CentOS 5 :: CentOS 5 Home Server Power Consumtion? (features, Kernel Versions Etc.)?
Feb 28, 2010I built a home server (NAS/WWW/SSH/media server etc) and chose CentOS 5 as the OS (stability, easy of configuration).I was just about to start tuning the power consumption when I realised that the kernel CentOS uses is so "old" that it does not support the latest reduced power consumption enhancements that Linux has achieved in big strides in the recent past (we are probably still talking 6-12+ months ago e.g. tickless kernel)..
So my questions; 1) I know CentOS was maybe not meant for home servers (certainly its not its primary purpose), but if it is, any ideas of what kind of power consumption it takes (I know its relative) and if there are particular power consumptions that are worthwhile?
2) Do you recommend me compiling my own 2.6.21+ kernel from kernel.org or am I just likely to have compatibility issues (I really did not want to do that) or when is CentOS 5.4 supposed to have a newer 2.6.21+ version kernel?
Was it wrong of me in principle to choose CentOS for a home server when I am power conscious? (I don't have a low-power VIA processor either but a P4 so I am really just hoping to make do with software changes).

Red Hat / Fedora :: Adding Good Repositories For CentOS?
Feb 19, 2011I'm giving CentOS a new look as a desktop. Been a few years since I last installed it on anything but a server. While the default repositories have improved greatly I am still bereft of so much of my cherished and necessary software. No Gambas, Wesnoth (shows up but version is 2 years out of date), Chrome, Audacious ugly plugins, XMMS support for FLAC (shows up but errors out if I try to install), Cinalarra, Audacity, JACK audio, Ardour, Xine, Amarok, Blender, Gthumb, Abiword, gramps, disk utility, many KDE apps, it's almost like KDE is a forgotten desktop manager for CentOS repsositories and pages more of software I'm too lazy too list. All of this is software which shows up in Debian based distros and most of which in Fedora/SUSE repositories.
What are some good repositories for CentOS. I clearly have the wrong ones enabled or CentOS is a very crippled desktop. Here are the repositories I've added/have.

c5-media errors out so I have it disabled.

Apr 10, 2011My production server has failed and am going to purchase a new computer to replace it, however the hard drive is still in tact. What is the best process for migrating over. Could I simply through the hard drive in the new computer and boot? If not would using the upgrade process on a DVD install disk do the trick?

Mar 25, 2010The gstreamer-0.10 good plugins in CentOS 5.4 seems to be missing souphttpsrc. I looked online and can only seem to find references to it being in the bad plugins, yet the bad plugins documentation says it was moved to the good plugins.My experience downloading rpms is that the dependencies to build anything for gstreamer require I also download about 20 other rpms.I am reluctant to download/install rpms for a different distro.Has anyone successfully installed newer good plugins (particularly, souphttpsrc)?

Jun 15, 2010since yesterday, this domain has been painful slow and the only fix is removing it from /var/cache/yum/updates/mirrorlist.txt the last straw was about an hour ago, when 10kb/s was the max bandwidth and I had to download perl and glibc * glibc-common it would have taken over an hour. once removed from updates/mirrorlist the other mirrors picked up the slack and I was back in business,

CentOS 5 :: RAID 10 "slow" Reads But Good Writes
Feb 28, 2011I have a 6 disk mdadm RAID 10 array of Western Digital RE3 drives. IOZone and all the other tools I have tried are showing pretty lackluster reads for a six drive RAID 10 array, in the area of 200MB/s. Writes are closer to what I'd expect in that area, around 340MB/s. These drives fly with an Adaptec RAID controller, but as soon as I stick them in an mdadm array, the reads just aren't what I'd expect.
I am using what I believe to be optimal settings:
-C /dev/md2 --chunk=1024 -n 6 -l 10 -p f2 /dev/sda5 /dev/sdb5 /dev/sdc5 /dev/sdd5 /dev/sde5 /dev/sdf5
-b 4096 -E stride=256,stripe-width=768
Debian Multimedia :: New Features In Sid X ?
Jan 14, 2010I just upgraded my sid install and after shutting down X I don't see any text on the console.
I can still type in commands so at least I can shutdown the computer, by typing in the commands blindly.
I've also noticed that my xserver keybindings have changed again, too
It's not self explainatory howto switch out of an xsession to the console.
I'm not quite sure if anything else has changed with this new set of drivers and I guess only time will tell.
So I'm hoping that the next xserver package updates will bring new features,functionality and foundation.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Customization - Turn Certain Features On Or Off
Mar 20, 2010I'm currently running 9.10 and I'm wondering if it isn't possible to turn certain features on or off. For example the dock that appears at the bottom of the screen, I don't dig it but it isn't under System ---> Preferences ---> Startup applications. Also when I connect/disconnect my modem, can I change the size of the notification window and how long it stays on the screen? Another is how to stop everything I plug in appearing on the desktop. I prefer an uncluttered desktop and would like to open plug-in devices through Places.

