Hardware :: Corrupted Drive- Mechanical Or Logical - Fsck Repair?

Sep 7, 2010

I was working on my RHEL 5.2 workstation yesterday when the OS became flakey. first I noticed that some software that I had running was outputting and error that it was unable to write to log file because permission was denied - I've never seen this output before- it would have been writing to my home dir running under my user name. From an open terminal, i did "ls -al" and saw that many of the permissions the files in my home dir were listed as "????????" some were still "rwxrwxrwx", as well, many files were highlighted in the colors set for links and root privileges.

I tried to start a new terminal, and it failed. then Gnome crashed. When I reset the Machine, I got through grub, and into the startup, and after finding the Volumes, the startup failed with a Kernel panic:

giving several errors- like:

I dont have much experiencie with this stuff, but it looks obvious that somethig like the MBR or wherever the partion information is stored might have been corrupted.

What I dont understand is why I can get into GRUB (its a dual boot Windows Vista, RHEL machine). I'm guessing that this means its not a mechanical problem, because I can get RHEL to begin to boot which i think is failing somewhere around the /etc/rc.d/re.sysinit script, and also can get Vista to bring up the inital windows screen and a mouse pointer on spanning both of my screens which i think means that it must have at least loaded my ati drivers for my dual head radeon 4850. windows hangs there however.

I've tried the RHEL 5.2 rescue disc, and it doesn't recognize any Linux partitions.

I ran the system diagnostics out of the dell bios and it came back with a failed HDD : Error code 0142, but from digging around a bit I've found that this is a very broad diagnosis.

My concern over it being a mechanical problem is that I'm not sure that I want to try to run any further diagnostics, or any of the disk utility programs that i've seen listed here on linuxquestions, as it might damage it further, and there is some data that i would really like to get off this disk.

Server :: LVM Repair Of Working Disk With Corrupted But Known Partition Structure?

Sep 8, 2010

I have a hard drive where one partition is used as part of a logical volume (LV) using LVM. The partition table is corrupted and prevents the partitions from showing as devices in /dev/. The corruption prevents the logical volume from coming on-line b/c LVM cannot find the part on the corrupted disk. I (am pretty sure) I know the block offsets and lengths for each partition on the disk but do not want to write to the disk in case I am wrong.

How do I go about recovering the logical volume in this scenario?

Have managed to create a simple script to poll the various printers we have at our company for a page count via SNMP. At the moment the script echos the printer name to a text file and then the snmp output is appended to the next line. In my rush I thought by using sed to add a comma to the end of each line would mean it would import in to excel nicely. So rather than having:

Debian :: Import List From Excel File To Create Many Users

Sep 22, 2015

I'm working in a school and we have a Apple server, we have many problem with it. So, I would install a linux server instead.

Anyway, there is just one big problem (or I miss a simple tip to do it )

We have 1300 students. If I must create them one by one, that will take a lot of time. Actually with the apple server, we can go on a web interface & import an excel list with theses columns :

"Name", "Login", "Password", "Class", "Group", "HDD Space", "Print quota", "Internet access or not", etc ...

Due to this tool, I can upload an excel files with my 1300 students & a couple hours after, they have an account with a personal space & a shared space with their class.

My question is : This tool exist on Debian/Linux world ?

Ubuntu :: Corrupted EXT3 File System?

Feb 9, 2011

I am using Ubuntu since release 8.10, but it is first time when i can`t solve problem

when i tried to create new NTFS partition on unallocated disk space with Paragon Partition Manager (damn, that was stupid). Process was aborted with error (later i finally made it with Gparted without problems)

After reboot mine Ubuntu say:

Code:
Errors were found while checking the disk drive for /

Press F to attempt to fix errors, I to ignore, S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery. I pressed "F" but that had help only for a boot and doesn`t really fix error :`(

Later i booted from liveCD and had checked partition (/dev/sdb1; file system - ext3) with gparted (result - aborted fixing process with error) Now i can`t even boot from that partition and even mount it from other linux system.

mine fdisk -l
Code:
/dev/sdb1 * 1 5957 47849568 83 Linux - problematic partition (unmountable)
/dev/sdb2 5958 29983 192988845 7 HPFS/NTFS

[Code]....

