Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Seem To Find A List & Description Of All The New Features?
Oct 11, 2010I'm very happy with 10.04 but want to take a look at 10.10. I can't seem to find a list & description of all the new features.

View 6 RepliesI just spent an hour at Google and the OpenWRT site looking for something that might be called a "List of Features." I did not find one.
I did find this: url but it is not an official project document so I'm left with as many questions as answers.
I know that OpenWRT uses dynamic packages for feature deployment, but I'd expect some sort of grid page -- package vs. edition -- or similar so that one might have some idea what is available to choose from.

I know that part of the Linux sociology involves some amount of "you just gotta know." However, unless one is a networking maven or wonk one does not know enough about network features to state which features one wants ... much less know what name to use in search or discussion.
I have searched all over. I cannot find any info on the description of the Fedora mirror release directory structure and the reason for having a "Fedora" and "Everything" directory? Yes I looked at [URL] I mostly work with the Red Hat 5.x. The Fedora release software is kept on a mirror and the DVD release as, (using i386 release):

Ubuntu is perfect for me, except that i have to dual boot sometimes to windows 7 for the one application that wont run in a virtual environment (LockDown Browser, and occasionally onenote). Except, i cant find tablet control features in Ubuntu, to change input devices (the touchscreen is awful, but I cant turn off the option to use finger as an input device. Also, when i boot to windows 7, the mouse track pad/left and right click doesn't work (they work in Ubuntu)? The keyboard does, and so does my stylus (which I have to use as a substitute)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running openSUSE 11.2 x86_64. I am processing work units from Folding@home on this pc. Strange thing is, when I actually leave the pc alone and working on folding@home, my performance actually drops instead of going up as I would expect. I believe there is some kind of powersaving feature I cant find or something else that's hurting quite a bit on the PC. I am talking about maybe 20-30% performance loss. PC in question is: Athlon II 630.
Already deactivated Cool'n'Quiet from the BIOS. Got no fresh ideas on what could cause this weird behaviour.
Update:
Code:
[22:05:52] Completed 260000 out of 500000 steps (52%)
[22:18:28] Completed 265000 out of 500000 steps (53%)
[22:30:41] Completed 270000 out of 500000 steps (54%)
[22:40:20] Completed 275000 out of 500000 steps (55%)
[22:48:16] Completed 280000 out of 500000 steps (56%)
PC was "idle" working on folding and I came back at 54%, see the huge difference? Frames were taking about 13 minutes each when "idle". When I am using the computer, frames are done within 8 minutes.

I am trying to use TOMCAT 7 from eclipse Helios and I seem to not to be able to see Tomcat's browser visual menu.
I receive the following message: description The requested resource (/) is not available.
I have started Tomcat from the shell(UBUNTU 10.04) and it works.
So I am still getting use to Ubuntu as far as when the new OS comes out. I am use to when Windows did a release every 3-5 years. So last year I install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and already 10.10 is out. My understanding though 10.10 is not a LTS so should I upgrade? Or will mine automatically upgrade to that version? Is there any real new features to 10.10 that I am missing out on? I can't do anything for another month and a half for the fact I am on deployment in the US Navy but I am highly thinking about moving up.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was recently pushed back towards linux after spending nearly a decade in a windows only environment and I'm finding myself struggling. The reason for the change is that we purchased Kaspersky and the mail gateway is only available under linux. They advised Debian and Exim.
The crux of the problem is that I have a working debian server running with exim4 and kaspersky to act as a gateway mail server but it's not checking inbound mail against the internal servers address list. For this I need to add ldap support to the exim package but I'm not sure how to do this - it seems silly that I should have to start over at this stage.
Full details:= I didn't have too much trouble installing and configuring a debian 64bit server for our network, adding exim4 and getting it all set up to work, then several weeks of hot fix releases and "oh, it shouldn't do that" passed as we attempted to get the Kaspersky software operating properly. During that time I learned that the kaspersky software does not provide a function to check inbound emails against the internal server. Previously we did this with an LDAP lookup under the Sophos Puremessage software that Kaspersky replaced. Without this function the MTA sends out a lot of backscatter that results in the server being put on blocklists and that effects business. Kaspersky tell me this is something I need to set the MTA software (exim4) to do so I've looked that up and it appears that step 1 is to install exim with ldap support... but I've already installed and configured exim without ldap support. So I'm not sure if I have to start over by removing exim, install over the top or what. Also if I do add ldap support or install exim-heavy over what I have will I need to reconfigure everything I've done so far?
as I said, it's been 10 years since I used linux and even then it was fairly basic sendmail and apache stuff.
I am having some problems installing Fedora 15 64-bit. I use the install DVD. I have an AMD Phenom and a NVidia 8600GTS. When I install using the normal method, my screen freezes somewhere in the settings screen for choosing the computer name. If I use the basic video driver for installing I have no problem. However after everything is installed, and Fedora starts, Gnome says that it failed to start and some features are not available.
I found some information at [URL] that I tried. However after installing kmod-nvidia and rebooting I no longer see any graphical display. A lot of text is on the screen without any error, but no x-windows appears. What can I do to install Fedora correctly and have a good working system? Is the 32-bit version easier to get it working? How can you recover from a system that does not start? What I could do to recover from it.
Ive seen some fixes for this but they all seem to be specific to the particular user's sources.list . . . ..

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have hard drive with several thousand photos. These photos are in different formats, some are tif some jpg some raw (cr2). These files are in dozens of directories. What I want to do is produce a list of all the files, in all of the directories, sorted by the file name (not sorting on the path), listing the location, file name, size and date created.
For instance I may have a file called photo1.jpg in /photos/pics/
I may also have a file called photo1.cr2 in /photos/misc/ and a file called photo1.tif in /photos/processed/summer/.
I would like a text file that would look like this:
/photos/misc/photo1.cr2 2536658 2010-07-09 13:17
/photos/pics/photo1.jpg 320046 2010-07-07 14:47
/photos/processed/summer/photo1.tif 234456689 2010-07-10 09:22
Of course I want it to do this for all of the photos. I pretty sure that there is a way to do this with a minimum amount of work. I have no problem with using the command line.
I searched the forum and didn't find any threads that seemed to answer this question. I have a large directory of files, and dozens of subdirectories on a remote box I have ssh access to. I need a subset of these files copied to another folder.
Example:
directories
parent
-sub1
-sub2
-sub3
files I want (the files are all the same format, but some have extensions and others dont)
1100
1215
1322
1442
1500
1512
Unfortunately, I need a lot of files, and plan to do this on a regular basis (the files I need will be different each time) I was thinking it would be nice to be able to put the filenames in a text file (one filename per line) and use the find command to copy the files (I don't necessarily know which subdirectory the file will be in).
