OpenSUSE Install :: Xauth: File /home/kostas/.serverauth.3396 Does Not Exist

Jun 15, 2011

on boot I got a message that (part of) level 5 was skipped, and I ended up on console. So I tried startx but get this message (probably the reason boot failed also):

xauth: file /home/kostas/.serverauth.3396 does not exist

Fatal server error:Cannot move old log file "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old"
consult the The X.Org Foundation support at X.Org Wiki - Home for help.

General :: Rm: Cannot Remove '/home/ridwan/.serverauth.3457': Read-only File System

Mar 10, 2010

I am using Slackware 13 x86_4. I have it set so that when I close my lid, it suspends to RAM. When I open my lid, it asks for password, but after I enter it, it freezes. I force KDE down by Ctrl+Alt+Backspace then read the errors. It says:

Code:

xauth: error in locking authority file /home/ridwan/.Xauthority
rm: cannot remove '/home/ridwan/.serverauth.3457': Read-only file system

When I try to startx again, it says

Code:

/usr/bin/startx: line 158: cannot create temp file for here document: Read-only file system
/usr/bin/startx: line 174: cannot create temp file for here document: Read-only file system
/usr/bin/startx: line 174: cannot create temp file for here document: Read-only file system

[code]...

It forces me to power off the laptop by holding down the power button. When I try ctrl+alt+delete, I get an error saying "can't execute from /sbin/shutdown/"

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 Xauth - Login Dropping Out At Runlevel 5

Oct 10, 2010

Everything worked fine for several updates to the final system, now suddenly when trying to login dropping out at runlevel 5 and login. When doing login the system starts as root with startx but not as user. This is for me a permission problem. Only: I did not change the permissions and I did not log into as a root-X system. I just did set the permissions in yast to secure. Nothing else. The system complains:

Ubuntu :: Unable To Login (home Directory Does Not Exist)

Nov 8, 2010

I just recently bought a second hand netbook (HP Mini Mi 110) from ebay which use linux ubuntu as OS. I changed the previous username to mine but when i tried to login again...this warning pop out "your home directory is listed as: '/home/mazlin' but it does not appear to exist. Do you want to log in with the /(root) directory as you home directory? It is unlikely anything will work unless you use a failsafe session" so i click yes. then...

user's $HOME/.drmc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. user's $HOME directory must be owned by user and not writable by other users. next i click OK, then... your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. if you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem. when i click ok, the login screen reappear again... how to use failsafe sessions.

Ubuntu :: Logon Script - Create A File (if It Doesn't Already Exist) And Checks The File For Some Info

May 24, 2010

I want to create a logon script (or somesuch) that creates a file (if it doesn't already exist) and checks the file for some info otherwise. If it finds a given trigger in that file, it logs into a local database and does some operations.

Now my problem isn't with creating that file or even getting it to function as a logon script -- it's with permissions. After the logon script creates the file, I want that user to have read access on it ONLY. Further, I don't want to give the user any kind of root access so that they could do the database operations in question or chown/chmod the file.

What's the best practice here? I'm noticing that whenever the script runs (in .bashrc right now) the script runs with the current user's permissions. Ideally, I'd like to make it so the login script can run at a higher level of permissions, (higher than the user has). Is this even possible? What's the best way to do this?

OpenSUSE Install :: Option "Repair System" Does Not Exist In 11.3

Sep 23, 2010

Turns out I downloaded the openSUSE 11.3 DVD Full and well, I see that in the boot options, I do not see the option "Repair System", only:

"Install"
"Booting from Hard Disk"
"Verify installation media"
"Firmware Test"
"Test Hardware"

No more, and I see that everyone leaves the option, as in version 11.2, to "System Restore / Repair System" Is there any way to get it? I need to repair GRUB, as I appear, I had it in a logical partition and therefore I have GRUB errors, since the re-installation of windows and then deleting it, I thought of this. Any way to get this option by the Live CD or what? Is it a BUG in version 11.3?

OpenSUSE Install :: Reinstalling OpenSUSE And Preserving /home Partition?

Sep 29, 2010

I'd like to reinstall openSUSE 11.3 on a pc and would like to preserve the /home partition. The current partiton structure is

sda1 /boot
sda2 /swap
sda3 /extended partition
sda4 /
sda5 /home

When the installer gets to the point to set up the partitions it offers something like

sda1 /
sda2 /swap
sda3 /home

I'm not sure which option to take now. I assume I choose the option to edit the partitions but I'm not clear how to preserve the /home as it's now got a different partition number or does that no matter as long as I choose not to format it? Also, to replicate the original partition structure I'd need to delete the partitions and add them in the correct order but would that destroy the /home?I'm a bit confused with how it will work.

OpenSUSE Network :: Setting Up A Home File/print Server?

Aug 24, 2010

I would like to build a server to act as a file/print server for my home. My wife, sister in law, and myself would use it. I would like it to be friendly to both windows and linux. My sister and I are both dual boot and for now my wife is windows only. Pretty soon though I plan on setting her up on linux as well. What would I need? And are there any "good" guides to setting something like this up?

I would like to use the system to:

- Store media / files
- Maybe have KMyMoney on it and share with the wife
- Hook a printer to and use as common printer

Software :: Using Xauth For Remote Access?

Oct 11, 2010

I'm new to this forum and pretty new to the Linux world. I'm currently working for someone and learning this as I go along and we want to be able to set up a machine so that we can display some kind of internet browser in a type of kiosk mode (without the fullscreen) on the gdm login page.

I've been able to find a browser to do that but we cannot edit how the gdm login screen boots to include the browser. I was told to try to see if I could remotely access said machine to start the browser on the same display as the gdm login which happens to use display :0. When I tried experimenting with xclock first, it would not let me run it on the same display short of me using xhost + command. I was told to try to use the xauth application to create my own authority file and allow permission but I don't know how to do this. I've tried several different combinations I've found on other forums and none seem to have worked.

Now, I've added up the numbers, and they sure don't add up to 74.51 GB. Any way that I can make /home bigger? It won't let me increase it anymore beyond 7.89 GB, which is a total bummer.

Fedora :: X Forwarding Over SSH In A VNC Session - No Xauth Data?

Jun 16, 2010

Here is my setup:

Machine A (fedora, gateway on remote network)
Machine B (fedora on local network)
Machine C (Vista on local network).

I want to connect to machine A from C and run graphical apps on it. I figured that installing a vnc client will be easier then X server (last time I tried X server on windows it did not end well). To ensure security, I vnc into a local linux box (machine B) and then ssh over to the remote box. When I ssh (with the -X param) into A from B, everything works great including the graphical apps. However, when I vnc into B from C and then ssh into A, I get the following message:

Warning: No Xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 fowrard If I then try to run a graphical app I get cannot open display:

localhost:11.0

why does X forwarding work directly and not through vnc?

OpenSUSE Install :: Encrypting Home Folder ?

Dec 2, 2009

I've changed my distro from Kubuntu to Opensuse with Kde and I really like the new one.

Kde look better on opensuse as well as firefox seems to run faster. But I miss a feature I had on Kubuntu that is the encryption of my home folder (And it is essential as I want to install Opensuse on my notebook).

I would like to know if it is possible and, if it is, how to encrypt my system in order to keep all my personal data and stored passwords safe in case of someone have access to my notebook.

I liked opensuse a lot but this is the only thing that is keeping me from a complete distro change.
