Ubuntu :: 9.10 - JGR Partly Broken - Features Don't Work
Feb 9, 2010
JGR still works -sort of. That is R works through JGR, but many of the nice features of JGR don't work. Notably, the object browser and package manager do not work, and the function hinting (pop up window showing arguments accepted by a function) dont work either.> JGR :: package.manager()
Error in JGR :: package.manager : package 'JGR' has no name space and is not on the search path
> object.browser()
Error: could not find function "object.browser"
>
As far as I can tell, this occured on upgrade to 9.10. I've tried using different Java environments, but no real success. I wonder if I should just go for a removal and reinstall of R and JGR?

I configured a PPTP server on Ubuntu 10.10. It works fine! Sort of. My MacBook running OS X 10.6 connects fine. But my iPhone can't seem to connect! The iPhone settings seem to be correct.
Here is the output of the Ubuntu syslog when I try to connect with the iPhone:

I attempted to move my system from a fully functioning Lenny to Squeeze, and the upgrade is only partly done. I was using my Wlan connection, but it went away during the process, and won't wake up. The box is nowhere near a wired LAN.
I now have the latest kernel (uname -r ==> 2.6.32-5-686) The old Gnome GUI still functions. On re-boot, the old grub still does its thing successfully. The question is, since I have lost the wireless, can I install the firmware from a USB thumb-drive somehow? lspci ==> RaLink RT2561/RT61
So it looks like I need the package "firmware-ralink" to make the Wlan active once more. I have internet access from several other PC's using "another" OS, so I could download the the firmware and place it on a thumb-drive, but I don't know how to proceed from there. I may need additional packages as well, so please comment.

I've been running Ubuntu 9.10 on the notebook for a week. The OpenSuSE 11.2 install goes fine, but on first boot it only goes 8-9 seconds into the bootup and hangs. Sometimes I can get it to boot by adding "acpi=off" to the FAILSAFE options.
To be fair, I seemed to have an intermittent problem with Ubuntu 9.10 in a very similar way... But it was temporary, I have not had it since around the time I ran updates. I never needed acpi=off. Appears to have the newest BIOS. Several items on the "firmware test" on the CD boot display "fail".

This question is somewhat open ended, so I'll describe the specific issue, what I want to accomplish in general, and what I tried to do. It'd be a little long, but hopefully not too daunting. For quite a while my approach to multi-OS boots has been to install each OS to a separate disk. When I want to boot a specific OS I change the boot drive in the BIOS. I find this convenient for several reasons, but mostly because I don't get boot manager conflicts. If I remove a disk or change the OS on it, this doesn't affect the booting of other OS's.
Note that when I say multi-OS, this meant until now multiple versions of Windows. I've occasionally tried some linux distros on VirtualBox, but now I want to do a full install, and see if I can use it as a main OS. (What prompted this was the recent release of Wine 1.2 and the fact that my new job doesn't involve any Direct3D or DDI work. I've always been partial to the open source movement, but I'm also fine with Windows and never before felt I could make the move without losing key abilities). My plan was (still is, if I can get it to work) to use Linux for everyday e-mail, web browsing and such, play Windows games over Wine, and install Windows 7 in VirtualBox for Windows development.I currently have two disks, one with my main Vista x64 installation, and the other with a Vista x86 installation which I used for my previous job and I no longer need. This is the disk I want to use for the Linux installation. It has a lot of partitions but quite a bit of free space (since I copied a 80GB disk and 250GB disk into a 500GB disk and haven't taken advantage of the extra space). My first choice of distro was Linux Mint, since it's known to be friendly to new users, and I like the software installer on it. I installed Linux Mint in the past in VirtualBox, and the latest version also installed fine, and I found installation instructions explaining how to provide my own partitions, but the installation failed during the "configuring hardware" stage. If you're interested, more details are available in this thread on the Linux Mint forums. I didn't get any reply to that thread.
I thought then that I'd try openSUSE 11.3. The live CD looked usable enough, but when I tried to install I couldn't tell how to make sure that I don't get a boot manager which will try to give me access to the Windows versions on the disks. I don't want this, and what I'm really afraid of is that an install will screw the booting of Vista x64 on the other disk (which, granted, I can disconnect for the install, but I'd rather not). At that point I decided to post a question here.So hopefully you understand what I want to achieve. I don't much care which Linux distro I install, but I'd rather have one which gives me as much usability out of the box (or easily installable) as possible.

I have purchased a DLink Sharecenter Pulse NAS as my PC failed. I wanted to put the two SATA drives in and extract the data before formatting to use as JBOD or RAID. However, before I managed to access my data, the setup software started formatting the drives. I switched it off immediately.
Purchased a SATA to USB2 lead and connected to my work laptop but I cannot see the drive(s). Used Partition Magic and each drive has 3 partitions - of which show about 74GB as used and 2 x 512MB as not. Looks like the drives have been partly set for Linux but the format was not comlete. Have tried to use explore2fs to read them but I cannot access the 74 GB partition only one of the 512MB partitions.
I'm a bit stuck now - any one got any ideas how I can get my files off the 74GB partition before I put them back in the NAS to format.

