Aug 29, 2010I just installed open Suse 11.3, and I cannot SSH my school. Upon further investigation I could not even ping any machines outside my local area network. Ironically I could nmap machines outside my local area network.

Jan 6, 2010I have several Windoz machines in a peer-to-peer network and now two SUSE machines, one 11.1 and another 11.2.I have a network printer accessible now to all the machines.My next step is to be able to share files between all the machines and several network drives. I know how to set this up between the Windoz machines, but the only way I can get the SUSE machines to see the network (and be seen) is to shut down their firewalls, and I don't think that's how you are supposed to do it?Can someone point me to what it is that I need to read, or is there a FAQ somewhere to help get me started?
I think that this has something to do with Samba and I installed Samba (client or server? I forget) on the 11.1 and 11.2 seems to have it already built-in, but I don't know how to set it up with the firewalls on the two Linux machines so that it is all seamless (as if anything can be seamless).

Dec 10, 2010I only have one IP adress to access the server. But the server will host 3 web sites and I want them to be hosted in a vm. So, I want to setup 3 virtual machines to do it and use apache reverse proxy and vhosts to redirect the domain requested to the right vm. Now. I understand the concept, but I am not an expert to set that up....
I have an openSUSE 11.3 server. So, I have to set a virtual machine server, is that right? I have been told that I cannot do it with VMware server in oS 11.3. Can I use virtualbox for this? I only have to install virtual box? Is there a special version to install? Once the virtual machine server is install, is it trivial to create 3 vm? So, I want to know wich are the steps I have to take to set that up.
Ubuntu :: Sharing Files Between Two Machines On Network?
Nov 4, 2010I have a problem sharing files between two machines on my network, one, my main one running 10.10 and the other running Lubuntu. I've used the share files option on my main computer, and they show up on the Lubuntu machine, but when I try accessing the files, I get a message telling me that they'failed to mount'. It's frustrating in that I can see that the files are there, and obviously the Lubuntu machine can 'see' them too. I'm sure that I must have missed out something, and I've tried searching, but so far have only come accross some very old tutorials that just confuse me more. Surely there must be a fool proof way of getting this all working? (I've tried Giver, but the Lubuntu machine refuses to run Giver!)

Nov 6, 2010I've got a few parts laying around and maybe a 100 bucks on NewEgg I can get a Windows Server going. However, I have a few questions. I already have two Ubuntu servers going. My main concern is OS updates. I have Ubuntu based distros covered via apt-cacher-ng on one of my Ubuntu servers. I also have a nice squid server going with adzapper and so on. However, I have a bunch of Windows based machines on my network, and I have very limited bandwidth. I know I can run a virtual server on my main server, but I prefer to have an actual box just for a WSUS server for personal reasons. This is only an option if there is no option for WSUS style updating through Linux on my current server.
If I have to build a low powered Windows Server box in order to just push Windows updates for XP, Vista, and 7 to save bandwidth in the long run will a copy of Windows Home Server do the trick? I read an article from MaximumPC that WHS 2.0 will have a WSUS feature, but is this feature available in WHS 1.0? This is a really crappy way of storing updates and save bandwidth, but I don't know what other options I have. I live and work in a very remote area and I've already done everything I can think of to help save bandwidth. Like having a transparent proxy server and apt-cacher-ng running. It's also helps run things a lot faster when updating Ubuntu based boxes and surfing the internet. If I could just get the Windows updates out of the way I would be golden. I'll wait for WHS 2.0 if I have to. I'm not buying a full blown copy of Windows Server just for updates, especially on a box that'll cost about 300 bucks when complete. Still better than a prebuilt WHS box advertised on NewEgg for 600 bucks.

I tried restrting rwhod daemon on lambda, but no change. why lambda is playing this hide and seek with ruptime?

I have virtual machines that I do not want to have access to the host, I thought 'isolated network' did this but the VM's can ping the host. If (probably) I am wrong, how can I create an network that can not see anything else but what is also on the same network? The host and the isolated network are 192. and 172. The virtual bridge is not connected (or so it says) to any physical device.

Mar 27, 2010I used to have my print server with cups in openSUSE 11.1 and it used to work perfect. I was able to print from both linux machines and windows. But since I Installed openSUSE 11.2, I'm only able to print from linux machines. In windows XP I'am able to find the printer and install the drivers, and everything seems to work, but when I send the print command, it creates an error. I have three XP pcs that were running perfectly, and now neither one of them print, so I know is a problem with the server itself. I have all the samba and cups services activated, and the firewall is set correctly, but can't figure out why it is working with linux machines and not with windows.

Aug 29, 2011I have OpenSuse 11.3 with VirtualBox on it, and with installed Oracle DB (on host OS).. but, sometimes this computer is disconnected, without it's gateway (adsl router)... and in that case, I cannot ping from virtual OS to host OS, or another virtual OS. I tried to use 'Host only' option within VirtualBox, but it doesn't work. What should I do? It seems that virtual machines requires some kind of gateway/router, but since machine is disconnected, it's not working.. how could I fix it?