Sep 7, 2011I was recently pushed back towards linux after spending nearly a decade in a windows only environment and I'm finding myself struggling. The reason for the change is that we purchased Kaspersky and the mail gateway is only available under linux. They advised Debian and Exim.
The crux of the problem is that I have a working debian server running with exim4 and kaspersky to act as a gateway mail server but it's not checking inbound mail against the internal servers address list. For this I need to add ldap support to the exim package but I'm not sure how to do this - it seems silly that I should have to start over at this stage.
Full details:= I didn't have too much trouble installing and configuring a debian 64bit server for our network, adding exim4 and getting it all set up to work, then several weeks of hot fix releases and "oh, it shouldn't do that" passed as we attempted to get the Kaspersky software operating properly. During that time I learned that the kaspersky software does not provide a function to check inbound emails against the internal server. Previously we did this with an LDAP lookup under the Sophos Puremessage software that Kaspersky replaced. Without this function the MTA sends out a lot of backscatter that results in the server being put on blocklists and that effects business. Kaspersky tell me this is something I need to set the MTA software (exim4) to do so I've looked that up and it appears that step 1 is to install exim with ldap support... but I've already installed and configured exim without ldap support. So I'm not sure if I have to start over by removing exim, install over the top or what. Also if I do add ldap support or install exim-heavy over what I have will I need to reconfigure everything I've done so far?
as I said, it's been 10 years since I used linux and even then it was fairly basic sendmail and apache stuff.

My question: are there features in Gnome that are missing in LXDE? I can not think of any, so far. The only thing I miss so far is a possibility to edit the menu, as the menu is huge

Apr 18, 2010I am running openSUSE 11.2 x86_64. I am processing work units from Folding@home on this pc. Strange thing is, when I actually leave the pc alone and working on folding@home, my performance actually drops instead of going up as I would expect. I believe there is some kind of powersaving feature I cant find or something else that's hurting quite a bit on the PC. I am talking about maybe 20-30% performance loss. PC in question is: Athlon II 630.
Already deactivated Cool'n'Quiet from the BIOS. Got no fresh ideas on what could cause this weird behaviour.

PC was "idle" working on folding and I came back at 54%, see the huge difference? Frames were taking about 13 minutes each when "idle". When I am using the computer, frames are done within 8 minutes.
General :: Ubuntu - Removing Embedded Features From A PDF?
Jun 8, 2011I'm looking for a way to remove embedded features from a PDF document. I recently purchased a Kindle DX. When I try to open some of my PDF files on the device, I get a message saying: this pdf cannot be opened due to embedded features not yet supported by kindleI'm looking for a way to remove the use of these features from the document so I can view it on my Kindle. I'm a Ubuntu Linux user. (I tried opening the PDF in Document Viewer and printing it to a PDF file by going to File->Print. This make it so I could open it on the Kindle DX, but the font is messed up and very difficult to read. This won't do.)

As far as I can tell, this occured on upgrade to 9.10. I've tried using different Java environments, but no real success. I wonder if I should just go for a removal and reinstall of R and JGR?
Ubuntu :: Features Missing In Thunderbird & Evolution
Feb 20, 2010I am using Thunderbird for quite a long time now.
The problem is that I found that the feature which allows a user to use an audio file for new mail alerts is missing. I am using version 2.0.0.23. Now a popup showing new mails is working but it becomes very tiresome to always look at the monitor screen.
Moving to a new mail client is not an issue for me but this one big feature that Thunderbird has is holding me back.
That feature is the ability to encrypt the locally stored password with a "Master Password".
I used Evolution Mail client for a short time and liked it too but again the "Master Password" feature is missing.
Is there a way to enable sound alerts (new mails) in Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 ?
Does the latest version of evolution includes the "Master Password" feature? (I don't want to do all that configuration without asking.)
Ubuntu :: Photo Management In 10.10 (missing Features)
Oct 26, 2010Maybe I don't pay enough attention. I just know that whenever I've wanted to resize an image or email it, I've been able to do it pretty quickly. It was usually a two step process of resizing with an editor and then sending from a menu. Today, though, I went into the shiny new Shotwell and there appears to be no way to resize; or email.
OK. Went back into F-Spot. Surely there's an easy way to resize and/or email from there. Nope. Are we missing an easy way to do this or am I missing something? I love Gimp but do I have to use that to resize an image? Seems like overkill. Ostensibly, there should be a one stop process - either from an app or from Nautilus - send image and a quick dialog to ask what size and GO!
Ubuntu Installation :: Any Real New Features To 10.10 That Missing Out On?
Feb 6, 2011So I am still getting use to Ubuntu as far as when the new OS comes out. I am use to when Windows did a release every 3-5 years. So last year I install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and already 10.10 is out. My understanding though 10.10 is not a LTS so should I upgrade? Or will mine automatically upgrade to that version? Is there any real new features to 10.10 that I am missing out on? I can't do anything for another month and a half for the fact I am on deployment in the US Navy but I am highly thinking about moving up.
