Software :: Basic Qt App Doesn't Redraw Window Properly (debian)?

Jan 24, 2011

I've compiled a basic Qt app as given in this tutorial: [URL]... When I run it, the window shows up but Qt doesn't draw in the background. I end up with phantoms from windows behind it: [URL]..The window will draw the background correctly when I resize it -- MOST of the time. And sometimes there will be a noticeable delay between resizing and drawing in the window.

Am I missing some libraries? Is this a bug? Maybe there's something else I can look up to find a solution?I'm running Debian sid, my window manager is fluxbox, and my video card is a GeForce FX Go5200 64M. I should note that this works perfectly well on another computer I have that's running Debian sid as well.

Debian Multimedia :: Xcompmgr 'master' - Rounded Window Borders Don't Draw And Redraw Properly When Using The Terminal (gnome-terminal And The LXDE And Xfce Ones)

Aug 26, 2011

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.

Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.

Ubuntu :: Degrade - Java Apps Freeze And Require Moving The Window Offscreen (below The Screen) To Redraw

Feb 11, 2011

Yes im refering to Windows Degrade and how over time windows just running will degrade and start causing errors. DLLs go missing and bizzare things. Ive seen wierd things happen on a windows machine that is dedicated to one function. Well to my point, recently I have been having many linux issues, not like normal or anything throughout the years I have experimented with linux though.

1)entering fullscreen on VMware crashes linux sometimes (no Ctrl+Alt or Ctrl+Alt+F2 ect)
2)using a different monitor haults the virtual machine while other monitors do not (I have 4)
3)Java apps freeze and require moving the window offscreen (below the screen) to redraw
4)general linux freezing
5)glitch with xinerama that repeatedly teleports mouse between two monitors causing the system to be unusable (no Ctrl+Alt+F2 or anything either)

At first I thought they were all related to VMware but they may not be. I run VMware everyday for my slingbox and light EXE-ing when wine isnt an option. So I may not be asking for fixes to all these problems but whats going on? Ive seen linux installs last years and believed linux to not degrade.

Debian Multimedia :: KDE Very Slow Redraw On Radeon

Nov 29, 2010

redrawing windows in KDE is very, very sow (since 4.4 or so I guess, but maybe it was always like this). When I switch to a desktop running Kopete and Amarok, it takes like 2-3 seconds to redraw the applications. GTK apps are faster to redraw, although far from ideal. This happens both with the effects enabled as well as disabled. When the effects are enabled, it's faster, but still very slow.

When switching apps or desktops in Gnome with Compiz running, it's almost instantaneous... I don't think it's because of any particular effect like Blur, because I've disabled them all, though the compositing is up (e.g. the bar is transparent, but all other effects are off in KWin). On the other hand I have plenty of effects enabled in Compiz and it's still ways much faster.

I have ATI Radeon X1200 integrated card, using the radeon driver 1.6.13.2 (I'm not sure whether is it from experimental or Sid, but I don't think it matters, since the older versions were slow the same) without any particular configuration from my side (i.e. no xorg.conf).On my other computer with either quite powerful NVidia card or an Intel card the performance is the same in KWin and Compiz...

Debian Multimedia :: Jessie - LXDE Doesn't Shutdown Properly

May 19, 2015

I know the problem has been partly solved in this old thread [URL] .....

Now we have Jessie as stable, yet LXDE doesn't shutdown properly:

On the same computers, Wheezy LXDE shut down very fast

I installed Jessie from the netinstall image.

On a 2007 computer, it's like the old days with a Pentium II running some version of Puppy Linux or Slitaz. The system shuts down after a while but the computer remains on.

On a 2013 laptop, I added the line init=/bin/systemd in the Grub default file as advised on the old thread above. The laptop shuts down after a while, the system first, then the hard disk goes to sleep, then all the leds are off.

If I run the magic command, the computer shutdowns in a breeze, perhaps even quicker than good old Wheezy:

Code: Select all# systemctl poweroff

Now, is this still a systemd bug? Doesn't look like it since the systemctl command works. Is it an LXDE bug? Looks like it in a way - if the LXDE shutdown button enabled the systemctl poweroff command, I suppose the button would work?

Is there a way to make the LXDE shutdown button run the systemctl poweroff command?

I'm glad Wheezy is still with us because I wouldn't install Jessie for newbies — they'd think shutdown (through clicking on a button) is even worse than in Windows.

Debian Hardware :: Wheezy Doesn't Properly Support Proprietary Firmware For Wireless Card

Mar 17, 2015

I recently installed the XFCE spin of Debian (amd64) on my Lenovo L440. I tried installing it before, but apparently the 3.2 kernel that ships with Wheezy doesn't properly support the proprietary firmware for the wireless card, blah blah. So I wound up using Windows 8.1 for a bit, and then Fedora (boo). Anyway, with the wheezy-backports kernel (3.16.7-ckt4-3~bpo70+1) everything works like a charm. Everything, that is, apart from the sound card — the entire system is completely mute. Well, apart from the system beeper. I searched the forum and found another thread, but that guy was (for some reason) just running dwm — I figured XFCE might feature a more complete sound system. But maybe the output he gave will be useful in my case as well:

Code: Select alleirik@gerhardsen:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]

[code]...

I also tried running alsactl init (as root), which doesn't appear to have made any difference.

