Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Not Checking For Updates

Jun 8, 2010

I have Update Manager set to check for updates daily, to 'only notify about available updates', and have 'important security' and 'Recommended' updates turned on.Since upgrading to 10.04, Update Manager never starts up to tell me that there are updates available. If I run it manually and click on 'Check', I have to type my password in and then it will show that I have updates to install (if there are some of course).

I realise that I shouldn't get a notification icon any more, and that update manager should open instead.Anyone know whether this is something I can fix, or if it's a bug or a problem with the update server that I can't do anything about other than wait?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 - Checking For Updates / Zypper Up / Dup And Thumbleweed

Mar 17, 2011

I have openSUSE 11.4 and added repro for Thumbleweed to the basic repro's.As told me I had to do a zypper dup ones for the Thumbleweed-repro to bring system up to date.

1) In KDE I do not see an update-icon in the system-tray anymore: 11.3 had one.Does this mean the auto-update function is disabled?

2) About "levels' of repro's: they are all 99, should Thumbleweed in my case be more important: say 75 ( at least <99 ) ?

3) When I use zypper up I have apps that wants updates and some are "hold back" Is this related to repro's that do refresh but not install ?

4) Someone told me NEVER mesh around with zypper DUP, so he means ONLY use zypper UP.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Updates Returns To Main Window Without Installing Updates

Mar 24, 2011

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

Any ideas on both?

Ubuntu Installation :: Checking Md5sum Of A Burned CD?

To check the CD, right clicked the md5sum file in it, send to winmd5sum, and then copied the corresponding hash from the ubuntuhashes page into the bottom text box, and compared. The message box says md5 sums are different. Now the question is, have I done it correctly, I mean, is this the way to check a burned CD, OR, is there another way to check md5sum of a burned CD?

Fedora Installation :: Checking For Libraries Currently In Use?

Jul 19, 2010

I have just installed from the Live Cd (Fedora 13). So far so good except that I have just installed the updates (which has taken some time) .

The updater screen shows a full progress bar and next to the progress bar is this text " checking for libraries currently in use" this has been at least one hour showing the same thing, it hasn't changed (PC is still running OK). Does this mean I can safely quit and the updates will be OK or should I keep waiting for a reboot screen or updates success message ? Is this normal, if so how long does it usually take to complete?

Ubuntu Installation :: Distro For Diagnosing / Checking Hardware Components?

Jun 26, 2011

I have an old desktop I've been working to put back together and get working. When I took it apart I was under the assumption there was a problem with the mobo. Now I've begun to question that (the information that led to that belief was very slim).

I'm looking online right now but if anyone knows of a Linux distro I can use to diagnose/ check hardware in that machine. Something that runs live would be preferable. I'm thinking knoppix and am reading about it right now.

Ubuntu Installation :: Edubuntu 10.10 LiveCD - Checking Battery State - Can Not Mount

Apr 14, 2011

I am having a hard time installing Edubuntu 10.10 on a Toshiba L30

System specifications:
Toshiba L30-140
Intel Celeron M CPU 410 1,46 GHz
ATI Radeon XPress 200M Series
MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-841S
Bootable with CD/DVD only

While installing Edubuntu, I encounter two problems:

Can not mount...

I will reach to the screen to select to install Edubuntu and it will even show the green leds. I push F1 to get more detailed messages. After 2 minutes or so I will have this error message:

Code:

This error appears randomly. Out of ten attempts to boot, 6 times I will get this error message. 4 times I will get to...

Checking battery state ... [OK]

This will advance up to "Checking battery state... [OK]" which will freeze there with no DVD or HDD-Activity visible.

I encountered very many threads on the "checking battery state" issue, but they seemed obsolete to me, since most of them referred to Ibex. Also this is the Edubuntu LiveCD, it has not yet been installed on the HDD.

Nonetheless, for the Checking Battery State problem I have tried solutions for Ibex such as "acpi=force pci=noacpi" and "acpi=off". But it wouldn't work. Some people also suggested changing the graphic configurations, this is ATI however, not Nvidia and the BIOS does not offer the option to change it.

Strangely, the installation has worked brilliantly (with the same dvd) on another computer (some Laptop Toshiba L30), so I don't believe it might be a damaged disk.

