WiFi card. With this card I am not able to detect any wireless networks and after googling around I found out other people have had similar issues. But my problem is kind of unique in the sense that I'm using Backtrack as my Linux distribution (I'm not a blackhat or anything, more of an enthusiast with no malicious intentions) Also I'm not a God at Linux so if you have any solutions please be verbose! I would like to use the latter, but I can't get anything to detect it. Testing which is in operation is easy: they have separate video outputs. I've tried changing the BIOS settings, but to no avail. I'm stumped. Could it be that my other card is dead? How could I test it? I'm fairly certain that it worked back when I used Windows, as I remember having to use my DVI-to-VGA converter (the other card's outputs are all DVI).

I do have a bit of history behind this card that might help to solve this problem. If I boot from the Live CD then it will show the card and it works. How can I make my Linux installation detect this card? I was thinking that I could somehow copy the necessary files from the Live CD to make this work, but maybe there's an easier way.
