Ubuntu :: Select Font Characteristics For The So-called MS Fonts (Arial) Instead Of The Menu Showing Bold And Italic
Mar 12, 2010
This is an interaction between OOo and the font package on Ubuntu, so I have searched both sets of forums fruitlessly. In Open Office when I go to select font characteristics for the so-called MS fonts (Arial for example) instead of the menu showing Bold and Italic, it shows "Negreta" and "Cursiva".

I've got a font issue on my system: The normal arial is missing from my system and all software substitutes it with arial-black. It's a system wide problem:Firefox, konqueror and chrome all render Arial texts as Arial-blackOpenOffice and GIMP only display "arial black" in font selection, not arialInkscape displays bot arial and "arial black", but they're the same font.I tried reinstalling liberation-sans-fonts package and even rebooted, but the problem remains. I checked my fontconfig configuration, but nothing seems to be wrong.I believe the problem first occured after I uninstalled VirtualBox (proprietary edition). But I'm not sure.

I have a pdf file (nasm documentation) that used to be displayed perfectly with xpdf, but now all code example lines remain blank. On the terminal I get repeated lines such as:
Quote:
Error: Couldn't create a font for 'Courier Bold'
Error: Couldn't create a font for 'Courier'
I tried to figure out the problem... the same problem occurs with both evince and okular. However it does not occur when opening the same file under root (tested with xpdf), so it seems to be some permission problem. I tried searching on the error message but couldn't find a working solution.

I've installed Arial fonts as per this package:msttcore-fonts-2.0-3.noarch.rpmut why do some of the Arial fonts look not right in Firefox 3.5? It seems that Arial 10pt bold is the worst, with large spacing between the letters. In Ubuntu, using that same RPM and the same version of Firefox, the fonts look fine.I have two screen shots you can click on:1) Fedora 12 beta:Ubuntu 9.04:irefox-ubuntu.gifLook at the top left corner, "Jamieson Cottages by the River" - it's almost like the Arial 10pt bold is double spaced in Fedora.Whereas in Ubuntu, things look much better in terms of letter spacing.

After upgrade to Opera 10.60 on my Gentoo Linux it stopped reading fonts.conf all of a sudden and now I am not happy with how Arial bold looks in non-Latin letters. Particularly bold cyrillic "ΠΌ" letter looks almost as black square when Arial is used.I want to tell opera not to use Arial at all, there are plenty ofreplacements: Liberation fonts, Droid, etc. I found stylesheets, but not sure how to write statement which prescribes not to use Arial in web pages.I know that there is "not" selector in CSS v3, but could not make a valid statement out of it.

I've been spending the hours beating my face against the wall and going near insane trying to get arial fonts installed on fedora, so that they can be used in open office.
How might these be installed ?
yum -y install msttcore*
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
Setting up Install Process
No package msttcore* available.

This is a bit of an odd problem that's been happening to me recently. My home folder is a version of Fedora old, I've been using the same one between Fedora 11 and 12 (which I'm now using).
When booting up, I notice that my system fonts are not the ones I have manually set. They're the ugly version, whatever exact font it is. It's only when I select System->Appearances from the menu that the system seems to detect my seletions to use Liberation fonts in all areas, and then everything instantly switches to the more visually pleasing Liberation fonts. This is a strange bug, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction?

Got a problem with fonts in 'Konsole'-windows. 'Bold' fonts are being cut off at the last letter. Sometimes only half the letter is visible, sometimes the letter is completely invisible. No problems with fonts in xterm. Set the standards in '/etc/DIR_COLORS', but the problem still exists in (for example):
- man-pages (headings)
- perldoc (headings)
- vi (infos at bottom, like -- INSERT --)
- ...
Is there a solution to turn off bold fonts in Konsole completely? Would be my favourite! I'm using OpenSUSE 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 "release 2"...

I have used the Tweak Tool to configure Gnome to use bold fonts for Window titles and Interface, but Gnome only applies the regular version of the font. Meanwhile, both Firefox and Thunderbird obey the settings.

I updated and removed some packages that could not be upgraded, and now Firefox and Google Chrome show web pages in bold font by default. By this i mean that all pages not setting font-weight explicitly.
This is on Meerkat, upgraded from long before (Lucid, i believe). I'm guessing the KDE packages are due to me having Amarok and konsole installed some time long ago, so i assumed i could ditch these. The terminal output from the commands above is attached.