Fedora :: Doesn't Live Cd Have A Basic - Generic (like A Vga 640 X 480) Driver

Sep 26, 2009

I just recently acquired a PII 333 w/ 160M ram (I know, grossly underpowered for anything by today's standards) but mostly wanted it for internet & to use for printer / scanner & camera stuff. So, while checking it out I tried a few live cd's on it (fedora 10 & a ham version of puppy linux) the puppy worked just fine but the fedora "puked" when it got to the GUI (I had this happen with F11 on another computer) The thing that confuses me is, doesn't fedora's live cd have a basic, generic (like a vga 640 x 480) driver that SHOULD work with any video card & monitor or am I missing something here?

Ubuntu :: ALT+MiddleClick (resize Window) Doesn't Grab Foreground (top) Window

Jan 16, 2011

If you don't know, users are able to quickly resize windows using the "ALT+MiddleClick" key shortcut/combo. Basically, hold the ALT key, and mouse middle click and hold on a window. Move the mouse around, and it will resize the window for you.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1) Open a single Window.

2) Near the bottom-right-hand corner of the window, ALT+MiddleClick and drag. It should resize. Great. It works.

What Doesn't Work:

Now, the problem arises when you have multiple windows open on the desktop, they are "layered". i.e. you might have several windows open "behind" the one currently "up front". Example:

If I try to ALT+MiddleClick the "foreground window", it rarely actually resizes THAT window, and instead jumps one of the windows from behind to the front, and resizes that one instead!

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1) Open 3x gnome-terminal windows and say some nautilus window. Place them overtop one another. (like the above image)

2) Try to ALT+MiddleClick the foreground window.

3) Repeat this always trying to grab the foreground window.

For me, the window manager seems to bring some window from the background to the front! Desktop Recording of the Problem: [URL]

Running:

* Ubuntu 10.10
* compiz window manager (the problem does not occur with metacity)
* ATI Radeon RV770 (HD4870) w/ open source Radeon Driver (same problem w/ fglrx driver)
* Versions: [URL]

Debian :: Can't Get Basic Apps

Jun 2, 2011

I'm trying to get compiz setup but it is not having any affect at all. I installed it and went to the synaptic system manager and added all the compiz plugins that were there. I restarted several times before and after going to the synaptic system manager. It said installed successfully, however it has no effect so it isn't "on" whatsoever. I have watched ..... tutorials on how to set it up. It looked easy enough but did not work for me. I have tried commands from tutorials but I don't know enough or how to edit folder contents. I think they were old tutorials anyways, I am running the newest squeeze debian distro. The 3d desktop was one reason I wanted to try linux. If I can't get the basic apps like this to work then there is no reason for me to use linux.

Debian :: How To Use IPtables - Basic Firewall Setup

May 16, 2010

Recently I have been working on iptables and trying to understand how to use it. Here's a little script I have written to setup a basic firewall for myself:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
if [ `id -u` -ne 0 ]; then
echo "You need root privilege"
exit 1
fi

PROG=/sbin/iptables
$PROG -F
function sethttp {
echo "Opening http port..."
$PROG -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
}

function sethttps {
echo "Opening https port..."
$PROG -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT
}

function settorrent {
echo "Opening torrent port..."
$PROG -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 52413 -j ACCEPT
}

while getopts "hst" option; do
case "$option" in
h) sethttp;;
s) sethttps;;
t) settorrent;;
*) echo "DOH!"
esac
done

$PROG -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
$PROG -A OUTPUT -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT
$PROG -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
$PROG -A OUTPUT -o lo -j ACCEPT
$PROG -A INPUT -j DROP
$PROG -A FORWARD -j REJECT
echo "Done setting up the firewall! Enjoy :)"
exit 0

OK, this can take 3 arguments that open ports 80, 443 and 52413. And at the end, some default rules are applied. But here's the thing I don't understand:
if I don't give the argument for port 80, I can still view web pages... and also, when I remove the line:

Code:
$PROG -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

Whether I say it to open port 80 or not, I can't view any web pages.

Fedora :: Nouveau Doesn't Suspend To RAM Properly?

Dec 7, 2009

I just wanted to check, I'm using nouveau on Fedora 12 with the latest updates and each time I wake the machine from suspend, the fan on my XFX 8800GT goes to full speed and stays there. I've read some nouveau stuff and they say that nouveau doesn't control the fan speed, so I think the card is running in a safety mode after wake up where it runs the fan at full speed to be safe. The only suggestion I saw for fan speed and nouveau was to use nvclock to manually adjust the fan but that sounds dangerous to me. I think I'll just go to the closed rpmfusion driver then if this is the case.

This usually happens 1/4 times when i boot so i didnt pay much attention and would just restart the computer. However just 5 minutes ago i had to boot my computer 12 times to get it to boot into the desktop.

Debian Multimedia :: Basic Networking - Referring To Computers By Name

May 16, 2011

Sorry if this is a dumb question, there's a lot about networking that I don't get yet. I've got two computers using the same wireless router. They both get their IP addresses via DHCP from the router (I assume). If I want to connect from one machine to another, I can use the IP address (which works), but it's a pain checking what the IP address is, I guess it depends on which one connects first? So it might work today but tomorrow the IP addresses are reversed and the same command wouldn't work.

What I'd like to do is just refer to the other computer by name, but of course I haven't got a DNS server just for these two computers, and I don't think the router can do it (can it?) so is there a way to do it? Is it really just a case of switching off DHCP and giving each computer a fixed and unique IP address, and then entering some name in the hosts file for the two computers? Although then there's nothing to guarantee that the name in the hosts file actually matches the hostname of the computer at that IP I suppose.
