Is if an existing option for me to disable the copy-on-write features of the MMU? I'm doing this for a project. I do not see this on the config menus (or I did not find the correct place). If it's not an existing option, do anyone know how can I change the kernel so that it can do non-copy-on-write fork?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Xubuntu 9.10 on a nettop as a X11 terminal.In order to do that, I created a custom session script that runs some commands instead of starting xfce4-session and the likes from GDM. When I boot this nettop, GDM automatically logs a dummy user in (called "test"), and runs a script that does "xhost +", and opens a small X Terminal to keep the X session alive, while some other computer sets the DISPLAY environment variable to point to <nettop>:0 and runs gnome-session.
My trouble is that after 10 minutes of idle, the screen is blanked(power saving I presume).
I tried to add "xset -dpms" and "setterm -blank 0 -powersave off" to my startup script, in vain. I want my power saving options to be configured on the remote computer, not the nettop. How could I prevent X/GDM/Whoever from blanking the screen ?
I've been using Debian since the early days of Lenny being testing as OS on the same Computer. Its a Acer Aspire Notebook with switches for wireless and bluetooth. While booting Lenny my wireless and bluetooth stayed off as long as I didn't switch them on. But since squeeze they get activated ( you can see it by looking at the LED's ) the moment after the grub screen. I now do have to turn bluetooth and wireless off by hand everytime which is quite annoying since I mostly use eth0.
how to disable bluetooth and wireless per default in a way I can simply turn them back on by using the switch?
I can't connect using wireless connection because it is disable (the light indicator is off) after I pass the grub, but it works fine in win 7. does anyone know how to enable it?lspci output said my wireless module is broadcom 4313.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI tend to stay on for long time. My machine is a Fujitsu T4310 tablet. I have got all tablet features previously working properly when I was on Isadora Mint. After installing LMDE to my surprise basic features of the tablet simply worked out of the box but I'm missing a few important features like multitouch, screen rotate and buttons in tablet mode.
As far as my experience with Isadora, it needed a driver called "fjbtndrv", but I couldn't find it in the repos, moreover, I think it might need some tweeks to get it behaving properly. I found some refferences but it refers to other ubuntu based distros, which I can't use of course.
p.s. prefere a solution other than compiling it myself, it looks scary and has lots of dependencies.
I just upgraded my sid install and after shutting down X I don't see any text on the console.
I can still type in commands so at least I can shutdown the computer, by typing in the commands blindly.
I've also noticed that my xserver keybindings have changed again, too
It's not self explainatory howto switch out of an xsession to the console.
I'm not quite sure if anything else has changed with this new set of drivers and I guess only time will tell.
So I'm hoping that the next xserver package updates will bring new features,functionality and foundation.

I want try clean compiled linux kernel on system, I want see what can I do with clean linux kernel. I want just on clean partitioned hdd, put grub and linux kernel and then boot it up, so what then I get? Can I input commands like ls?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was recently pushed back towards linux after spending nearly a decade in a windows only environment and I'm finding myself struggling. The reason for the change is that we purchased Kaspersky and the mail gateway is only available under linux. They advised Debian and Exim.
The crux of the problem is that I have a working debian server running with exim4 and kaspersky to act as a gateway mail server but it's not checking inbound mail against the internal servers address list. For this I need to add ldap support to the exim package but I'm not sure how to do this - it seems silly that I should have to start over at this stage.
Full details:= I didn't have too much trouble installing and configuring a debian 64bit server for our network, adding exim4 and getting it all set up to work, then several weeks of hot fix releases and "oh, it shouldn't do that" passed as we attempted to get the Kaspersky software operating properly. During that time I learned that the kaspersky software does not provide a function to check inbound emails against the internal server. Previously we did this with an LDAP lookup under the Sophos Puremessage software that Kaspersky replaced. Without this function the MTA sends out a lot of backscatter that results in the server being put on blocklists and that effects business. Kaspersky tell me this is something I need to set the MTA software (exim4) to do so I've looked that up and it appears that step 1 is to install exim with ldap support... but I've already installed and configured exim without ldap support. So I'm not sure if I have to start over by removing exim, install over the top or what. Also if I do add ldap support or install exim-heavy over what I have will I need to reconfigure everything I've done so far?
as I said, it's been 10 years since I used linux and even then it was fairly basic sendmail and apache stuff.
I am testing LXDE on my test-laptop and it looks quite nice and fast. I am thinking of switching DE from Gnome.
My question: are there features in Gnome that are missing in LXDE? I can not think of any, so far. The only thing I miss so far is a possibility to edit the menu, as the menu is huge
I've noticed in pulseaudio have many options to make my sound discoverable via upnp/dlna server. I've got a ps3 and a Pinnacle Soundbridge, suitable for this protocol and working fine with mt-daapd or ushare.But I would like to use mplayer and making the sound available to my devices. I've activated the options in Pulseaudio (paprefs) but can't play music in my client device and I can't see the server in the lan.this is my config:sound Preferences

I've had a host of problems since upgrading to 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so let's deal with these 1 at a time.
I've got a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion G60 laptop. Next to the power button is a handy wireless on/off button. This has always worked well with previous editions (9.04,through 10.10). first press toggles the wireless off, second press toggles it on.
Not so in 11.04. The toggle off works great, first time. But, it will not toggle back on. Not after any number of tries, not after restarting, not after booting into other OS's (9.10 and Vista) re-enabling it there and then booting back into Narwhal. to further complicate the issue, this feature bypass the network manager, so toggling the wireless off by the switch leaves me showing no wireless adapter in the network manager. I also restarted, switched from Unity to a Gnome session, but the issue still persists.
As my only network options are wireless, this has become a substantial inconvenience.