So I install a font, don't like it, then uninstall it. Simple enough, but when I say a font, I mean the 465 free true type fonts by Brian Kent. For some reason I thought it had said 45 and thought that font options would be nice. Of course, hardly any of the fonts were worth using, so I uninstalled them. Yet, their names still show up in the list of fonts in all programs that use a font list. There are 465 names that don't have a font associated with them, and it's driving me nuts.

Recently I installed some of the MS Office 2007 fonts onto my Ubuntu 10.10 machine in order to use them. Unfortunately, a few of them look really blocky at font sizes smaller than 16 pt. The two i'm having issues with are Calibri and Cambria. I don't seem to have this issue with any other set of fonts. Here is a screenshot of the issue in question. I remember having this same issue on 10.04, before I upgraded, if it means anything.
By the way, I took the fonts from a windows machine, on which the fonts were working properly.

My goal is when test should be drawn using mono, sans serif family fonts, Korean font should be picked up.I have added below entry in fonts.conf and the font is also installed under fonts directory.
Using FC_DEBUG flag, I checked that score for this font is not coming the "Best Score".I am not sure what the problem is, If I expect fontconfig to just replace sans with my font, it should take that.

After going to Appearance->Fonts, in Natty, I changed the "Window title font" from Tahoma to "Arial Black". Now I can't change it back because Tahoma isn't listed in the "Pick a Font" dialog. I don't know how I originally got Tahoma. I think it did that several versions of Ubuntu ago. How do I get it to show up in the "Pick a Font" dialog? I do have ttf-mscorefonts-installer installed.
Doing:
Code:
# dpkg -L ttf-mscorefonts-installer
shows that they are in this directory:
Code:
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts
But Tahoma is not in there?

fonts not showing up correctly in web browsers and the likes, more specifically bold fonts. On some sites, these show up correctly, but on others, they don't. I have no idea what's causing this, as it seems to have happened without me doing anything (like, literally, I opened a terminal window, then went back to my browser (Chrome, but I suppose that doesn't matter, as it happens on all browsers) and the problem showed up. Note that these fonts used to show up just fine.

I reinstalled Fedora 11 last night because i saw that I could leave out packages that I don't need by unchecking everything in the software selection screen. Anaconda installed about 179 packages and I rebooted. I installed X, GDM, and LXDE, but whenever, I start GDM, all the fonts show up as random boxes, ie. there's no english on the sceen, just boxes. I'm pretty sure that i forgot to install a font that fedora uses for gdm but i don't know which one to install.

I'm very accustomed to using gnome-terminal. Today, out of the blue, the text that shows the things like menu options is extremely small (not readable) (please see screenshot 1).
This is also the case for my favorite text editor gedit (see screenshot 2)
Does anyone know what is causing this and how I can fix it?
I know how to manipulate the size of the text IN the gnome terminal window [from usage: --zoom=ZOOMFACTOR Set the terminal's zoom factor (1.0 = normal size)] but my problem is with the text of the menu options AND --more importantly-- also of the content of gedit text editor.

I feel there's a bit of a misunderstanding going on between C++ and me...My problem is that I have a deque of pointers to a class, and create objects then add them to the deque in a for loop. However, the destructor is called on the object as soon as the loop quits.
Code:
This prints:
Code:
Now, if I change the deque from deque<Test*> to deque<Test> then it works fine - I get:
Code:
However, I can't do this with my actual code, because I am creating a deque of pointers to an abstract class, so it won't let me instantiate the class. (This is all so that I can take advantage of polymorphism, and call functions on a set of similar objects without worrying what type of object I'm dealing with).
So, I suppose my question is: what is the correct way to create that deque of pointers to the abstract class? I don't seem to be barking up the right tree currently.

Im wondering how to create a menu in c like bash's select. I imagine there is already something out but I don't know what it would be. Im a c newb but been scripting for a long time now and trying to pick up a little c.this would be what I am looking to display:
Code:
1) option 1
2) option 2
3) option 3
Make a selection:obviously 1,2,3 would be the only valid selection and anything else would say invalid or something like that.