Fedora :: System Freezes After Checking Media During Installation

May 27, 2011

I tried installing F14 and F15 but display resulted in freezing. The display would work upto "Check Media/Skip Test" for media during installation and the system freezes immediately after that. So I did a VNC installation from another system. But the initiation of X would always result in hanging of the box. After googling and trying various solutions, I found a ray of hope in one solution which suggested adding "vesafb:mtrr, ywrap vga=0x318" to the kernel arguments. This resulted in displaying successfully the boot-time flash (Fedora logo being filled with white color) during booting. But "startx" or "inittab 5" result in hanging of the system.

Ubuntu Installation :: Checking Battery State Is Crashing GNOME Desktop Frequently

Jul 12, 2010

Dell Optiplex GX260 (w/onboard Intel graphics) Original install was Ubuntu 9.04. Upgraded twice, first to 9.10, and 2 months or so ago to 10.04. Problem never occurred before version 10.04.

BUG HISTORY: Googling on this problem reveals that it has been around since at least Ubuntu 8.10.

I'll be working away and all of a sudden the entire desktop blows off the screen and is replaced with a console stuck in a loop. The last message I always see in the console is "Checking battery state", then the endless looping begins.

The only way out is CTRL+ALT+SYSRQ+K (kills Xserver, I think) followed by CTRL+ALT+SYSRQ+B (reboots system).

NOTE: If I attempt to restart Xserver, Ubuntu goes into an endless console loop with the same "Checking battery state" message. Does that help anyone figure out what's going on?

I have tried to remove any laptop program that manages power and they uninstall ubuntu-desktop. What gives with Ubuntu's GNOME being dependent on laptop utilities? I'm running a desktop and have no need of laptop utilities.

I have gone to the extreme of starting Ubuntu in Recovery Mode, dropping to a root shell with networking, then removing GNOME and Xserver completely and re-installing them both. The problem STILL occurs.

I have used the following commands to accomplish this:

This problem has made Ubuntu extremely unreliable, as it can crash at any time and DOES... MANY TIMES in a day!

Ubuntu Installation :: Wubi Installation Keeps Crashing On Updates?

Nov 14, 2010

I'm very new to Linux and Ubuntu (about 2 days) and am having a hard time getting Ubuntu to work. I'm not completely sure that I'm posting in the right forum since I have several issues. I can't tell what's causing what.

I'm using the wubi installer for version 10.10 (i386 - 32 bit). I have an AMD 64-bit, but the wubi installer for that only crashes when I try to boot it the very first time. I get a blank screen and my tower is silent. Version 10.04 does the same. Version 10.10 is the only one that gets me somewhere.

So, I installed ndiswrapper and the proper driver for my USB adapter. Now I have 2 main problems:
1). the most relevant to this board is that when I use the update manager to get all 135 updates, I'm prompted to reboot to complete the installation. When I do that, i get the same blank screen and silent tower treatment. Oddly enough however, when I went back to windows, uninstalled ubuntu, then reinstalled it again using wubi, the update manager said that I already updated an hour ago (!?!?.. I assume it's still reading the old files from the previous install attempt). Unfortunately I messed it up anyway trying to fix my second problem...

2). my internet connection fails here and there. I don't know if it's ndiswrapper or the driver or what. Once it fails, it won't reconnect. I have to go into ndiswrapper, delete the current driver and reinstall it. This has happened to me while on the internet (scouring these forums) and while downloading the updates and whenever it feels like it.

Also, the system does freeze up on me here and there as well. Sometimes when I'm using ndiswrapper. Sometimes when I'm authenticating myself. Sometimes in update manager and sometimes in synaptic. Right now it's working. But I haven't updated yet and I'm afraid to try.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub With Full USB Install 10.04 - If Hdds Are Attached, Boot Hangs On "checking Dmi Pool Data..."

Feb 18, 2011

I've recently tried to do a full install to a USB stick using a 10.04 cd.

2 things happen as I boot:

1. if Hdds are attached, boot hangs on "checking dmi pool data..."
2. if hdds not attached, "hdd error" scrolls across screen

boots normally w/o the usb stick. I've set up my partitions on usb stick as

1: fat32 2gb <<windows/storage
2: fat32 1.5gb << future persistent install
3: ext4 4gb << hoped-for full install

1 is the first partition so windows finds it nicely. Before install, i unplugged my hdds so that grub wouldn't get confused. I told the installer to put the full install on sda3 with no swap space. I checked (advanced button on summary page) that bootloader is being installed to the usb on dev/sda (sda since no other drives attached). This should put it in the MBR (i think?)

Seems like I pressed all the right buttons huh? Is there a way to diagnose grub and see what's wrong? is there a reason grub may not initialize properly from a usb drive?
