Slackware :: X Broken: .serverauth Does Not Exist?

Nov 17, 2010

I upgraded to qt 4.7.1 and it broke X. So I reverted to the older version of qt, and x is still broken! when I run startx I get the following error:

Code:
xauth: file /(user)/.serverauth.2474 does not exist

OpenSUSE Install :: Xauth: File /home/kostas/.serverauth.3396 Does Not Exist

Jun 15, 2011

on boot I got a message that (part of) level 5 was skipped, and I ended up on console. So I tried startx but get this message (probably the reason boot failed also):

xauth: file /home/kostas/.serverauth.3396 does not exist

General :: Rm: Cannot Remove '/home/ridwan/.serverauth.3457': Read-only File System

Mar 10, 2010

I am using Slackware 13 x86_4. I have it set so that when I close my lid, it suspends to RAM. When I open my lid, it asks for password, but after I enter it, it freezes. I force KDE down by Ctrl+Alt+Backspace then read the errors. It says:

Code:

xauth: error in locking authority file /home/ridwan/.Xauthority
rm: cannot remove '/home/ridwan/.serverauth.3457': Read-only file system

When I try to startx again, it says

Code:

/usr/bin/startx: line 158: cannot create temp file for here document: Read-only file system
/usr/bin/startx: line 174: cannot create temp file for here document: Read-only file system
/usr/bin/startx: line 174: cannot create temp file for here document: Read-only file system

It forces me to power off the laptop by holding down the power button. When I try ctrl+alt+delete, I get an error saying "can't execute from /sbin/shutdown/"

Slackware :: Kdestartupconfig4 Does Not Exist Or Fails - Error Code Is 127?

Nov 21, 2010

I got a problem with my Slackware installation after upgrading to slackware-current. I made a clean 13.1 install on my laptop, then I logged in as root, connected to the net and upgraded to slackware-current. Then, after rebooting, I try to log in to kde as root but I get this error:
Code:
kdestartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. The error code is 127. Check your installation. After getting these errors, I made a completely new fresh installation but I got the same errors again.

I even added another user with the adduser command just in case that was the problem but that didn't help. I can't log in to KDE.

Slackware :: 64 - Static Compilation Broken?

Apr 23, 2010

I have a weird bug : segmentation fault appears when executing the 'retq' instruction of my sigalrm callback in static link...It seems it happens only on slackware...Here is a simple test case, compiled in shared -> no problem, static -> crash...Paste the following script in a file named "test-sigalrm-pack2.sh", and execute it: it will generate the C++ source and a simple build/test script.... Just launch the build script (tst-sigalrm-build).

Code:
#!/bin/sh

Slackware :: X On Current Broken For ATI Mobile M7?

Mar 10, 2010

Does anyone have current running with X on old ATI hardware? I have a laptop with ATI Mobile M7 and X completely fails to load. There are no errors in the Xorg log file. No failed modules or failure to load a module. The last line in the Xorg log says something to the effect of "VGA0 does not support DRI2".

When monitoring the processes while I start X, I can see xinit load, then X. After the line above is added to the log file, X dies. This is so bad that it takes my entire display with it so I cannot switch terminal. I cannot restart a tty session from a remote connection. The only way to get the display back is to reboot.

I tried the suggestions form this thread to no avail. Recompiling the kernel with "CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE=y" also had no effect. To get a working system I had to roll back to X from Slack 13, which works fine with current.

Did i missed something with the upgrade? Anything else I should try?

System info

Code:
Slackware-current 32 (with X from Slackware 13)
Kernel: generic-smp-2.6.33-smp
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]

Slackware :: Quick Note On Broken Mrtg-2.15.2 From Slackbuilds?

this morning after the latest updates for slackware-current my mrtg-2.15.2 from slackbuilds failed with

Compilation failed in require at /usr/bin/mrtg line 89. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/bin/mrtg line 89. As there's currently no newer version for mrtg on slackbuilds, i downloaded mrtg-2.17.0.tar.gz from oetiker's page and compiled it. Changing path in crontab and it works well.

Slackware :: Script To Detect Orphaned Libraries - Broken Lib Links - Missing Dependencies

Mar 9, 2010

My recent borked upgrade to -current inspired me to try to come up with a way to sanity-check the lib and bin dirs for broken library symlinks (possibly indicating missing libs) and for binaries and libraries that belong to no installed package, as well as missing dependencies.

This script is the result.

I've checked the script results manually, and it appears to be accurate, so I figured I'd post it here for a second opinion, and/or because others may find it useful too. I'm not aware of another popular method of doing this on Slackware, so here it is:

Ubuntu :: 'gdm' User Does Not Exist

Oct 3, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 9 on my kids' computer a while back and usually the computer boots up and goes directly into Ubuntu. However, this morning when they booted it up, the following error message displayed: "The GDM user 'gdm' does not exist. Please correct GDM configuration and restart GDM." It seems that they had inadvertently messed up some configuration files. After pressing 'OK' it asked me for my user name and password, which I supplied, but that didn't work either. So, either I've forgotten my password or my kids seriously messed up their computer, so much so that I can even work with it in command line. I was thinking about simply reinstalling Ubuntu and possibly updating to version 10, but I'd rather not lose the files on the computer. Thus my question: Does anyone see a way of not losing my and my kids' files while getting back into Ubuntu?

Fedora :: Installing Gcc - 'cstdio.h' Not Exist

May 1, 2011

I was trying to install gcc, and it sorta worked, but not really.. Im a student, and we were using an ada server that had 'gcc' already installed, so that we could cd to a directory and then 'gcc -o NAME FILEPATH' I tried to recreate this set up on my machine with Fedora 11... on my mac it is installed automatically and can be accessed from the terminal. How do I do it in Fedora? I downloaded 'gcc-4.6.0', I ran 'configure' from the gcc directory and a lot of text scrolled by really fast.. but then afterwards it said something failed...

but its weird, cuz I can write a simple 'c' program and gcc it from the terminal and it compiles.. it just gives me warnings about everything.. saying that packages like 'cstdio.h' do no exist.. warnings tho, not errors.. and it still runs.

I have a compiled program, a tagger to identify parts of text, which claims it does not exist. This executable has to be called by a generated script, which is how I ran into this issue. What are the reasons this error could show up?The executable was copied from another machine. The file does have execution privileges (it gives a proper not-allowed message without them)I've tried copying the file to a different location (same problem)I've tried replacing the file with a fresh copy (same problem)The file does exist. Opening it with pico shows a file with binary data.
