Ubuntu Servers :: Web Jukebox Software - Use Nice Web Panel And Useful Features
May 27, 2010
I'm looking for a good jukebox software, by good, I mean, easy to use, nice web panel, and useful features. (Okay, it's a bit vague...I admit it) So I need your help to find the "best" one (I know it would be even better to try every solution, but I'm sure I will not be able to see every features as you might have seen) I've seen so far 3 good projects:
- Ampache
- Jinzora
- and Subsonic
I've tried Ampache and Subsonic thanks to their demo. Unfortunately I didn't manage to get a demo of Jinzora. Ampache seems a bit 'old fashon' (The interface is not very clear, not very user friendly, ...) but seems to get good features. inzora, according to the screenshots I've seen, the interface is quite complete. And Subsonic seems to be a really good one (but in Java), a lot of features and a nice interface. I'm not asking you which one do you think is the best, but which one do you prefer and why ? Which useful features, pros and cons, etc.

I am using guayadeque and I need it to notify me about the title and the artist when a new song begins. Also it would be great if it could be controlled without restoring the window. I mean, every time I want to pause the song or skip to the next track, I should restore the minimized window and do whatever I want. Is there a way to control from the task bar or upper panel?

I just noticed that under my panel sub menu, there are no entries after I upgraded to 4.5 from 4.4.4. Also, the embedded terminal option seems to be gone, it now only fires off an external Konsole. I really used that feature a lot and it was very handy.

I have set up UEC and have installed the store images. I have seen that we can create and run instances which are similar to virtual machines. We can utilize virtualization and create virtual machines and thereby fully utilize the server. Not sure what extra benefits or features can be achieved using cloud (say UEC). I suppose I am missing something. Kindly let me know how cloud adds more value than server virtualization.

I have this lovely iMac sitting in my cellar and I want to revive it. It's objectively beautiful and it has enough horsepower to become my jukebox. Its integrated audio is crystal clear and it has no fans: perfect. I have just one serious problem: I'd like to use it without mouse and keyboard. So what I'd need is a cool app to handle mp3s (with album art and the more cool stuff I can get) AND to be controlled from an Android phone. There's a lot of applications (songbird, xbmc, banshee, rythmbox, others) that have remote controller app on android market but I think they will not run on ppc in their latest versions. Any compiling from source succesfull experience / hints on my little project?

I am running J. Rivers Media Jukebox 8 on my Windows XP partition, and would like to put Media Jukebox 12 (a free one) on my Ubuntu partition. I've installed it, but it won't run since it needs some components of Windows Media Player to work.I do have WINE. Failing that, what is the best music jukebox for Ubuntu. I use my computer as a part of my sound system and have over 14k songs. Do not use it for other media functions, just music; so I don't need a "media player." Many of my music files are ogg vorbis as well as mp3, etc.

What would be the best music jukebox that doesn't lag when there is a lot of music in the library (400+ gigs)?
I have tried songbird, but its pretty laggy. I like to import all my music and turn on shuffle and go through my songs.

I have a PowerFile C200 DVD Jukebox and I want to get it out of storage and put it on my Ubuntu Server. I have looked around and I have not found one, but I'm sorta new to the Linux world. I am hoping that someone can help me out here and point me in the right direction. It is produced by the folks at [URL]... It is several years old, but still looks fine. It only connects using FireWire. I'd really hate to have to stand up a windows server just to get this thing running again.

I have a Linux (Fedora) server up in the attic which is connected to the whole-house speaker system. It has all my MP3s, etc. I would love to be able to control the sound output of that machine from multiple computers. Subsonic ([URL]... comes close -- it has the base functionality that I need (web control of server sound) However, I'm looking for something that handles the multi-user part better. Specifically, would like my users (children, wife) to have their own play lists and ratings. Would love if the tool could select from all of our favorites when I wanted to play music with dinner (including vetoes for the stuff some of ushate). And it doesn't seem like Subsonic allows rating at the song level.

I want to set up a hosting control panel solution on my Ubuntu LAMP server to make it easier to administer virtual hosts, users, databases, and so on. I'm completely disgusted with how drastically the installation seems to alter your system (I highly doubt it even works at all with Debian/Ubuntu).
I'd actually prefer something that was more than JUST a web hosting manager, but that gave me options for managing my server in general. What control panel option would you recommend?
Most importantly, I want something that's going to work well with the Apache config standards that are unique to Debian/Ubuntu and won't require a PhD to setup. I really like the default Apache/PHP stack in Ubuntu. Of course I'm particularly interested in Open Source solutions. The new OpenPanel project sounds really exciting, and I've heard lots of people talking about Webmin. Others I've heard good things about include VHCS, ispCP, and ISPConfig.

