Slackware :: Configure Wifi Adapter In Slackware 12.0 / KDE Does Not Detect Any Wifi Device?
Jan 30, 2010i tried following the readme file included in the driver of the usb network adapter but seems its not exact.
any ideas on how i can configure it manually? KDE does not detect any wifi device. .(of course since no driver is installed yet).
i used my desktop (win***)with DSL connection and installed the driver of the usb net adapter.. made it as the access point. . so my laptop detects the desktop as wifi spot.
Slackware :: Take Current Windows7 (x64) Setup And Make It Into A Dual-boot Setup With Slackware 13.0?
Jan 24, 2010I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.
Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.
I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.
PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)

Sep 18, 2010I just installed ubuntu server 10.04. I want to connect to my wireless router(192.168.123.254). My router normally has wpa but I turned off encryption until I can get the server working. my router has MAC flitering which it has my servers MAC address and the dhcp server on my router is configured to assigned an ip address of 192.168.123.123 to my server.
On the server I do see wlan0 when I do sudo ifconfig -a. HOw do I setup the rest? I 'm very new with command line and linux so please bear with me.

Dec 21, 2008I just got a new desktop (the client) and hooked my "old" computer (the server) up to it with a crossover cable & NFS while I set up the new system.Unfortunately, while nfsd is running firefox cannot access the internet through ath0 -- the wifi card (NFS/rpc is on the ethernet card). Do I have to set up a proxy server (eg. squid) or is there a simpler solution?I don't need direct access to the net on the client. I just want to be able to use the wifi's IP in the server while it has a NFS client on eth0, so that firefox can work online.

May 28, 2010No, not Arnold S.I'm talking about the one from slackbuilds.org. It's not just another terminal emulator. It's got a cool feature of broadcasting the input to all (or selected windows). If it's a well known and used feature, than I'm sorry. I read about it a couple of days ago and soon it proved a big time-saver.
As all my systems are almost identical (selection of software, /home/ directory structure, program configuration, etc) I used terminator to set up my new shiny Slackware64 13.1 systems.The 'broadcast' function of terminator mirrors your input to other terminator windows (ssh sessions to other machines). That way I didn't have to configure it three times on three computers. I know that one can write a script to automate most of things, but sometimes there are interactive steps which would not work in a script.
It was especially useful in:
1. using sbopkg (3 simultaneous instances doing exactly the same thing on different systems )
2. general configuration
3. setting up bookmarks in emacs
4. Creating some scripts that aren't there by default (eg. /etc/rc.d/rc.local_shutdown)
I can imagine how useful it can be for administering a number of machines.
Debian Configuration :: Console Only Version Wifi Setup?
Jan 23, 2011I installed the base of Debian (only CD 1) without the desktop environment, so it is console only; also I am dual booting with Windows 7 x64 on this Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop... I have also successfully mounted my usb flash drive and CD drive; the one thing I am finding rather hectic is finding a way to connect to my wireless network with a "WPA2 Personal" Security and "TKIP/AES" Encryption with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card... I doubt that the drivers are actually installed, and Idk how to install them.Google searches on this yield confusing results, so I need help. So far, the most useful help I have found is the link posted here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo ... 29916.aspx but I have no idea on how to install that, if it is even what I need.

I have updated the firmware and I can see the AP. I have been using yast to configure the wlan device but one of the last steps it trys to perform is install smpppd. Even when hooked up via eth0 it can't find this program.

I can connect a laptop to my wifi access point, and connect to both the router box and the internet. I'm writing this message from it. If I access either hsbc Hong Kong internet banking or speedtest.net from my laptop I can't connect. Every other site I've tried is fine. What could be causing this? I don't know where to start. I've set up the firewall rules and routing tables, so I vaguely know what I'm doing... but clearly not enough to debug this issue.

Mar 30, 2010I have installed and un-installed 3 different versions of Ubuntu. My fourth is a re-install of v9.10. During all these installs I have had difficulty getting my wifi to work. During my last install I left the ISO in the drive by mistake so when the system rebooted it loaded from the disc in demo.... This was interesting because in the demo the program manager showed 2 drives for wireless, 1 Broadcom STA and 2 Broadcom b43xx. I tried loading the STA and it worked! (sorry it could have been the b43xx, for the time being it's insignificant) Upon my excitement I restarted the computer and removed the disk went to my Ubuntu set up and ...what the Broadcom choices weren't there Why?
Now I am running Win 7 Home 32bit on my main drive and have Ubuntu loaded on its own drive. I have a Netgear WN311b wireless N card installed. Again my confusion is why it worked in demo (off the cd) but doesn't from full install. I read on the web to try inserting my supplied disc from Netgear and then search program manager. It now showed the two for-mentioned Broadcom programs, but this time wouldn't install them. On the b43 I got an error message and on the STA it searched extracting and loading this continued for a 1/2 hour with no progression. I couldn't close the PM or the extracting and loading box, so I had to restart the computer.

Feb 24, 2010I've had 8.04 for almost a year & a half now, but the one thing that seems to confuse me after getting the rest of ubuntu is how to get wifi working. Before you say "read XXX FAQ, wiki, page", etc, I've read so many and despite understanding every normal thing about ubuntu, and all the customization I have, I haven't seen a single, up-to-date guide for making sense of wifi.
Here's what I know:
My wireless card is Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection (rev 05), supported in linux only by using a windows driver, ipw2200, which I do have running and installed somehow.

