I would like to know if there's a way of checking which program has new updates without internet connection?
Maybe like having a program to grab the currently available programs from a repo?
I installed ubuntu 10 just yesterday. Everything was working just fine. The auto-update function advised me to download and install the latest updates and so I did. It was over 300 MB. I installed it, did a reboot and my internet connection was lost. I tried a few things I found on this forum yesterday. Nothing worked. I can go on-line on the same computer using windows 7. But I always have to reboot to try the different solutions. All right that's fixed! But now I just have to fix Firefox...

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu studio 9.10 amd64 on my MBP 5,3 I need an internet connection for updates and to customise my system etc I tried to connect with a wired connection but for some reason I could not configure the ethernet interface. I tried to install the broadcom bcmwl-kernel-source driver by downloading it on another computer and then using a usb stick to transfer it. I had to go through installing several dependencies including dkms and linux-headers-generic. When I finally succeeded the driver showed up in Hardware privers as proprietry but was inactive. Whenever I try to active it I hit 'Activat' I authenticate and the nothing happens. It remains inactive. The wired connection is not readily available to me so it would be great if it was possible to solve this either via a usb or cd.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 9.10. My internet connection is an ADSL which I have set up using "pppoeconf". The connection starts at boot up. I can also start it if needed by using "sudo pon dsl-provider" and can stop it by using "poff dsl-provider".Recently I noticed that when I start my computer, there is some program (or programs) which is connecting automatically to the internet and downloading and uploading a lot of data. The data transferred can exceed 200 mb or 300 mb in an hour. I don't know what is being uploaded or downloaded.I know for sure that no file sharing programs like bittorrent clients are started at bootup so it is strange that this much data to be downloaded and uploaded without me sharing files or downloading files explicitly. The update software also does not run by default as I have opted to start it manually.
Is there any application which shows the programs that are connected to any particular port and transmitting and receiving data?In Windows XP I use a program called "What's Running" which clearly lists the programs using the different ports in the local machine and the remote IP addresses that the program is connected to. It also shows which program is transmitting and receiving data at any point in time. Is there any similar program for Linux?My internet connection is a data limited package otherwise I probably would not have bothered.
There is this active connection in firestarter: ec2-174-129-193-12.compute-1.amazonaws.com (Port 443 - Service HTTPS - program python)After doing ps aux | grep PID it shows: /usr/bin/python /usr/lib/ubuntuone-client/ubuntuone-syncdaemon...This comes up in the firewall in each login, how do I get rid of it and how did it get there in the first place? Another question is if there is a way to limit a program's access to the internet. For example KCalender.. The things I type up in there may be stored somewhere. How can I disable complete access to the internet for that program and any other program so they can't backup, share, check etc. ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Update Manager set to check for updates daily, to 'only notify about available updates', and have 'important security' and 'Recommended' updates turned on.Since upgrading to 10.04, Update Manager never starts up to tell me that there are updates available. If I run it manually and click on 'Check', I have to type my password in and then it will show that I have updates to install (if there are some of course).
I realise that I shouldn't get a notification icon any more, and that update manager should open instead.Anyone know whether this is something I can fix, or if it's a bug or a problem with the update server that I can't do anything about other than wait?

I have opensuse 11.1 Gnome on Lenovo S10e. I'm wanting to establish a mobile internet connection. I have tried so far...*UMTSMON but when I click on it nothing happens. I have reinstalled the program several times to no avail. *WINE to run the Optus program, however the program doesn't find the HUAWEI USB stick & *Via a Bluetooth connection (use mobile phone as a modem) didn't work either Anyhow, I have tried these and some other ways to get mobile to no avail.

I have openSUSE 11.4 and added repro for Thumbleweed to the basic repro's.As told me I had to do a zypper dup ones for the Thumbleweed-repro to bring system up to date.
1) In KDE I do not see an update-icon in the system-tray anymore: 11.3 had one.Does this mean the auto-update function is disabled?
2) About "levels' of repro's: they are all 99, should Thumbleweed in my case be more important: say 75 ( at least <99 ) ?
3) When I use zypper up I have apps that wants updates and some are "hold back" Is this related to repro's that do refresh but not install ?
4) Someone told me NEVER mesh around with zypper DUP, so he means ONLY use zypper UP.
My update manager is alerting me of new updates to be installed and when I try to install them with apt-get, I receive this error message:

This is the first time I've ever encountered problems updating. I tried updating apt-get thinking maybe this was the problem:
sudo apt-get update
It was successful but it wasn't the problem. I tried Google but the info I could find related to not being able to install specific software. I also tried rebooting my computer just as a last resort and that didn't do anything either.
I changed my internet source from wireless to wired cable which came with a new IP address. Subsequently anytime I try checking for updates from the update manager it still refers me to my old IP address for wireless and here is the results I get:

I have been using the 3 OS regularly with no problems. But today suddenly, I had no internet connection with the 2 linux partitions which are complete independent, but no problems with windows. i can keep using the internet under windows with no problems.
I haven't touched any conf files.
I have a usb wifi internet connection.
I just noticed a change in my dmesg file when i start any of my 2 linux partitions.
At the end of the lines I have the following :
I'm having a problem connecting to the Internet on my gNewSense installation. My Internet works fine through Ubuntu and Windows, but not through gNewSense, is there anyway of fixing this? Also, while searching around I found that somebody said I ought to type "dmesg" and copy the results.

I just downloaded openSUSE 11 but I don't have an internet connection. I thought that it will find my cable connection automatically like Ubuntu does, but it didn't. It doesn't have a normal network configuration set-up, there is nowhere that it even gives me a choice to select local internet connection or a cable connection. What do I have to do to set it up.

I think other end of the cable is terminated to a common switch.I have tried searching it over net. I'm using Linux Mandrake 9.0 on my Dell 750MHz laptop. Linux is not making a dial-up connection, but modem test showed passed. Is there any utility to fix this problem. I have to often use dial-up connection.