I have freshly installed an Ubuntu 10.04.1 by internet.
All is running well, but my nice values are all set to 0. Is there a script that handles these at boot time? How can I reset them to "appropriate" or "normal" levels (e.g. not all at 0)? I know in other installs, my nice levels vary depending on the process and the user.
Attached is a screen shot of my gnome-system-monitor, and aside from init, which I had set to -15, all others are at 0.
Computer specifications:
Linux AMD-LNX000 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 17 20:05:27 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3000+

I have been using wamp on an xp box and now have set up ubuntu with the localhost server seeming to be going okay.
As this is just a desktop graphical test server with no real public hosting, I was hoping to find a control panel like in wamp where one can stop/start php, apache, mysql, phpmyadmin and see logs etc.

I'm currently running on a really old computer with one proc and little memory. It's just enough to get skype running but it only works well enough if I change the nice level to -5 or lower. Now the person that uses skype in the house is really the wife, I don't want to teach her how to open htop in command line, fine the pid and then use the correct command to change the nice. What I am looking for is a script (sorry I don't know thing one about programming/scripting) that will change the nice priority periodically for all pid that are skype. This way call processes will get reniced as well. I know better then to run it as root/sudo, but I am at a loss (even searches came up with not much) on how to do this.

Does anyone know the class name for Empathy's chat windows and buddy list? On Ubuntu 10.10:
System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager->Window Management->Place Windows->Fixed Window Placement
Trying to grab the Empathy window class doesn't produce any results and adding "empathy" as a windows class to control only affects the "about empathy" window and not the conversations or the contact list.
It'd be nice if Empathy behaved like the rest of my programs and allowed me to restrict it to a specific workspace. Not sure what class I should be using.

my idea is to have gvim working like gedit in ubuntu 11.04: when you open a file thru unity's dash, and if there's already an open editor, it opens the file in a new tab.To make nautilus open more than one selected files in gvim's tabs, i used to change the exec line in /usr/share/applications/gvim.desktop to "Exec=gvim -p --remote-tab-silent %F". This trick is working ok in nautilus and also in unity, just like the way I was planning.
However, when i try to open gvim itself without specifying any files (from unity's dash or a launcher set) it fails. Can anyone please help me with this ?

I've been searching for the answer to my question for quite some time on google, no luck. Due to my searchings I've become very familiar with nice and renice.
I have a script I use for launching a game installed with wine. I cannot/wont run this game as root but I need to be able to use nice --7. As of now I can't I -- ofc -- get "permission denied"..
So how do I make the full range of niceness ( [-19;20] IIRC ) available for all users on my system -- or even just for 1 user?

This is my first day with ubuntu 11.04. First impression was great but now I have a problem.
I tried to change the desktop switcher to rotate cube. On ubuntu 10.10 I had installed compiz fusion. So I went to compiz setting, I looked for rotate cube and I ticked it. When I did this a couple of windows asking about enableing and disableing poped up, and unfortunatley I clicked them without reading. I assumed they were just interface related...
Know when I open my laptop I don't have any main menu bar, or tool bar at the top of the desktop nor application icons on my left. I tried "CTRL+ALT+T" but the terminal does not open. I tried opening with recovery mode but unssuccessful.

So some flash games don't seem to play nice with Ubuntu. Some do. I have no problem playing Cursed Treasure, but when I try to play, say, Learn To Fly, the opening page loads, but then when I click the "play" link, it does nothing.
Also, using the latest release of Ubuntu.

Since TeamSpeak 2 doesn't come in a nice RPM anywhere, I am under the assumption that I have to go to TeamSpeak's website, download TS2, and install through their script. I did all of that, and I can successfully launch TeamSpeak, however there is no sound whatsoever. No mic, and no speakers either. TeamSpeak automatically forces mute microphone and mute headphones on me, and I can't uncheck them. Therefore, something must be wrong with TeamSpeak and my sound setup.

All my applications seem to be running at nice of 19 except bash and daemons which are running at 0. My understanding is that the default nice value is either 0 or 10 (forget which) but not 19.Ran search in /etc/sysconfig/ editor and no results for "nice" and looked at the bashrc files and again no lines contain "nice".
