Debian :: Enable 3Dnow And Other CPU Related Features?
May 2, 2010
how, and if, I enable 3Dnow, and other CPU related features?
I'm not having any problems or anything to that effect. I am only curious. Is this something that's automatically done? Is this something I must do during compile and install of applications?
haunted@haunted-desktop:~$ sudo grep flags /proc/cpuinfo
flags: fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow
If this is something I must enable manually per application, then for example, if I wanted it enabled for FlightGear, how would I go about doing that?

I'm looking for the best iTunes alternative that has almost these features:
- being able to edit the track's name/album (songs in the iPod)
- adjusting volume of tracks
I'm currently using Rhythmbox. I have tried Exaile and Amarok just doesn't work for me. I can't recall what made me turn away from Banshee, too. I'm not really into Wine so installing iTunes itself is not viable.

I'm used to write simple programs on codeblock which run on consle. i.e.console applications. When I try to compile programs which need graphic features, I get stuck as many libraries 9especially header files) are not in MINGW/include folder so I have to search on the net and add those files into include. My question is, by default, to enable graphics features on code block which "folder" should I download and incorporate it into codeblock? I tried to follow examples on glut, opengl, that is you have to download glut and add it somewhere on codeblock. Now I just want to have graphics functionality especially which need graphics.h file, searched on the net and find that sometime you have to download BGI, sometimes you have to download SDL, etc.
I hope you get the picture of what I'm trying to understand, it seems that by default codeblock doesn't come with graphic functionality e.g.graphics.h file, now what shall I download, and where do I add it so that I can draw graphs etc on codeblock. [codeblock has /include folder in C: Program FilesCodeBlocksMinGWinclude], now whenever I download new feature e.g. glut has its own version of include, lib folders etc. Is it necessary to add those include, lib on inlude, lib of C:Program FilesCodeBlocksMinGW? or it should work on its own original path? suppose I download glut on C:Program FilesCodeBlocksGlut. Now, what folder should I download to have graphics on codeblock?...

I tend to stay on for long time. My machine is a Fujitsu T4310 tablet. I have got all tablet features previously working properly when I was on Isadora Mint. After installing LMDE to my surprise basic features of the tablet simply worked out of the box but I'm missing a few important features like multitouch, screen rotate and buttons in tablet mode.
As far as my experience with Isadora, it needed a driver called "fjbtndrv", but I couldn't find it in the repos, moreover, I think it might need some tweeks to get it behaving properly. I found some refferences but it refers to other ubuntu based distros, which I can't use of course.
p.s. prefere a solution other than compiling it myself, it looks scary and has lots of dependencies.

I just upgraded my sid install and after shutting down X I don't see any text on the console.
I can still type in commands so at least I can shutdown the computer, by typing in the commands blindly.
I've also noticed that my xserver keybindings have changed again, too
It's not self explainatory howto switch out of an xsession to the console.
I'm not quite sure if anything else has changed with this new set of drivers and I guess only time will tell.
So I'm hoping that the next xserver package updates will bring new features, functionality and foundation.

I was recently pushed back towards linux after spending nearly a decade in a windows only environment and I'm finding myself struggling. The reason for the change is that we purchased Kaspersky and the mail gateway is only available under linux. They advised Debian and Exim.
The crux of the problem is that I have a working debian server running with exim4 and kaspersky to act as a gateway mail server but it's not checking inbound mail against the internal servers address list. For this I need to add ldap support to the exim package but I'm not sure how to do this - it seems silly that I should have to start over at this stage.
Full details:= I didn't have too much trouble installing and configuring a debian 64bit server for our network, adding exim4 and getting it all set up to work, then several weeks of hot fix releases and "oh, it shouldn't do that" passed as we attempted to get the Kaspersky software operating properly. During that time I learned that the kaspersky software does not provide a function to check inbound emails against the internal server. Previously we did this with an LDAP lookup under the Sophos Puremessage software that Kaspersky replaced. Without this function the MTA sends out a lot of backscatter that results in the server being put on blocklists and that effects business. Kaspersky tell me this is something I need to set the MTA software (exim4) to do so I've looked that up and it appears that step 1 is to install exim with ldap support... but I've already installed and configured exim without ldap support. So I'm not sure if I have to start over by removing exim, install over the top or what. Also if I do add ldap support or install exim-heavy over what I have will I need to reconfigure everything I've done so far?
as I said, it's been 10 years since I used linux and even then it was fairly basic sendmail and apache stuff.