I also realized I needed ndiswrapper, so I installed that. Beyond this, I'll just admit it- I'm very confused. I have always had a working connection over ethernet cable plugged in, but I really need wireless lately, and found an old Netgear WGR614v7 G band wireless rounter in my basement, hooked it up, and have a wired connection from it right now.
So how do I set-up/get my wireless working with all this thus far? How do I set up the router's network through Ubuntu as well, so I can create a named network to connect to? I'm reading every guide I can, and am just coming up more confused.

Jun 10, 2010I got two issues with my wifi usb adapter:
1) it cannot see any networks around
2) i cannot setup it in master mode to use my PC as a router
As far as i can see, the device is recognized and the correct driver (rt73usb) is loaded. I was able to connect to a laptop somehow (the laptop could see other networks and the adapter's PC-to-PC network). I'd like to make it work as a router, i.e. share my internet connection (eth0) via wlan0. Here is what i have:

Dec 24, 2010If I understand correctly Ubuntu does not allow a wifi connection until a user loges in. That makes it so that prey (see preyproject.com) cannot send notices until someone has logged onto Ubuntu.what I would like to do (but I have no clue how) is to set up a user account that automatically, in the background, logs on at start up. Then this little user login would establish any Internet connection that is possible (wifi or lan) and start the program 'prey'. This should all be totally transparent to the user that would just see the regular log in screen.

Apr 24, 2011I've recently acquired an old HP Pavilion ZT3000 and have decided to install Slackware, but I'm having trouble with the whole rc.inet1 configuration stuff. I've been able to connect to the internet manually with the following command:

(...and then use "dhcpcd" to get an ip address.)
As you can see, eth0 is my wireless interface. Not exactly sure why (the comp has a IR port,wifi and Ethernet.) I'm using a shared WEP key (I know the security implications of WEP). The key being shared is the reason restricted is a parameter in the iwconfig command. I've been trying to get it working through /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 but I can't seem to setup rc.inet1.config correctly I'm not sure where to set the key to "shared"
I've searched the forums and I could use the working iwconfig command with ./bash_profile as a startup script. This has the problem I need sudo (ie setup /etc/sudoer), which seems like a lot of work, when rc.inet should work. And it also has the problem of having to enter my password THREE times (login, sudo iwconfig and for sudo dhcpcd) which is horrible (and I don't even know how it would work when I set X to begin on startup again). I probably could also install "wicd" but having to ferry across files and trying to setup things without the internet is a pain.

Feb 26, 2011I turned my wifi switch off because I was on a plane, and wanted to save battery, but now Slackware isn't recognizing that it's being turned back on. I toggle the switch in XP, and the light goes from orange to blue, like normal, but no matter what I do in Slackware, the light stays orange. Wicd just tells me there are now wireless networks in range. My wireless card doesn't show up in ifconfig, but lspci shows it fine

It is working by using wicd and I am wireless at the moment. What security should I put in place (wicd says unsecured). then tell it to connect sometimes posting on forums requires me to copy my text hit submit hope the connection is still up maybe restart wicd reconnect.is there a bug in wicd or python ?

Jan 5, 2010I have a system using a Linksys WUSB54B usb wifi adapter that needs the rt2x00/rt2500 modules. Using the fresh install kernel, 2.6.29.6-smp, the modules are there and I get my interface up.
But, when I configure my own kernel, not an smp system, I cannot find the .config option in the menu for rt2x00 network adapter support and the modules are not in /lib/modules/vmlinuz-2.6.29.6-first directory tree after a "make modules_install".
I looked through the configuration menu, but could find no reference to the rt2x00 drivers.
Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Setup - Cannot Install The Driver And The "Ralink Wireless LAN"
Dec 29, 2010I am dual booting with windows xp on a dell computer I recently acquired. I am running Ubuntu 10.10. The computer didn't have a wireless connection so I installed a wireless pci adapter from a company called ZONET. I installed it perfectly on windows xp, however, I cannot install the driver and the "Ralink Wireless LAN" on Ubuntu. I inserted the cd, and opened the setup.exe file with Wine Windows Program Loader (I have installed Wine 1.3 by following the instructions on http://www.winehq.org/download/deb and clicking on the link that says "click here".
I am currently temporarily connected to the internet by borrowing my main computers ethernet cable). I followed the instructions on the InstallShield Wizard only to have two windows pop up saying there is an error (see attached image).
Networking :: Wireless Setup In Slackware 13.1 64 Bit
Sep 16, 2010I have tried to get my wireless network setup for 5 nights now, with the same results. Everything in my system automatically installs during the initial installation, except wireless, which I have run into in the past with older pc's. This install however (from 13.1 install dvd) seems to not cooperate properly with the rest of my computer. After installing wicd, I attempt to connect to the wireless network. Immediately after, wicd shows in the activity bar 'flushing dns' and syslog spews out two notifications at the lower right. That's it. From there it hangs and will not terminate cleanly. If I log out from there, I cannot get back into my x window system. Startx merely creates an Auth file and fails to load, saying that it's already active on 0. Then, if I run shutdown -r now, the system only goes as far as disconnecting remote drives and then hangs as well. I have to perform a hard boot at that point. The only thing that circumvents this, is to installpkg remove wicd. After wicd's removal, then I can shutdown -r now and reboot, reenter X and everything acts normal - until a wicd install. Any thoughts, suggestions, anything?
Please be aware, that I am not familiar with outputting data into a file like in the other posts I've seen here, so if you need the output, please include the commands necessary.
