Me and my friend have been talking about networking our two machines over the internet. So he has done his side. Now i need to do my side... Any ideas on how i would go about configuring my computer to do this?
View 9 RepliesI've been trying to understand how Linux creates the network/interfaces on a machine (been reading the Linux admin guide), but as I'm pretty new to this subject, I've got lost in the forest.
To provide with my goal:
1.) Learn about network setups on Linux
2.) Be able to maintain my own (virtual) network
3.) Configure my (virtual) network
I've been learning linux for a while now with half an eye on making a career out of it in future. One sizeable gap in my knowledge at the moment is networking. Is it feasible/desirable to set up a network of virtual machines to use as an environment to learn networking? My budget is non-existent so I was hoping to be able to get a basic understanding of the principles from installing a few desktops, a virtual gateway etc on VMware workstation on my laptop, and doing a lot of reading online.
Is this feasible, or will I just end up learning about virtual networks instead of real ones? Also how much power would be required, because my 3GB RAM lappy has just gone bang and all I have now is a (new) 1GB RAM lappy.
So in an effort to increase the speed of my netbook, I removed Ubuntu and installed Lubuntu on it. When I tried to mount my samba share as I normally do, I noticed it wasn't able to connect - mount error(113): No route to host. Sensing something fishy, I attempted to ping the machine (both by name and by IP) - Destination Host Unreachable.The machine I'm trying to connect to is using Ubuntu 10.04 x64. I attempted to ping the other way and it was able to connect to the netbook just fine. When the netbook was using Ubuntu, it was connecting fine. My iptables check out ok, but here is the output of iptables -nvL:

Does lubuntu have some funky firewall built in to it that I can't find? (I've Googled for information on a Lubuntu default firewall and can't find any)
My two machines are both running Ubuntu 10.10. I want to transfer program files between them using a local area network.
My Ubuntu machines can both see the Window machines on the network, and get files from them. But my Ubuntu machines do not detect each other as being on the network. Nor can my Windows machines detect my Ubuntu machines.
From what I can tell, that's normal, and I've become resigned to using a pendrive to transfer files between the two machines. Or even sending files as email attachments.
there is a clean and easy way to transfer files between two Ubuntu machines on the same local area network.
I have a home network of 4 computers - 3 Windows & 1 Xubuntu I'm able to connect to the Xubuntu machine from all of the Windows computers, but I can't do the opposite - connect to the Windows machines from the Xubuntu. I'm using Gigolo, and I can see the network, but it says no servers found.
View 5 Replies View Relatedgive a reference to the definition of 'isolated network' as used in the Virtual Machine Manager? I have virtual machines that I do not want to have access to the host, I thought 'isolated network' did this but the VM's can ping the host. If (probably) I am wrong, how can I create an network that can not see anything else but what is also on the same network? The host and the isolated network are 192. and 172. The virtual bridge is not connected (or so it says) to any physical device.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having issues setting up file sharing between two Linux machines. I've tried the forum cookie cutter answer of "right click folder, sharing options, share, allow others to write and edit, allow guest accounts", but I simply cannot get my two Ubuntu 10.10 machines to see each others shared files. I HAVE been able to download and use the program "Personal File Sharing", and with it I CAN share the "Shared" folder between both machines. I'd prefer to learn the correct way to link these two boxes up though, and be able to share more than 1 directory. Am I missing any programs to complete this link? Do I need to use Samba? I've tinkered with it, and I can get both computers to see a workgroup name I set up, but cannot get them to view each other in it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've run into a problem gathering usage for my xen virtual systems. With my old model I used to gather all network usage via my cisco devices using the the counters for each port. Each system had it's own port on the switch, and I tracked network usage accordingly. Now that I'm using xen for virtual systems, and multiple vm's share the same switch port, i'm not exactly sure what my best option is for tracking usage.
I thought I may be able to setup vlans on the switch, and bind each vm to a different vlan using vconfig... but it seems like there has to be a better solution than that.
I just installed open Suse 11.3, and I cannot SSH my school. Upon further investigation I could not even ping any machines outside my local area network. Ironically I could nmap machines outside my local area network.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two networks. One of them is wired, the other is wireless. The wired has an internet connection and a few other computers connected to it. The wireless network has a few hosts connected to it too, but it has no internet connection. What I've been trying, fruitlessly, to do, is make all connections that are bound to the internet, or my wired network, be routed that way, and all the connections to the hosts of the wireless network go that way.
Here's the setup..
Wired:
192.168.1.0/24 Gateway = 192.168.1.1
Route internet through here
Wireless
192.168.2.0/24 Gateway = 192.168.2.1
If my computer sends a packet to the internet, it should be routed through 192.168.1.1 If I send a packet to one of the local hosts of the wireless network, it should be routed through 192.168.2.1. Here's the routing table I've set up(This is one of many configurations I've tried)

With this, and everything else, I get destination host unreachable when pinging. The strange thing is that, if I unplug my eth cable, reboot and connect to the wireless network, everything is fine and I can access the router and the others. I'm trying to improve my networking skills, as I've had this of setting up a small linux box as a router for quite some time, for the fun of it, but I need to get routing under control before I go ruin my network.