I am testing LXDE on my test-laptop and it looks quite nice and fast. I am thinking of switching DE from Gnome.
My question: are there features in Gnome that are missing in LXDE? I can not think of any, so far. The only thing I miss so far is a possibility to edit the menu, as the menu is huge

I just blindly install 'java' in GNU/Linux Debian SID -- so I could use it as a plugin for iceweasel -- Unfortunately, things didn't work as expected. I was used to Debian's APT to take care of things for me as it had done for more years than I could remember. (Being a desktop user/programmer and a beginner system network admin). I want a clean install of java plugin for iceweasel. So I want to remove completely all java related packages --
How do I know which is which and if they are safe to remove without affecting any other part of the system? Now, to install -- what do I need to install in order for iceweasel to have the Java plugin and let java work as it should? I prefer from the Debian package. But if it doesn't work, I'll accept JRE from the java site and install them myself.

I've got this weird problem: when I reboot my Debian 8.3 server, I have to run through the crypto unlocking processes for my encrypted volumes a few times before I actually get to a login screen. The operation times out 85% of the time, leaving me to reboot and try over and over until the system is happy.
Here's my partitioning setup (manually partitioned at install):
/boot: 500 MB, EXT2, nodev, nosuid, noexec
/tmp: 2 GB, EXT2, AES-256/xts-plain64 with RANDOM KEY
swap: 2.5 GB, AES-256/xts-plain 64 with RANDOM KEY
/: 35 GB, EXT4, AES-256/xts-plain 64 with PASSPHRASE
/var: 35 GB, EXT4, AES-256/xts-plain 64 with PASSPHRASE
/home: 45 GB, EXT4, AES-256/xts-plain 64 with PASSPHRASE
Here's the output from journalctl -b -p 3:
Code: Select allDate and time | server name | systemd[1]: Timed out waiting for device dev-sda5.device
Date and time | server name | systemd[1]: Dependency failed for Cryptography Setup for sda5_crypt
Date and time | server name | systemd[1]: Dependency failed for Encrypted Volumes
Date and time | server name | systemd[1]: Dependency failed for dev-mapper-sda5_crypt.device
Date and time | server name | systemd[1]: Dependency failed for /tmp
[Code] ....
I had the same problem in previous builds where I chose Twofish instead of AES, and I was hoping that the timeouts would be fixed by switching to AES as my CPU has the AES instruction set. Obviously that didn't make a damn bit of difference.
What am I doing wrong, or what should I change in my setup? The encryption is a requirement. Could the problem be caused by something as stupid as using a RANDOM KEY instead of a PASSPHRASE on /tmp and swap?
Debian 8.3 as OS version.

I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Just installed 6.0.1 on my computer with a GA-H55N-USB3. It seems to have a Realtek ALC892 on it, and six 3.5mm jacks out and SPDIF too. I installed alsa and sound came from the 3.5mm jack, but I want SPDIF. I don't know what approach to make to enable it and that's the problem. SPDIF just have two modes in alsamixer, "00" or "MM" (muted). Master and PCM are set to 100. The SPDIF connecter is'nt even lit. How to enable it? I tried "alsactl init" and then rebooting, it made no difference.

How do I enable networking in Debian? I just installed Debian on my iMac 7.1 (which works perfectly well with ubuntu - but I'd like to get away from ubuntu because it seems to be targeting teenagers now which is only going to get worse). I used the latest daily build of the netinstall CD and had the network configured with DHCP, but now I find I have to enter my root password (login password will not do) to activate the network.
Of course, coming from ubuntu I disabled root login during install. I have to say, so far my impression of Debian isn't so good. For starters, to be able to boot at all I had to look for my refit CD which I hadn't used in ages because I don't need it in ubuntu. Also scrolling is wonky, like with the realtime kernel in ubuntu. How do I enable root login, or more to the point, how do I get by in Debian without enabling root login? I am not a systematic person at all, and one day I'm bound to forget that I'm root when I go online.

I'm currently running 9.10 and I'm wondering if it isn't possible to turn certain features on or off. For example the dock that appears at the bottom of the screen, I don't dig it but it isn't under System ---> Preferences ---> Startup applications. Also when I connect/disconnect my modem, can I change the size of the notification window and how long it stays on the screen? Another is how to stop everything I plug in appearing on the desktop. I prefer an uncluttered desktop and would like to open plug-in devices through Places.