I have had one headache after another, first the updates break the bootstrap loader, this is a known issue yet they still continue to release grub updates that effect this and break the boot sequence. I am very surprised that this is done. so onto the next issue, they say use a CD to boot from and move the files for grub2 over, well that has been a nightmare taking two days to only find it deleted my initial Linux install, so wasted days, no real back up for the entire system and lost emails etc. The CDs lock up on boot, they do not load from the CDs and the instructions for fix grub are very lacking.
I would have thought a windoz based solution would have been offered so that this was more easy to do. This boot from a Live CD does not work and the CD downloads are not working either (using them to load via windoz again, but have lost months of work AGAIN). If an update is known to break the bootstrap loader, why on earth would you release updates that continuously break it?? Just ranting as support seems lacking....seems like you are on track to performing like windoz well... I am not impressed in the least given I work in the Open Source Community and havve done so for years..

I have a sony vaio vgn-AR71s with dual boot Vista and Ubuntu, no problems there.Since, over time, I messed up my previous Ubuntu setup while trying to get my wifi working, I decided to reinstall the whole thing and give it a fresh start. (as after two Kernel updates my wifi card drivers should be supported)I Reinstalled Vista and drivers after which I downloaded the latest Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD, burned to a disc and rebooted. When the Ubuntu installation was almost finished I got an error, the disc I was using got overheated (bad quality CD) and there was a problem copying certain files. However my hard disk was successfully partitioned and divided in half (1st partition Vista -NTFS and second Ubuntu -Ext4). But my laptop still boots directly into Vista ignoring the partly failed Ubuntu install, no boot option at startup. When I reboot using the LiveCD I can only install Ubuntu on a newly created third partition.
Is there any way I can continue or repair the previous ubuntu install? I searched this forum and the internet for options and hints yet don't seem to find an answer. The good thing is my wifi card is finally working (when I booted from the LiveCD it immediately detected wireless networks yeay)

Just when I thought I was getting my Ubuntu 10.04 system stabilized and really usable, the webcam magically stopped working. When I first installed 10.04, the webcam worked perfectly right out of the box. Tonight, I tried to start the video in a Skype conversation, and nothing. Video preferences in Skype showed no options for a camera. Rebooting the machine didn't help.
The one relevant thing I can think of that happened between the last time it worked and tonight is installing a number of updates. I'm not sure how to look up which packages were installed when -- I'm happy to run commands if someone can provide them.
Unfortunately, I don't remember how it was configured before. Since it was working, I didn't look at /dev to see where the camera shows up. At the moment, there is no /dev/video*. Clearly the system doesn't recognize that the camera is there, but it did before.. I don't recall device specifics. I looked online for a spec sheet that would say who is the webcam manufacturer, but I can only find the resolution. Tomorrow I have to boot into Windows to do some other work and I can get hardware info then. The machine is an MSI A6200 220US; the specs seem not to be available on MSI's website anymore.

I'm currently running 9.10 and I'm wondering if it isn't possible to turn certain features on or off. For example the dock that appears at the bottom of the screen, I don't dig it but it isn't under System ---> Preferences ---> Startup applications. Also when I connect/disconnect my modem, can I change the size of the notification window and how long it stays on the screen? Another is how to stop everything I plug in appearing on the desktop. I prefer an uncluttered desktop and would like to open plug-in devices through Places.

I am using Thunderbird for quite a long time now.
The problem is that I found that the feature which allows a user to use an audio file for new mail alerts is missing. I am using version 2.0.0.23. Now a popup showing new mails is working but it becomes very tiresome to always look at the monitor screen.
Moving to a new mail client is not an issue for me but this one big feature that Thunderbird has is holding me back.
That feature is the ability to encrypt the locally stored password with a "Master Password".
I used Evolution Mail client for a short time and liked it too but again the "Master Password" feature is missing.
Is there a way to enable sound alerts (new mails) in Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 ?
Does the latest version of evolution includes the "Master Password" feature? (I don't want to do all that configuration without asking.)

Maybe I don't pay enough attention. I just know that whenever I've wanted to resize an image or email it, I've been able to do it pretty quickly. It was usually a two step process of resizing with an editor and then sending from a menu. Today, though, I went into the shiny new Shotwell and there appears to be no way to resize; or email.
OK. Went back into F-Spot. Surely there's an easy way to resize and/or email from there. Nope. Are we missing an easy way to do this or am I missing something? I love Gimp but do I have to use that to resize an image? Seems like overkill. Ostensibly, there should be a one stop process - either from an app or from Nautilus - send image and a quick dialog to ask what size and GO!

So I am still getting use to Ubuntu as far as when the new OS comes out. I am use to when Windows did a release every 3-5 years. So last year I install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and already 10.10 is out. My understanding though 10.10 is not a LTS so should I upgrade? Or will mine automatically upgrade to that version? Is there any real new features to 10.10 that I am missing out on? I can't do anything for another month and a half for the fact I am on deployment in the US Navy but I am highly thinking about moving up.

I have recently installed new Ubuntu 10.04 system on notebook, and would like to have there all "notebook-like" features, like working fn+key shortcuts, and other similar things.
So I would like to know, if there is a way (complete package, or application) which can do this kind of things? I can't find any system built-in features like this.
Edit: Found there is fnfxd for Toshiba notebooks (which is my case), now the problem is where to find toshiba_acpi module, or how to enable it if it's there.

I can still type in commands so at least I can shutdown the computer, by typing in the commands blindly.
I've also noticed that my xserver keybindings have changed again, too
It's not self explainatory howto switch out of an xsession to the console.
I'm not quite sure if anything else has changed with this new set of drivers and I guess only time will tell.
So I'm hoping that the next xserver package updates will bring new features, functionality and foundation.