Am using 10.04 and quite happy with the way it is working. my nephew and my mother have also switched to ubuntu.
To save on internet usage and load on the ubuntu servers, can i download upgrade files in one computer and then upgrade all systems?
I've been having some problems trying to get a new netbook working with China Telecom's 3G service (works wonderfully in Windows, but still trying to figure Ubuntu out), so until I figure out the problem with this Huawei modem, I've written a quick python script to handle updates/installations on the Ubuntu side. (Synaptic does fine on generating download scripts for packages, but it needs an option to handle updates as well)
If anyone else has a use for this, you're welcome to use it. Please let me know what needs to be changed to make it work on your box.
i've been trying to network my machines together, 3 to be exact, without using SAMBA, as there is no point using SAMBA as there are no windows machines on the network at all, have tried using the standard network admin GUI's and following some guides, without success, what is the step by step procedure for creating network shares linux-linux only networking, regards
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a problem sharing files between two machines on my network, one, my main one running 10.10 and the other running Lubuntu. I've used the share files option on my main computer, and they show up on the Lubuntu machine, but when I try accessing the files, I get a message telling me that they'failed to mount'. It's frustrating in that I can see that the files are there, and obviously the Lubuntu machine can 'see' them too. I'm sure that I must have missed out something, and I've tried searching, but so far have only come accross some very old tutorials that just confuse me more. Surely there must be a fool proof way of getting this all working? (I've tried Giver, but the Lubuntu machine refuses to run Giver!)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got a few parts laying around and maybe a 100 bucks on NewEgg I can get a Windows Server going. However, I have a few questions. I already have two Ubuntu servers going. My main concern is OS updates. I have Ubuntu based distros covered via apt-cacher-ng on one of my Ubuntu servers. I also have a nice squid server going with adzapper and so on. However, I have a bunch of Windows based machines on my network, and I have very limited bandwidth. I know I can run a virtual server on my main server, but I prefer to have an actual box just for a WSUS server for personal reasons. This is only an option if there is no option for WSUS style updating through Linux on my current server.
If I have to build a low powered Windows Server box in order to just push Windows updates for XP, Vista, and 7 to save bandwidth in the long run will a copy of Windows Home Server do the trick? I read an article from MaximumPC that WHS 2.0 will have a WSUS feature, but is this feature available in WHS 1.0? This is a really crappy way of storing updates and save bandwidth, but I don't know what other options I have. I live and work in a very remote area and I've already done everything I can think of to help save bandwidth. Like having a transparent proxy server and apt-cacher-ng running. It's also helps run things a lot faster when updating Ubuntu based boxes and surfing the internet. If I could just get the Windows updates out of the way I would be golden. I'll wait for WHS 2.0 if I have to. I'm not buying a full blown copy of Windows Server just for updates, especially on a box that'll cost about 300 bucks when complete. Still better than a prebuilt WHS box advertised on NewEgg for 600 bucks.
I'm wondering about the easiest way to network two computers over a Router. I go to Network on the Places Drawer and see the other machine, though it's empty and shows nada.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the default setup (Gnome I think) and on my Gateway Notebook using a wireless connection. It appears to be working great and I can even see my Windows drives and network storage on my home office systems.I have also set it up to run my favorite Bible software on Windows running under VirtualBox. I then installed the KDE Desktop so that I can select either desktop when logging on.
However, once I am in the KDE desktop, I cannot connect to the internet. I have checked and double-checked and the wireless settings seem to be the same on both the Gnom and KDE Desktops but still no network or internet connection when using KDE. I might mention that I am using the 64 Bit version of Ubuntu.
On the 25th of January, one of my computers randomly stopped being able to connect to the Internet. It was running a dual boot (Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS & Windows XP SP2), and is connected to the network via an ethernet cable (no wireless). According to the Network Manager, everything is working okay (there was no change from when I was able to access the Internet).
When I would use Firefox, I would get the message "Waiting for (page)...". However, this is not a Firefox only problem, as every program requiring Internet access (e.g. Evolution) is unable to connect to the Internet.
I compared the Internet settings to those of my father's Windows XP SP1 computer, which is able to connect to the Internet. There was no difference, except for the IP Address and Hardware Address. Because of this, I incorrectly deduced that either the actual Ethernet cable or the wall plug was faulty. I tried using a different cable and connecting to the Ethernet wall plug used by the aforementioned computer. Nothing changed. I was still unable to connect.
I didn't worry about it until Tuesday, when my other computer had exactly the same problem. It is running a triple boot between Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP SP2, and I am unable to obtain Internet access using any partition. As with the previous case, my computer showed no change in the Internet settings, and the computer also shows it as being connected to the network. It is also connected via an Ethernet cable.
I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000, and I installed Ubuntu before and it worked flawlessly until I decided that I had to go back to Win7 because of certain program compatibility issues.I'm back here trying to set it up and am having no issues except for with my wireless. I can see all of the SSID's, I am able to connect to my wireless, and it displays that I have been assigned an IP and all of the other settings given by DHCP.
I have been trying to fix this for hours, googled, searched these forums, and have spent time with some people on the Ubuntu IRC channel and we are unable to come up with a fix.

