Fedora :: Doesn't Live Cd Have A Basic - Generic (like A Vga 640 X 480) Driver

Sep 26, 2009

I just recently acquired a PII 333 w/ 160M ram (I know, grossly underpowered for anything by today's standards) but mostly wanted it for internet & to use for printer / scanner & camera stuff. So, while checking it out I tried a few live cd's on it (fedora 10 & a ham version of puppy linux) the puppy worked just fine but the fedora "puked" when it got to the GUI (I had this happen with F11 on another computer) The thing that confuses me is, doesn't fedora's live cd have a basic, generic (like a vga 640 x 480) driver that SHOULD work with any video card & monitor or am I missing something here?

Hardware :: USB Generic Serial Driver, And FTDI Single Port Driver As A Module, But It Still Isn't Getting Recognized?

Feb 4, 2011

My gentoo laptop doesn't have a serial port, so I got a usb-serial (RS-232) adapter from ebay. However when I plug it in, the only thing dmesg mentiones is: Code:usb 5-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2I've tried to look for a kernel driver in "make menuconfig" by pressing "/" and typing 232. Nothing about RS-232. Device Drivers -> Character drivers -> Serial drivers has 8250 and UART as a module. Device Drivers -> USB support -> USB serial converter support has in-kernel: USB generic serial driver, and FTDI Single port driver as a module, but it still isn't getting recognized. Is there some module i forgot to enable, or do i have to download a separate module from somewhere?

Is someone as ever configured this type of printer ? How he/she did to create the printer queue ?

Anyway I went to System to add a monitor and being that my NEC LCD monitor isn't listed I installed the generic 1280X1024 driver. I re-booted the computer and it gets to a command line. No errors are given. So, I log in and I still have no errors and it is still in command line waiting? for me to use another command that I have no idea of what it might want. When I had issues (years ago) with Mandriva I was able to type in init 3 and I could work out my bug. I tried that with Buntu and I got bashed, it didn't recognize the command. Other than this the system has been good.

Ubuntu :: Menu Bars Are A Basic Light Gray After Installing Graphics Card Driver

Feb 7, 2011

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit.

It came up saying I could install 2 proprietary drivers, one for my WiFi adapter (which works perfectly) and one for my graphics card - a Sapphire AIT Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card. The driver is called ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. Before installing this driver I was unable to have Extra Visual Effects in Appearances. However after installing (and restarting) the menu bars are now in a basic light gray mode, rather than the sleek Ubuntu black. - Although Extra Visual Effects does now work. I've tried rebooting, and I've had a look around in ATI "Catalyst Control Center" but nothing has worked so far.

Does anybody know what this windows mode is, how to change it back to normal and why it's doing it in the first place?

Below is a screenshot of my computer: [URL]

This is also the first time I've installed Ubuntu on my computer, and am keen for it to work.

When we get through what I recommend you should chose "local host".

Fedora Installation :: Software Update - Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) - Nvidia Driver Doesn't Work

Sep 1, 2010

Fedora (2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64) I installed that update, during the installation process it said that it had to remove three packages, one of them was kmod nvidia for the old kernel (Fedora (2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64))After the update finished installing the new kernel, I restarted the system and Nvidia did not load. (I assume because Update manager removed the old nvidia? But I also assumed that a new version would be installed automatically?)I received the following Boot messages:

Code:

Entering non-interactive startup
Starting monitoring for VG vg_user1: 3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg_user1" monitored

[code]....

I'm confused, if Update Manager removed kmod nvidia, then why does yum say it is installed? And why doesn't the new kernel update work with that version? Or should I install a driver version for that particular kernel? I've read while searching that I need to install a kmod-nvidia for that particual kernel version and that I should login to my previous kernel until that happens, is that the problem I'm having?

Why don't rpmfusion and fedoraproject release the kmod-nvidia and kernel updates at the same time to avoid problems such as this? Does anyone know how long does it usually take for rpmfusion to release the new kmod-nvidia driver for the latest kernel?

Fedora :: X Doesn't Seem To Start After Kernel And Nvidia Driver Update?

Oct 29, 2010

I'm running Fedora 13 x64 and updated the kernel to the latest version (2.6.34.7-56 to 2.6.34.7-61). I use the proprietary nvidia drivers (currently 260.19.12) so I had to compile the kernel module against the new kernel sources and reinstall the driver. The process was apparently successful, but when I try to start X nothing happens, it's as if the computer had been suspended, my monitor acts like it isn't receiving any input. I have full runlevel 3 access, and the system seems pretty much fine up to that point. Nvidia's own sanity tests which are built into the installer reported no problems with my driver.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: RTL8191SE Driver On Compaq Presario CQ62 Doesn't Work With XP Driver

Oct 23, 2010

No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.

However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.

I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.

Fedora Hardware :: HP Printer - HPLIP Driver In The Repo Doesn't Work Correctly

Apr 22, 2010

I recently had problems with my HP printer in Fedora 12, where as I never had a problem with it in any other distrubution.... For some reason, the HPLIP driver in the repo doesn't work correctly... I don't know why... but I kept getting errors with "error: Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again."

I tried every suggestion I found... which was installing extra dependencies, disabling firewall, disabling SELinux and a whole bunch of other stuff... but nothing worked... THEN finally I decided to use the HPLIP driver from the HP website... it was a .run file... and I executed it, and my printer has worked perfect eversince..... my question is.... has anybody successfully installed their hp printer from the hplip driver in the repo's..??? I don't know why it didn't work for me, and i've seen other fedora users complain of the same thing? maybe theres something wrong with the package? or its not pulling in a needed dependency? I don't know...

Fedora :: Generic PHP CL Backup Script?

Jul 11, 2010

Here's a PHP5 script I wrote to do automated backups from my main hard drive, to a separate backup hard drive. I run it overnight using a cron job.I tried to write it so it is clonable and easily modified for making backups of your system. Please take it and modify it to suit your needs. This script will copy the contents of a directory to the backup drive. It creates a unique directory backup name, based on the current time. When there are more thanNUMBER_REQUIRED_BACKUPS in the backed-up directory $BACKUP_GROUPNAME, the oldest backup will be deleted. This allows you to keep n number of the latest backups. You will need to create the $BACKUP_GROUPNAME directory on the backup drive, so the script has somewhere to write the backed-up directories to.PHP Code:

#! /usr/bin/php<?php# lastupdated: Sun Jul 11 20:54:29 BST 2010# PHP script to backup the contents of /etc directory# to /backup/system/fedora/12/etc#