EDIT: so the network util is actually saying "wireless disabled by hardware switch". Also noticed it I enable it in 9.10, reboot to 11.04 (where I inevitably fail to re-enable it), then reboot into 9.10, it will initially be disabled. The key difference is in 9.10 I have the ability to enable wifi using the hardware button. It seems that 11.04 is remembering that wireless is disabled between boots. Is there a place it might be storing this value? If so, I may be able simply to set the value as enabled, since toggling that silly button isn't working.

My laptop is Dell Inspiron 1440 with Dell wireless. I use broadcom-wl on Fedora 13 and it works fine. Last week I updated Fedora including the kernel from 2.6.34.6-47 to 2.6.34.6-54, Fedora can not "see" wireless anymore (there is no item related wireless on the right-click menu of the Network Manager icon, of course I can not connect to Internet via wireless)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't use wireless on my desktop so i would like it permanently disabled...each time i boot up it's back and receving up to 80mb of data from an unknown connection via wireless (i dont use wireless) so, to avoid any weird connections to my neighboors house or some kid hacking the neighborhood driving by with a wireless router in his truck i'd like to permanently turn off wireless. this is kind of funny because i had a hard time getting wireless to work on my laptop, but this is my desktop where i do not want it. i looked it up and your forum back in 2007 said to type in iwconfig in the shell then get the nickname of the wireless card then to black list the wireless card. i did this but it didn't work, so what do i do now? i have ubuntu 9.10

It can't connect to my wireless network - it just asks for my WPA2 passphrase over and over again. Luckily, I have a USB adapter that connects just fine. But I'd like to disable the PCI card so it will stop asking for my wireless password and just use the USB adapter.
Disabling ALL wireless connections or deleting the wireless network both won't work because I need to use the USB adapter.

this shuts down the first card but i have to do this manually after every restart. one thing: don't come with "deactivate in bios" - i knoe this but playing around in bios everytime i switch between windows and linux is no option. So how can i prohibit permanently that knetworkmanager uses the first one (wlan0)? putting in some place of suseconfigs a rmmod <driver>? where? /etc/sysconfig ??
I have a HP laptop with an onboard wifi that uses ipw3945 driver. It gets configured on boot and I can use knetworkmanager to connect to a wifi network. But I want to use an usb wifi adapter that works with the zd1211rw driver, I had use it in the past but I don't use linux since like 1 year, I forgot how to do it.
What I want is to disable the board that uses ipw3945 and use the usb adapter. I remember I used modprobe zd1211rw before, I tried it and it doesn't show any warning/error so I think I have the module, should I remove ipw3945 before loading zd1211rw? After using modprobe zd1211rw, can I use Yast or how do I configure it so I can use it with knetworkmanager?
I use this Thinkpad mostly for work while traveling, and wireless connectivity is not a big issue for me. Battery life is a big issue, however. I've just converted from Mandriva. With that, I was able to disable the wireless adapter so that it did nothing at all on boot - and only started on my instruction. This made a dramatic difference to battery life! How to achieve this in Ubuntu? The file attached gives all the info about my wireless set-up as it stands.

I have loaded ndiswrapper and managed to get my D-Link usb dongle working (this is wireless N) but I need to disable my laptops built in rtl8187B wireless (they both connect at log on).
In Windows I just turn of the wireless switch but in Ubuntu this disables all wireless. I think I have to black list the rtl8178b driver.
I recently bought a new nettop and installed Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop. Unfortunately the on-board wlan is kind of crap so I bought a USB Wireless stick and since that stick has a pretty recent chipset ndis was needed to get the USB stick to work as wlan1.
The issue is I want to disable the on-board wlan (wlan0). The BIOS does not offer that option so it needs to be done in the OS I guess. My question is what is the best way of doing so? I've read something about blacklisting or editing 10-wlan.rules but I am unsure what the best place is and what to put there.

That once an ethernet cable is connected the wireless will be disabled and once the ethernet is disconnecter the wireless will be reconnected.
Using Ubuntu Maverick 64-bit.
My laptop is running Ubuntu 10.04. It has both wired and wireless LAN interfaces. I would like to have a startup script that would disable the wireless NIC if there is connectivity on the wired NIC. Does anyone have such a script, or advice on how to write one?

I am doing some experiments comparing the performance of wireless under 3 different cases:
(i) without media sensing (carrier sensing).
(ii) with media sensing but no RTS/CTS
(iii) with media sensing and RTS/CTS
I know RTS/CTS can be controlled by iwconfig interface rts {N|auto|fixed|off}
However, what about media sensing? Can it be disabled? If yes, how?