The strange thing is that although nothing will load when I try to visit facebook.com, google.com, or any other website... I opened the update manager and I noticed that it would download for 30ish seconds, stop and do nothing for 60ish seconds, resume for another 30, stop, resume, etc. until it finished. I am able to ping my router, and 8.8.8.8, but I am unable to ping [URL].
I want to connect to a wireless open ad-hoc network to have internet access. It worked a while ago (1/2 year or something) but some update must have messed something up so it doesn't work any longer. Situation: There is a laptop that is running windows 7 and is connected to the internet via cabel. A open ad-hoc network is configuered with sharing of internet connection, status of the ad-hoc network is "waiting for users to connect". I want to connect with a second laptop that is running ubuntu 11.04. I can find the network and connect to it.
Problem: I cannot get any internet access while being connected to the ad-hoc network. So my questions are: how can i find out if what causes the Problem? I suspect a driver issue, but I'm not sure. required information from Howto post a wireless issue:

I cannot connect to the Internet by LAN. The light of the Internet card is off. On Windows, the system says the cable not plugged while I have plugged it. I solved this by change speed and duplex mode. However, on Ubuntu, the changing doesn't work
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe installation of Ubuntu 9.10 on my HP NC640 worked fine and the network adaptor was successfully recognised: I see the message 'Wired Network Connection 'Auto Eth0' active' and when I open Active Network Connections I see the IP addresses that have been assigned.
However, if I open Firefox, I cannot connect to the internet. I tried pinging some addresses (www.yahoo.com) and that seemed fine. I then tried to run a first system update and Ubuntu seemed to be able to retrieve some packages but not others.
I then tried opening 'Network Connections' and adjusted the MTU (to 1100) and changing the settings of IPv6 (various settings: eg. 'ignore') but none of that seemed to help. Here I wanted to switch off IPv6 but it looks like none of the settings did this. Is there maybe another place where I should be looking? Do I have to do this with the command line? (I hope not) Or can I switch off IPv6 in the system settings? And should MTU be automatic? Or should I set something there?
I am attempting to connect Ubuntu 9.10 to the Internet.I have a network connection, and Karmic detects it fine. I can ping addresses within our network (e.g. the Windows computer in the next room), and I can ping the router, but if I ping, say www.google.com, it says "Destination Net Unreachable". Previously, in Jaunty, I had a similar problem.I found a workaround: launch Pidgin. Somehow, launching Pidgin temporarily edits my configuration. However, in Karmic, I have no access to Pidgin, however, and Empathy does not do the same thing. Since I have no Internet, I cannot "sudo apt-get install" anything.How can I get the Internet working?

However unable to connect to the network or the internet when I load a copy of Ubuntu Karmic on dual boot. Windows networking and internet working fine. Is this an ethernet adaptor hardware issue? Broadcom NetXtreme 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet controller-PCI Express card Will try later connecting through a usb ethernet adaptor to see if this is really the problem.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit on my HP Touchsmart TX2 1020us which has a Broadcom 4322 chip. At first my computer didn't seem to see the card at all, but then I typed the command (sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source) and then restarted the computer and now I'm connected to the network, but cannot connect to the internet so how do I figure this out. Like I said I have very little experience with linux at all so please don't make your answers too complicated.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Xubuntu 10.04 on my desktop computer that had a USB wireless adapter DLink DWA-140. I didn't have to install any additional drivers to get it to work. I put in the network SSID and the password and was connected immediately. However, when I try starting firefox it doesn't load any sites. Can anyone help me in approaching this problem. I have a DLink DIR-655 router. If I should gather more information to get this problem solved then please let me know and I will do so.
Edit: Now I am unable to connect to the network. When I click the network icon in the taskbar, my home network is not visible while it is visible under another ubuntu computer I'm running.