PhotoRec recover most of my files, but i need complete partition.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Delete The (corrupted) File

May 18, 2011

Problem: Cannot delete file

System: Ubuntu 11.04 with KDE desktop

Symptoms: When I try to start Synaptic, I get

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Running the requested command in terminal, I get

ubuntu@ubuntu:/var/lib/dpkg/updates$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: error: failed to open package info file `/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0001' for reading: No such file or directory
ubuntu@ubuntu:/var/lib/dpkg/updates$ ls -l

[code]...

Also tried to move, copy and rename the file and also to delete the updates folder with rmdir. Also tried rm -i * but it seems there is only the one file in the folder. The only strange result is the "total 4" when I run the ls -l command:

Ubuntu Installation :: Repair Kernel - File Not Found?

Mar 22, 2010

When I attempt to boot into Ubuntu 9.10, I get the error: "Error 15: File not found" I know the reason for this - I deleted it - Doh. A latest upgrade told me I didn't have enough room in the boot partition to install the latest files, so I thought it would be a marvellous idea to remove the old stuff, to give it some room. I obviously deleted something that I needed by mistake. I was using synaptic to do the remove & thought I would be safe. A good learning experience.

In grub menu I have options: Kernel: 2.6.31-15 - generic and also its recovery option, both of which get the same error. (It's a dual boot with XP as the original os). Ideally I'd just like to get the latest working kernel and put it somewhere appropriate, rather than do a full install. Is this possible and if so how? I have a separate boot partition (in dev/sda5), swap (sda7) and Linux (sda6).

Ubuntu :: Automatic File System Repair On Boot?

Oct 4, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu Lucid and any sudden power loss will usually cause problems with the file system. When I bring the computer back up, Ubuntu will then scan for errors at boot-time and if any errors are found it prompts me to select whether to repair or ignore them. I would much rather have it select the repair option automatically so that I don't have to be physically present. The reason for this is that i have a web server that should come back online automatically after a power loss.

Ubuntu :: File System Damage Repair Or Reinstall?

Dec 11, 2010

I booted up Ubuntu after a couple weeks of downtime. I think it had just installed updates before I shut it down. It seemed fine. I started updating it, then it started giving me a bunch of errors about the root file system being mounted read only, so I had to reboot. I've heard that it does that if the file system is corrupted or there is a hard disk failure. When I rebooted, it kernel panicked on all but the oldest kernel which did a fsck and rebooted. Then I was able to get back in, but most of my panel applets are gone and cannot be restored, it fails to start x at boot with no errors and I have to start it myself from the command line, it is unable to do updates, samba is gone, whenever I update-grub to add Gentoo to the list, it doesn't stay there and the computer is really slow. I have backed up my home folder to another partition. Do you think I will be able to repair it at all or should I just reinstall?

Ubuntu Installation :: Missing - How To Repair Grub File

Mar 2, 2011

I have installed windows 7 back to its former state in after foolishly messing around with some installation options in an Ubuntu install (this caused windows to disappear, and me to repair it). In *repairing* windows, I overwrote my grub file and the boot options for Ubuntu, so that it looks something like this:

Disk 1: Primary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Free Space ( this is where I have Ubuntu installed)

How can I repair my grub file so that I can boot into my Ubuntu installation?

Hardware :: Help With Testdisk And A Corrupted File System

Aug 1, 2010

I think that my external hard drive was either "unsafely removed" or powered off at a critical moment because when I tried to connect it to any OS Mac, Windows Ubuntu etc. It could not be read. I forget the Windows error message but the Ubuntu one was "mount error 2".In any case I downloaded testdisk asked it to analyze my hd and about half way through it said that the number of heads per cylinder were 128 and it more than likely should be 255 (or the other way around I forget which but I know the numbers are right). So I went and changed the geometry of the external HD such that the number is what testdisk told me was and the result is that my computers can read it but it seems that all the files are missing.

I used photorec and I have recovered all the files (unnamed and disorganized of course)So this leads me to the following question: is there any way I can repair my file system or access the files so that I don't have to go through the 16,000+ files rename and reorganize them again?