Jun 23, 2010So in an effort to increase the speed of my netbook, I removed Ubuntu and installed Lubuntu on it. When I tried to mount my samba share as I normally do, I noticed it wasn't able to connect - mount error(113): No route to host. Sensing something fishy, I attempted to ping the machine (both by name and by IP) - Destination Host Unreachable.The machine I'm trying to connect to is using Ubuntu 10.04 x64. I attempted to ping the other way and it was able to connect to the netbook just fine. When the netbook was using Ubuntu, it was connecting fine. My iptables check out ok, but here is the output of iptables -nvL:

Feb 13, 2011My two machines are both running Ubuntu 10.10. I want to transfer program files between them using a local area network.
My Ubuntu machines can both see the Window machines on the network, and get files from them. But my Ubuntu machines do not detect each other as being on the network. Nor can my Windows machines detect my Ubuntu machines.
From what I can tell, that's normal, and I've become resigned to using a pendrive to transfer files between the two machines. Or even sending files as email attachments.
there is a clean and easy way to transfer files between two Ubuntu machines on the same local area network.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Gathering Network Usage Of Xen / Virtual Machines?
Jun 23, 2009I've run into a problem gathering usage for my xen virtual systems. With my old model I used to gather all network usage via my cisco devices using the the counters for each port. Each system had it's own port on the switch, and I tracked network usage accordingly. Now that I'm using xen for virtual systems, and multiple vm's share the same switch port, i'm not exactly sure what my best option is for tracking usage.
I thought I may be able to setup vlans on the switch, and bind each vm to a different vlan using vconfig... but it seems like there has to be a better solution than that.

Nov 15, 2010I'm having issues setting up file sharing between two Linux machines. I've tried the forum cookie cutter answer of "right click folder, sharing options, share, allow others to write and edit, allow guest accounts", but I simply cannot get my two Ubuntu 10.10 machines to see each others shared files. I HAVE been able to download and use the program "Personal File Sharing", and with it I CAN share the "Shared" folder between both machines. I'd prefer to learn the correct way to link these two boxes up though, and be able to share more than 1 directory. Am I missing any programs to complete this link? Do I need to use Samba? I've tinkered with it, and I can get both computers to see a workgroup name I set up, but cannot get them to view each other in it.

The requirements are that the guest can log in on multiple computers at the same time and that the guest account's file are wiped out when they log off. The problem is that when guest is logged in on two different machines some programs (like firefox) will only run on one of them at a time. Is there anyway around this?
Also: I anticipate a settings nightmare. If guest is logged in on one machine and changes the desktop background then guest logs in on another machine will the background change in both places? What happens when the same file is written at the same time?
Debian :: Join Machines To Windows Domain AD?
Aug 22, 2010I have 15 or so debian lenny machines, and a xen server that I would like to join to the windows 2003 AD domain controller. The main goal is I would like the windows / linux user names and passwords to be the same on each system. Only 10 or so users need access to the machines but the passwords sometimes are different. How should I go about accomplishing this ?
I was told that openldap may be a solution. But from what I've read about it sounds like its just a mimic or window AD and doesnt sync with it, at least natively ?
Debian Installation :: Updating Three Machines With One Download?
Aug 21, 2011I have now got three machines with Debian on in my home. I use Mobile Broadband with a very modest monthly limit and remember somehow using Synaptic to gather either Updates or packages to download on one machine where there was another type of internet and could then move the packages back to my computer. Can anyone here remind me of what I would have done there or suggest a means of getting these three updated without blowing my limit. I'd either use a relative's broadband and my netbook, or do the Updates once at home and move the packages to the other two machines.
I'm using Debian 6.01, Gnome edition, 64 bit, on an Atom N450 netbook, a 3ghz dual core AMD pc and a a 2 ghz single core AMD pc, whatever of this is relevant. They have slightly different programs installed but are at the same stage of not being updated yet, with 252mb of them to add.

May 31, 2011I want to setup some virtual machines that will use the same architecture and debian-version as my host-machine. I have started to setup VMs with a netinstall-image and now want to add more software using apt-get. As most of the software I will use is already installed on my host-machine I wonder if there is any way to configure apt in such a way that it will not download packages from the internet, but will use the packages from my host-machine to save network-traffic. Is there a good may to populate VMs using the debs from the host-machine.

Jun 24, 2011Here is the setup I have. Two debain (squeeze machines) A1(eth0,192.168.33.1, netmask 255.255.255.0) and B1(eth0,192.168.43.1, netmask 255.255.255.0). They both have 3 nics'. So I am trying to connect to each other with a crossover cable and I have added the routes manually. eg: on machine A1 route added was
route add -net 192.168.43.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.33.2 eth1
and on machine B1
route add -net 192.168.33.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.43.2 eth1
For project purposes they both have to be on different networks, evn thouhg they are in same room.
